 Feijen Nudges into Pole Position
TWO-TIME PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup winner Niels Feijen (Holland) has assumed the top spot in the 2011 European Mosconi Cup Rankings following his recent semi-final finish at the Euro Tour’s Italian Open at Treviso. Looking to make his seventh appearance in the event this December in Las Vegas, Feijen was previously third in the ranking.
Italian Open Champion, Ralf Souquet, continued his outstanding run of form and he now moves from fifth into second spot with Darren Appleton, the 2010 Mosconi MVP, and previous No.1 Nick Van den Berg sharing third place.
At the conclusion of the 12 event programme, the top three players in the ranking will automatically qualify for the European side for the 18th annual PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup, which takes place at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas from 8-11 December.

Ralf Souquet (GER) has won the Dynamic Italian Open 2011 Euro-Tour tournament in Treviso, Italy. He overcame Jayson Shaw (SCO) with 9:7 in the final. After Paris in February, this is already the second Euro-Tour stop that Souquet puts in his account. He seems to be unstoppable this year.
Like the semi-final before, the final match seemed to be very single-sided in “The Kaiser’s” favour. He took a quick 5:0 lead and benefitted from unforced errors that Shaw has played. But then suddenly Shaw started to shift into overdrive. He snatched rack after rack, playing without any mistakes. Souquet had a hard time with his break and Shaw used his opportunities to even the match at 6:6. The arena which was packed with people turned silent. One could physically feel the tension. Everybody was curious whether Shaw could do the same to Souquet as he done to Melling in the match before. But there was still one man who had something against that: “The Kaiser” himself! At 6:6, Shaw played a bad safety shot and gave Souquet the chance to take a 7:6 lead. Then Shaw broke the balls. He had two balls down and a promising looking layout on the table when he missed the 2-ball. Souquet accepted the gift and ran out the next two racks and rightfully took the title of the Dynamic Italian Open 2011.

2011 Philippine Open Pool Champion, Thorsten Homann - Germany. Photography © Raya Sport - used here by Pro9 with express permission. Hohmann, Chen Win Philippine Open
Thorsten Hohmann has won the Philippine Open Men's Division and Siming Chen has won the Women's. Chen won in dominating style, never giving Kelly Fisher a breath of air as her offensive style left few opportunities for challenge. The 17-year old Chinese native defeated Fisher 9-3 and is yet the latest superstar female to emerge from the emerging giant that is Chinese pool.
Thorsten Hohmann had a bit more of a battle on his hands in his victory. He and Ralf Souquet went rack for rack with never more than a single point between them until Souquet gained his first lead of the match at 10-9 in the race to 11. From there Hohmann won the next two racks to claim the title. When Hohmann won the rack to get him to double-hill it was his third hill-hill match in the last four. He had also won against Carlo Biado and Ricky Yang by the same margin.
It was rather ironic that Hohmann would win this event. He was not even supposed to be there. He had had a personal commitment that was preventing him from attending and that commitment did not go away until the last minute. Neither the BCA, the EPBF, the WPA nor the promoter could find a slot for him at that late hour. But a player pulled out of the tournament at the last moment and Yen Makabenta gave Thorsten a call just on the off chance that he might be able to get to Manila and compete. Within a few hours of the call Hohmann was on his way to Manila and the incredible week of pool that lay ahead for him.

6-11 April 2011
Antonio Lining - Philippines Photography © Frederico Makabenta - used by Pro9 with express permission. Day Four: Final Four Cast Complete: Souquet, Liu, Hohmann, Lining
It’s now down to the final four. The new champion in the Philippine Open Pool Championships will be known today, Monday, April 11, at the SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City. As early as Sunday afternoon, Ricky Yang of Indonesia, the defending champion, bowed out of the tournament after suffering his second setback. He lost to up-and-coming Filipino player Carlo Biado, 1-9, as early as the round-of-16. The 27-year old Biado continued to push his luck as far as he could and he did that with a stunning 9-7 win over his compatriot, newly-crowned World 8-Ball champion Dennis Orcullo.
His luck ended in a do-or-die battle against former world champion Thorsten Hohmann of Germany, who won in a thrilling 9-8 encounter. The German player, who is seeking his first championship on Philippine soil, joined his bosom buddy and countryman Ralf Souquet and Liu Haitao of China, two players who barged into the Final Four unscathed going to the final day.
The last berth for the semifinals was disputed by veteran Filipino Antonio Lining and Darren Appleton of Great Britain. Lining prevailed in the tightly contested match, 9-6. “It’s nice to be in the semifinals. It’s always fun for me competing in the Philippines and until now, I have yet to win a title here,” said Hohmann. “I made several mistakes, including the missed shot at the No. 10 ball, which could have given me a chance to finish off the match earlier. But he made mistakes, too, and we had an interesting finish by making several safety exchanges.” Lining is the last Filipino standing.
His win over Appleton, a former World Ten Ball champion, was aided by luck coupled with the Briton’s erratic game, which came at a perfect time. “Luck played a big part in my victory, as well as the bad game he played,” said Lining. The four players take center stage on Monday beginning at 12 noon with Lining taking on Souquet and Liu going up against Hohmann.
