 Take Your Pick!
With the 2009 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup a little over a week away, Matchroom Sport can announce the format and schedule for the four days of the event.
There are a total of 21 matches in place to determine the destination of the famous solid silver trophy and this year there are a few changes in order to allow more players to play more matches. Successful partnerships in the doubles will be one-offs as no pairing can appear more than once.
The onus is firmly on the two captains – Alex Lely and Nick Varner – to employ all their experience and plot a strategy that will win their side the Mosconi Cup.
In a complete departure from previous years, Singles Matches 5 & 7 will see the captains decide who plays for the opposition rather than their own teams!
Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn; “In previous years, the captains understandably stuck with the winning partnerships, but for 2009 there will be no place to hide and all ten players will feel the full heat of battle.

BANGING BALLS WHILE SEARCHING FOR THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE
(Manila, Philippines)--When I walked into the One Side billiard hall in the Malate section of Manila on Tuesday night, I pretty much knew what to expect; a few hours of watching the best pool players in the world play money games in the finest “action” on earth. For sure what I most certainly didn’t expect was to come face to face with the most cutting edge science on the planet.
But as it turned out, both the best pool and science even Albert Einstein would envy were happening right in front of my eyes.
Now, you’re probably assuming that I’m about to tell you about some mysterious old time hustler from the dirty and overcrowded back streets of Manila imparting long held secrets and philosophies never heard before beyond the teeming barrios of this sultry pool loving archipelago. Well, I’ve had nights like that before in Manila, but they usually involved the great Efren Reyes. And while Efren is surely a genius on the green felt pitch, he wouldn’t know a science experiment if you made him shoot with a test tube filled with bubbling h2o.

 2009 World Ten Ball Championship
This was the first day that any players could be eliminated from competition by going two and out. Perhaps the biggest surprise was the early exit by American player Shane Van Boening. Van Boeing lost today to young Russian superstar Konstantin Stepanov 9-6. Martin Kempter of Austria also left the room today after dropping his match on the hill to Tey Choon Kat of Singapore. Another disappointment to the crowd came when local hero Demosthenes Pulpul faced off against Ronnie Alcano in a match that had to eliminate one Filipino. That would be Pulpul as Alcano prevailed 9-5.
There were smiling faces on the other end of the charts as many players have now won two matches and thus qualified for the final round of 64. Names here include Dennis Orcullo (PHI), Kuo Po-Cheng (TPE), defending champion Darren Appleton (GBR), Niles Feijen (NED), Ernesto Dominguez (USA), Lee Van Corteza (PHI), Alain Martel (CAN), Thorsten Hohmann (GER), and the British duo of Karl Boyes and Imran Majid.

Deeper, better WTBC gets underway
MANILA, PHILIPPINES---Defending champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain believes a win in the World Ten Ball Championship (WTBC) will be sweeter the second time around.
“I’m not saying that last year’s not great. I just think that the competition this year will be up by another level,” he said.
World’s top ranked player Ralf Souquet of Germany goes to the extreme.
“This could be the best ever field in world championship history,” said Souquet, who is gunning for the pool’s version of Triple Crown. He is the 1996 world champion in 9-ball and the reigning world champ in 8-ball.
Souquet and Appleton are the top two seeds in the WTBC, which unfolds with the group stages on Wednesday at the World Trade Center in Manila. Souquet will face Thomasz Kaplan of Poland in Group A while Appleton will play Tey Choon Kiat of Singapore in Group B in the first round.

 | IS 10 BALL THE PERFECT GAME? |
2009 World Ten Ball Championship World Trade Center Philippine National Bank Complex Manila Bay Area Metro Manila Philippines www.tedlerner.com
25-30 November 2009
IS 10 BALL THE PERFECT GAME?
The discipline of 10-ball was formally adopted into the World Pool Association(WPA) system in December, 2007. Now, only two years on, few people would doubt that the game has not only been a success, but is here to stay.
From Europe to the USA to Asia, 10 ball tournaments have become as ubiquitous as 9 ball tournaments. World renowned cue manufacturer Predator has given its backing to a big international 10 ball tour. A World 10 ball championship for women was held for the first time ever this year. And now, of course, an absolute powerhouse, world class field has assembled in Manila for the second World Ten Ball Championship.
The worldwide recession forced the World 8 ball and 9 ball championships off the calendar this year, and the World 10 ball championship has taken center stage as the biggest and most important world pool championship in 2009 for men.

WPA World Team Championship & BILLIARD EXHIBITION 2010 Hannover Exhibition Center Hannover Fair Ground Hall 13 Hannover Germany www.milliken.com www.wpa-pool.com www.wtc-2010.com
30 January - 7 February 2010
www.milliken.com World Team Championship in Hannover
Billiard cloth manufacturer Milliken has been chosen as the official cloth supplier for the first World Team Championships in Hanover in the New Year organised by Basevents Europe and Fachausstellungen Heckmann GmbH.
Two hundred pool players representing 50 teams from across the globe will compete on 32 tables for $400,000 in prize money, with the Hanover exhibition centre anticipating 4,000 spectators daily.
Interest in American pool is at an all-time high in Germany, according to Fachausstellungen spokesman Lars Pennigsdorf. “There are 4.5 million people playing regularly in Germany alone and, across Europe, this rises to around 50 million.”
For Milliken, the World Team Championships are regarded as a key event to demonstrate its highly-rated pool brand SuperPro, which is distributed in Germany by Busch Billards & Sports.
