 | Pro9 interviews BWPPA Chairperson Matthew Gleaves |
Matthew Gleaves Chairperson BWPPA The British Wheelchair Pool Players Association www.bwppa.org
Tuesday 10 November 2009
Matthew Gleaves shooting at the first BWPPA event in 2009. The Lester interview - Matthew Gleaves talks to Pro9
Born in 1969, Matthew Gleaves has been playing cue sports of one type or another for well over twenty years. In that time he has managed to combine a full-time career as a civil servant with an equal devotion to promoting the British Wheelchair Pool Players Association, as well as being a capable and fierce competitor himself.
Gleaves, now in his 40's, still has ambitions to win Gold at the European 9 Ball Championships and he can regularly be found relentlessly practicing pool at his favourite local club in Darlington to further that ambition.
Here he talks with Pro9's latest guest reporter Matthew Lester about the BWPPA, it's first year with the new three tournament format, and his plans for the future of the wheelchair game in the UK.

 | Your chance to bid on a piece of European pool history! |
CUE AUCTION TO AID THE PARKINSONS DISEASE CHARITY Tommy Donlon's famous cue! Meucci SE XI Number 33 of Limited Edition This cue is NOT new, but it has WON countless tournaments! www.meuccicues.com www.parkinsons.org.uk Please place your genuine bids here in our forums - thanks for playing!
Sunday 8 November 2009
Tommy Donlon's Meucci SEXI - a very sexy cue! Bids are invited for this much admired cue!
The Meucci Special Edition 11 was one of Meucci's finest creations, it instantly became a classic cue and the limited production run of 500 cues completely sold out very quickly. Stunning design, awesome playing characteristics, and the amusingly provocative "SEXI" designation all added to the cache of this very valuable model.
Desired not just for it's excellent playing characteristics (Meucci cues were renowned as the best playing cues in the world at the time) but it's beautiful mother of pearl inlays were part of the Meucci trademark look which totally revolutionised pool cue aethetics of the period, features that we still see to this day.
So admired is this model that although originally priced at $800 they have actually increased in value and currently even specimens in 90% condition still change hands for $900 or more on the rare occasion they become available on the collectors market, and although this cue features a replacement Meucci "red dot" shaft - it's history will surely mean more than that to the lucky auction winner.
The design features an ivorine collar and ivory effect forearm, spliced 4 point cue with razor sharp point tips with three veneers of double black and green, birdseye maple inlayed with windows of deeply reflective mother of pearl and a central sunburst design in blue.
The butt design mirrors the forearm with a discreet black box outline encapsulating the same unusually pleasing pairing of golden coloured birdseye maple with blue oval keyline inlays and yet more mother of pearl.
Despite it's age, this cue is still straight, and although it does naturally show signs of fifteen years of careful use, it still wins tournaments, and it's looking for a caring owner who will hopefully treasure it for the unique history attached to it. The stories it could tell, the victories it has achieved, the countries it has visited, the players it has beaten, the record number of Pro Tour titles it has acheived, the trophies it has garnered. Maybe the collector of this cue will have it refurbished at some time, perhaps with a sympathetic golden Pit Viper snake skin wrap - it's actually more affordable to do this than you think, and the cue would look like new afterwards - and yes... That is what I would do!

The WPA Juniors final awards ceremony in Managua, Nicaragua. Two New World Champions!
Ruslan Chinakhov of Russia and Keng-Chun Lin of Taipei are the new WPA World Junior Champions. The final day of play began with Anja Wagner (GER) defeating Konishi Samia (JPN) 9-7. Then Keng-Chun Lin ended the winning streak of Liz Lovely (USA) by that same 9-7 margin.
This set up the semi-final match between Liz Lovely and Anja Wagner as Keng-Chun Lin waited for the victor to play the championship round. That would be Anja Wagner as she found momentum first and carried her margin to ever-larger numbers that resulted in her winning out 9-5. However, the power that Wagner displayed would not be enough to overcome the skills of Lin. Keng-Chun Lin defeated Ms. Wagner 9-6 to stand atop the podium and receive the gold. Watch out, Ga-Young, Jasmin and Allison. Those footsteps you hear are sure and confident.
This brought the young men out for their final contests. First up were the two undefeated players, Nolle Stefan (GER) and Ruslan Chunakhov (RUS). Chinakhov found his true form and demolished the young German 11-1. The two players who had already suffered one loss were up next and had a much closer battle as Phil Burford (GBR) narrowly bested Kuei-Min Lin (TPE) 11-9.

Bob Yalen, Director of Sport & Entertainment, Mohegan Sun, congratulating Mika. IMMONEN WINS WINNER-TAKE-ALL $25,000 EVENT
“This is the toughest tournament in the world,” said an elated Mika Immonen moments after capturing the 2009 International Challenge of Champions title. The pressure packed $25,000 winner-take-all event was held at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, October 27. Immonen, originally from Finland, defeated Darren Appleton of England in the final match, and was crowned the new “Champion of Champions.” The two semifinals and the Championship match were taped by ESPN for telecast beginning December 20.
“We may look cool out there, but the pressure is just incredible,” said Immonen “There’s no margin for error when every player is a champion. One shot missed and you can lose $25,000! Your nerves are off the chart during the entire tournament.” His comment was all the more revealing because he was fresh off having won the U.S. Open two years in a row.

 J. Pechauer’s Crown Jewel Shaft Inlays Adorn Newest Predator Special Editions
World-renowned Predator Cues and famed custom cue maker J. Pechauer join forces to release the Imperial 22 & 23 Predator Special Editions, the first cues co-developed with Pechauer to feature his signature Crown Jewel shaft inlay technique.
Previously seen only on Pechauer’s line of cues, the distinctive Crown Jewel shaft inlays on Predator’s Imperial 22 & 23 Special Editions give players the utmost in beauty with the proven technology of Predator’s high-performance 3142 shaft. Pechauer’s proprietary inlay technique incorporates designs from the cue to the lower portion of the shaft nearest the joint. Application of the design stays at the very surface of the wood to work in perfect harmony with the 10-piece splicing in Predator’s shafts.
“It’s been amazing to collaborate with Predator on such a fulfilling body of work,” says J. Pechauer, “and I can only hope players enjoy competing with the cues as much as we have enjoyed creating them.”

Blend of Youth and Experience Attempting To Regain Cup
MATCHROOM SPORT can announce three more players to join Johnny Archer on Team USA as they attempt to win the Mosconi Cup outright for the first time since 2005. As expected, the Nos. 1 and 2 ranked players on the BCA Points List at the conclusion of last week’s US Open take their place and they are Los Angeles’ Oscar Dominguez and Corey Deuel from Columbus, Ohio.
They will be joined by the third highest ranked American player, Shane Van Boening, who will be making his third appearance in the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup which takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas from 10th to 13th December.
Dominguez, a 24 year-old from Van Nuys, caps a great year that saw him win the Turning Stone Classic XIII in August and complete a high finish at the Pro Players Championship.
Son of Californian pool legend Ernesto, Dominguez is thrilled to be pulling on a Team USA shirt.
“I am honored to be representing my country. For me to earn my spot through points is amazing and it was actually my goal at the beginning of 2009, so I’m very happy to have accomplished it,” said Dominguez.
“It is people like Ralf, Niels, and Mika whom I learned so much from and now I get to play against them in the biggest, most prestigious event in the world.
“This opportunity makes it all very special to me. I am looking forward to the challenge and playing with America's finest, instead of against. Having played competitive basketball all my life, I know how to work as a team and I think this experience will help me. I feel Team USA has the ability to win and I will be training hard from now on for this event.
