England Make Meal of Malaysia
Reigning World 10 Ball Champ, Darren Appleton and partner Imran Majid, made it through to the last 16 of the PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool as they made hard work of beating Malaysia after a blistering start.
The English pair stormed into a 5-0 lead as they raced through the racks and Majid had an easy 9 ball to make it 6-0 but missed it to give the Malaysian team of Ibrahim Bin Amir and Lee Poh Soon a glimmer of hope.
Another miss by Majid, this time on the 5 ball, gave the Malaysians another chance which they took and things looked even better for them as they ran out the next from the break to make it 5-3.
England relieved the pressure by winning the next but it was an Appleton miss that gave a chance to the Malaysians and they made it 4-6 but it was to be their last meaningful contribution to the match.

Defending Champs USA Given Scare - Plucky Malta Falter at Final Hurdle
TEAM USA, who 12 months ago held the World Cup of Pool aloft in Rotterdam, Holland, edged their way into the last 16 of this year’s tournament following a heart-stopping victory over Malta at the SM Mall North Annex in Manila.
These two nations met at the 2007 World Cup and just like then, the Americans squeezed through by a single rack as the Maltese pairing of Tony Drago and Alex Borg fought them every step of the way and even found themselves breaking for the match.
Instead it was Rodney Morris and Shane Van Boening who clinched victory as Borg’s dry break allowed them to run out for the win.
There was nothing to separate them at 4-4 as the experienced pool player Drago coached his less seasoned team mate through some trickier moments. A break and run in the next followed by a fluked carom on the 9 saw the USA move into a 6-4 lead and when a missed bank shot in the next by Drago left the table on for the Americans, they moved comfortably to the hill.

Metropolitan Billiard Organisation arrive on the scene with a bang
The MBO has arrived, and will be holding their inaugural 9 Ball tournament on Saturday 12 September at the popular Croydon Rileys club in Frith Road. In fact, the schedule of events indicates an 8 Ball event on the follwing day at the same venue, and so Londoner's can now look forward to plenty of American Pool action for the capital in the coming months, courtesy of the MBO.

TOUR EVENT 2 - REARDON'S SOUTHSIDE
Polish visitor Piotr Ostrowski won the second stop on the SAPPA Black Bottle Scottish 9-Ball Tour at Reardon's Southside in Glasgow with a comprehensive 10-6 victory over Larkhall-based Scott Gillespie. Ostrowski, who previous played on the SAPPA Tour when he lived in Scotland a couple of years ago, went through the whole weekend undefeated taking some impressive scalps on his way to the title.

2009 PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool - USA Open Defence v Malta
THE AMERICAN pairing of Shane Van Boening and Rodney Morris face a tough opening match as they look to defend their PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool trophy.
This year's tournament, which features 32 two-man teams from 31 nations, will take place in Manila, Philippines from Tuesday, September 1 to Sunday, September 6.
USA won the 2008 competition and will meet Malta, whose team includes Mosconi Cup rival Tony Drago, in a mouth-watering first round tie.
These two met in the opening round of the 2007 event and it was the American side of Morris and Corey Deuel who prevailed 8-7 in an absolute classic.
Finland’s Mika Immonen and Markus Juva, runners-up in 2007, have a tricky tie against a Swedish side that includes Marcus Chamat, winner of last weekend's Austrian Open.
England reached the final last year and will be represented by Imran Majid and World Pool Masters Champion Darren Appleton and they will be confident of triumphing against Malaysia.

Europe's iron grip on straight pool this millennium doesn't seem easy to shake even this year with 2007 World 14.1 Champion Oliver Ortmann, 2006 World 14.1 Champion Thorsten Hohmann, and World #1 Mika Immonen all aiming for the crown. The Dragon Promotions revived event is in its 4th consecutive year alive with help of industry giants such as Predator, Ozone Billiards, Brunswick Billiards, Simonis Cloth, Master Chalk, Aramith Balls, Accu-Stats and the Laser Rack. Comet Billiards will host this year's event which will start play on August 24, 2009 and end August 29. The greatest straight pool players from around the world will arrive on USA's east coast again to New Jersey, and attend this prestigious event to play for the coveted title of World Straight Pool Champion.
If there is one country that can be said is the dominant force in 14.1, that distinction would go to Germany.
The #1 seed of the event is no doubt Germany's Thorsten Hohmann. Hohmann's name has been almost synonymous with straight pool these past few years. "The Hitman" has won the European 14.1 Championship, the 2008 Lucasi Classic 14.1, annihilated the field of 14.1 champions in last years Accu-Stats 14.1 Invitational, and of course became the first non-American to win the World 14.1 title in history. Hohmann also holds the world record for biggest run of 176 during a World Championship.

A cue collecting article concerning a magnificent cue!
Well, I have owned some cues in my time...
...But then something comes along that is truly huge. This thing is absolutely massive in terms of its place in billiard history.
A bit of background about the maker first. Pete Tascarella was a police officer in the same neighbourhood as a certain George Balabushka (you may have heard of him) in New York. Quite often when Pete was on the beat, he used to call in on George and share stories over a coffee. The two became good friends. Pete witnessed first hand the great man working his magic on that famous lathe named Brutus. When George passed away, Pete considered his options and always fancied having a go at making cues so he ended up buying all of George’s equipment and wood stock from George’s wife. Over the years Pete became a Master Cue Builder and players and collectors alike respect his work for the playability and construction. In my opinion, Pete Tascarella is top 5 in the world today. Uncompromising quality with that old school look, feel and construction is something which I love and the type of cues I collect display that.
