The 14th Open Groningen 9-Ball Championships 2009

There aren't too many European tournaments that can boast such a high pedigree of former winners, as they include Rico Diks, Michael Schmidt, Niels Feijen, Alex Lely, Brian Beekers, Nick van den Berg, and last year, Christian Reimering.

This event has a brilliant longevity too as the Groningen Open is now in it's amazing 14th year, and this year it will be completed in a single day on 19 Brunswick Gold Crown tables with Simonis Cloth.

The POOLPOK’ World Series!

Professional pocket billiards player Vincent Facquet is pleased to announce the inception of a dynamic and innovative blend of pool and poker tournaments - PoolPok. Combining the intensity of Texas Hold ‘Em with the thrill of 8-ball tournaments, PoolPok’s ground-breaking new format will have twice the excitement and feature a million-euro prize fund.

Stage 1 of PoolPok will consist of an online Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament with an unlimited amount of participants. Only 1 percent of the players from each tournament will qualify for the next stage of PoolPok. Once 128 players qualify, the second stage begins. This will comprise a single-elimination 8-ball tournament with a field of 128. Last place pays 4,000 euros to a man and 5,000 euros to a woman, while first place pays 150,000 euros. The top 8 finishers in the first tournament will automatically be invited to return to the second.

The GB9 Paul Medati Trophy

GB9 is Britain’s official professional 9 ball pool tour. The tour has quickly cemented itself as the toughest and most respected national pool tour in Europe with a line up of players other nations can only envy, such as the 2007 World Pool Champion - Daryl Peach; European Number 1 - Mark Gray, 2008 World 10 Ball Champion - Darren Appleton, London's finest - Imran Majid and Raj Hundal, and snooker legend Tony Drago to name but a few.

This was to be a very special GB9 event - renamed in commemoration of one of our own, Paul Medati, a well known and much liked face on the pro snooker circuit, he was swiftly taken from us by cancer last year, and during the weekend tour players raised £372 for MacMillan Cancer Support in recognition of the enormous difference they made to the quality of Paul's life and the support to the family during his final days.

Appropriately this tournament was hosted in one of our favourite and best equipped clubs, the third event of the season would also be crucial to players hoping to improve their ranking and possibly gain promotion to the elite player ranks for next season as these GB9 Tournaments have a three-tiered offering. An elite 32 player "Pro Cup", a 96 player "Challenge Cup", and a main event, "The Paul Medati Trophy" which pits all 128 players against each other, with a total prize fund exceeding £11,000.

These auspicious aspirations appear well justified as two new champions were crowned and a new record was achieved, along with some great gestures of sportsmanship.

Nine European Players In the Hunt

Europe, holder of the three WPA world championships, is in the thick of the battle for top honors in the Philippine Open, despite the surprise setback suffered by world No. 1 Ralf Souquet.

Still undefeated after two rounds of play are World 10-ball Champion Darren Appleton of the UK, Kelly Fisher of Ireland, Radislaw Babica of Poland, and Marcus Chamat of Sweden.

Darren Appleton beat Japanese Hayato Hijikata 9-6 in a live TV table match.

Marcus Chamat affirmed his top 10 world rating in beating Taiwanese Ko Po-Cheng, 9-5.

Babica continued to catch people's attention in hurdling Austrian Martin Kempter in a tight match, 9-7.

Fisher entered the third round Wednesday night when she beat Filipino Victor Arpilleda 9-7.

On the losers bracket, Germans Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann, Italian Fabio Petroni, Russian Ruslan Chinakov, and Austrian Martin Kempter remain in contention.

Europe’s biggest loss in Thursday’s action was Jasmin Ouschan of Austria who lost to Ernesto Dominguez of Mexico in a hill-hill thriller. The pretty Austrian missed a fairly easy shot at the 10-ball in the final rack.

It's all systems go for the first-ever Philippine Open Pool Championship which kicked off at SM Megamall, Megatrade Hall 2, on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, and the best of the best in the world will compete for top prizes and highly coveted places in the world rankings of the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA).

A total of $84,000 in total prize money and spots in the prestigious World Ten Ball Championship will be up for grabs in the tournament, which is the first event in the 2009 WPA World Ranking Tour.

Sixty-four of the finest players in the world, including the reigning World 10-ball champion and the world’s No.1 player, will see action in the competition which is being organized by Raya Sports in cooperation with the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines and Star Billiards, and sanctioned by the WPA.

Leading the foreign bets are Ralf Souquet of Germany and Darren Appleton of Great Britain. Souquet is currently ranked No. 1 by the WPA and is the reigning world 8-ball champion. Appleton, on the other hand, is the defending world 10-Ball titlist. He captured the crown last year in the event’s inaugural staging in Manila. Europe's Largest Wheelchair Tour

The Wheelchair Tour accepts new players throughout the season on an adhoc basis - and you'll be matched against players of similar ability, so even if you know a wheelchair pool player who might like a fun pool weekend, get them to contact the tour now.

Each tour weekend features three events. The Pro Cup event - exclusively for the elite players, a Challenge Cup - for all the other players, and finally a Main Event which throws both divisions together. This two tiered approach gives players of all ability a really enjoyable weekend with a real chance of winning it big!

So there you have it... You don't have to be a World Class player, and there's no obligation to join the entire tour, but if you've been thinking about it but deferred before, you don't know what you're missing. Give it a go... I went to the last one and had a cracking time!
