PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool 2012 Robinson’s Place Mall Ermita Manila Philippines www.robinsonsmalls.com www.partypoker.net www.matchroompool.com - World Cup of Pool - facebook - brackets - livestream

UNHERALDED POLISH pair Karol Skowerski & Wojciech Szewczyk crashed the quarter-finals of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as they outlasted a pedigree Dutch side of Nick Van den Berg and Huidji See, winning 8-6 at Robinson’s Place in Manila.
Pool has been on the rise in Poland over the past five years or so and in addition to these two there are plenty of other top drawer shooters waiting in the wings.
It was all quality in the opening half of the match as the Poles opened up a surprise 3-1 lead including a tidy break and run. The Polish squad was set to go ahead 4-1, having outfoxed the Dutch on a push out and safety battle but with just three balls left on the table Szewczyk missed an easy 6 ball handing a gift to Holland who made it 3-2.

Team Holland - Nick van den Berg & Huidji See. Both teams played well and at 5-5, the match was anyone’s. A poor positional shot from the Poles let the Dutch in and they took the lead and looked favourites. Poland took the next though as See missed a 6 ball and the match was looking increasingly scrappy.
In the end, it was a limp to the finish line and it was Poland who got their first as the Dutch looked all at sea.
Commented Polish Team Manager Grzegorz Kędzierski, “This is our fourth time in the quarter-finals so we hope we can get our first medal. The team played bad today, not like they can. They started good but both teams didn’t play that well.
“The boys are looking forward to tomorrow. There will be a lot of people in the arena, it will be a big occasion and let’s hope they can do it for Poland!”
Team Poland's Karol Skowerski. The 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool runs from Tuesday September 4 to Sunday, September 9 at Robinson’s Place, Ermita, Manila. Once again the total prize fund is US$250,000 with $60,000 going to the eventual champions. The superb venue with plentiful balconies offers superb views of the playing arena, and crowds are in the thousands rather than hundreds.
Team Italy - Fabio Petroni & Bruno Muratore. The final round of 16 match was a 50/50 toss-up between Italy and Switzerland. Both had enjoyed decent wins in the first round, particularly the Swiss who dumped Philippines A out of the competition.
Dimitri Jungo and Ronni Regli, though were never in it as the duo of Fabio Petroni and Bruno Muratore did an Italian job on them.
Team Switzerland - Ronni Regli & Dimitri Jungo. Too many errors from the Swiss pair gave the Italians all the chances they were looking for and their game, whilst not ‘A’ standard was certainly good enough as they came with the shots when it mattered. They now face Poland for a place on the podium.
Muratore said, ”We had a really good start, with a few break and run outs. The game is so much easier when you break good. I think the break is 60-70% of this game.
"We had a lot of good situations in this match. It was the perfect match for us."
Petroni added, "The atmosphere here is incredible. This tournament is really unique. We usually play and nobody is watching but here there is a big crowd and television cameras.
“It's not good for the heart. What's easy in training is really difficult here. Look at the Philippines team they lost already. Holland lost. In this tournament anything can happen."
Team Italy - Fabio Petroni & Bruno Muratore.

Team England - Chris Melling & Darren Appleton. All photography courtesy of ©Carina Altomonte / Matchroom Sport Dynamite England makes light work of Thais
DARREN APPLETON and Chris Melling looked in top form as they steam-rollered last year’s runners-up Thailand 8-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool at Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.
It was a great performance from the Worlds No.1 and 5 and laid last year’s ghost to rest when they lost to Estonia in the first round. Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Kobkit Palajin had shocked a few teams last year before being derailed by Germany in the final, but they were no match for the English duo who shot into an early 3-0 lead.
The Thais were looking shaky and a poor miss in the fifth game from Palajin allowed England back in and they converted. The score moved to 4-1 when it should have been 3-2.
That was the turning point and the English pair then ran away with the match and they will now play Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.
Commented Appleton: "We were nervous at the beginning but then they let us off the hook early with some shocking misses. I could tell they were nervous; Nitiwat was dripping in sweat before the match."
Team Thailand's Kobkit Palajin. “After he missed, that calmed us down. The races are so short they are really cutthroat, you just hope to get enough chances."
Melling added, "I was nervous at the start but sometimes it's good to be nervous. I have a lot of respect for the Thais because I know they're good. We've missed one ball in two matches so we've played well. I think we have a great chance."
Team England - Darren Appleton & Chris Melling. The 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool runs from Tuesday September 4 to Sunday, September 9 at Robinson’s Place, Ermita, Manila. Once again the total prize fund is US$250,000 with $60,000 going to the eventual champions. Tickets for the extravaganza will be available at the venue on the day of play but with plentiful balconies offering superb views of the playing arena, organisers are anticipating crowds in the thousands rather than hundreds.
Team Chinese Taipei - Chen Hsin-ting & Hsu Han-en. In the second match the young Chinese Taipei duo of Hsu Han-en and Chen Hsin-ting held off a brave Japanese fight back to run out 8-6 winners and book their quarter-final place against England.
The Taiwanese kids, with a combined age of 37, won the qualifying event put on by the CTBA, and they appear to have come to Manila with one thing in mind. Even though there are more illustrious players currently operating in Taiwan, Hsu and Chen look every bit the part.
The Japanese pair of Naoyuki Oi and Satoshi Kawabata got off to a shocking start, finding themselves 3-0 and 5-1 down. However, they mounted a brave fight back, winning the next two and then following up with a couple of break and runs to level the score at 5-5.
They share the next two before the Taiwanese reach the hill at 7-6 before a golden break seals the deal.
Team Japan - Satoshi Kawabata & Naoyuki Oi.

Team USA - Rodney Morris & Shane Van Boening. All photography courtesy of ©Carina Altomonte / Matchroom Sport USA to face China in first Quarter Final
TEAM USA looked a different proposition to the team that stumbled through the first round as they switched to cruise control and took out Austria to reach the quarter finals of the 2012 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool.
8-4 was the score line and Rodney Morris and Shane Van Boening will be feeling confident as they attempt to emulate their feat of 2008 when they won this event in Rotterdam.
The Austrian pair of Albin Ouschan and Mario He were never at the races and He in particular was generous with his gifts. The nearest the Austrians came was when they got it back to 5-4 when it looked like the Americans were running away with it.
Team Austria - Mario He & Albin Ouschan. Ouschan though, scratched in the next to hand the rack to the USA and a couple more break and runs saw the Americans over the line where they will play an in form Chinese side.
Commented Morris: "Early in the match Shane made a really tough cut down the rail and we took the rack, I think right there that let them know that we were going to be doing some shooting today.
"We played solid. We broke a lot better than our first match. Like Efren said, you get the break going it makes the match a whole lot easier. I mean if you get 1 or 2 easy games in this short format, that's it.
"Mario looked like he was nervous, especially after he scratched early in the match, and after that miss, that was it," he added.
Team China - Li Hewen and Liu Haitao. In their second round match, China looked all business as they trounced Spain 8-1 and the pairing of Li Hewen and Liu Haitao will surely fancy their chances against the USA in their quarter-final match tomorrow.
Their shot-making was outstanding and they had the break down. It started to go south for Spain in rack two when there was some controversy. Li Hewen saw the clock run out while he was at the table and the Chinese had already used their extension.
Team Spain - Francisco Diaz-Pizarro & David Alcaide. Referee Michaela Tabb said that she thought that the Chinese had asked for that first extension, but it turned out they hadn’t so Li was allowed to shoot again and he made a massive full table pot.
The Spaniards protested but Tabb stuck by her decision and China were 2 – 0 up. They broke and ran the next two matches and the game was effectively over as the Chinese romped home.
