Straight Pool or Ten Ball? You couldn't make it up!!!
All credit to Mickey Flynns for being bold enough to stage the UK's very first straight pool tournament. It was always going to be a risky affair, but apparently even riskier than we first thought, as a "straw poll" of the early birds revealed that most had only practiced straight pool for the first time this week and with only moderate success.
There were some notable exceptions. David Walsh claims to be a straight pool genius, and Imran Majid only practiced for a few hours earlier this week, but managed a very respectable 120 break, but the majority were fairly uncertain of the rules despite a quick briefing by the Tournament Director and there were plenty of questions to be handled during play.
BUT... (And here's the mad thing)... After the first round of 14.1 over-ran it's allotted time, the whole tournament has reverted to Ten Ball.. AND NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON ARGUED!!! Can you believe that of pool players?
Sure, everyone agreed it was a very weird thing to happen, to turn up for a straight pool event, and then it changes to 10-Ball after the first round, but even weirder is that there were no scenes of discord, just good humoured acceptance all round!

Indiana Jones vs The Plague From The Hague
On Saturday 29th November 2008, the night before the Straight Pool Competition, Mickey Flynn's are pleased to announce that there will be a 10 Ball Challenge Match between local 9 Ball hero Ricardo "Indiana" Jones, and the Netherland's legendary champion, Alex "The Plague From The Hague" Lely.
The game is Ten Ball, the time is 7pm, it's a race to 21 format, for an as yet unspecified amount. All spectators, fans, well-wishers and rail-birds are welcome.

The 2nd Annual Showdown in Seoul featured World Champion Semih Sayginer (TUR) against World Trickshot Champion Stefano Pelinga (ITL), and Jeanette Lee vs Yu Ram Cha. The popular Sopooong Department Store hosted the special matches which also scheduled Turkish Champ Neslihan Gurel, Korea #2 Eun Ji Park, and celebrities such as internationally acclaimed pop artist Nancy Lang and Uzbekistan's top fashion model Jamilra. The Dragon Promotions special event consisted of players playing a combination of pool and carom for Korea's top entertainment channel XTM.

PHILIPPINES VS WORLD GRAND POOL SHOWDOWN
Quezon City, the city of stars, will have a constellation of the world’s brightest pool stars when it plays host to the much-anticipated Q.C. Invasion: Quezon City-Philippines vs the World Grand VILLARDS Showdown on December 2 to 4 at the posh Trinoma Mall.
Eight of the best Filipino cue artists, led by the sport’s living legend Efren “Bata” Reyes, will stake the country’s claim as the best billiards-playing nation in the planet against a selection of equally-potent from the rest of the globe in this event presented by Senator Manny Villar’s Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports, and the Quezon City government led by Mayor Sonny Belmonte.
“We are very proud and honored to host this exciting showdown between the best Filipino billiards players and their topnotch foreign counterparts,” said Quezon City Council Majority Floor Leader Ariel Inton, the chief proponent of the event, during the press conference yesterday at the Quezon City Hall.

Finland's mighty Mika Immonen has won the 41st All Japan Championships, prolonging a winning streak that started out in October and hasn't stopped yet.
Asia has been considered, in the new millennium, the continent with the strongest players. At this year's event, this field was littered with Asia's best with names such as Taiwan's World Champion Wu Chia Ching, Kuo Po Cheng, China's Li He-wen and Challenge of Champions Winner Fu Jianbo, Japan's former World 9-Ball Champion Kunihiko Takahashi, and Korean Champions Young Hwa Jeong and Seung Woo Ryu. Throw in western counterparts World 9-Ball and 14.1 Champ Thorsten Hohmann (GER), World 9-ball and 8-Ball Champ Ralf Souquet (GER), and USA top pros Rodney Morris, Charlie Williams, and Max Eberle. Then add in arguably the toughest country, the Phillippines, with Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamente, Alex Pagualyan, Ronnie Alcano, Dennis Orcullo, Marlon Manalo, Antonio Gabica, Warren Kiamco, Ramil Gallego, Lee Van Corteza, and Antonio Lining.
In this 128 man super elite field, even the hottest pool player in the world could easily settle for a top 10 finish and be happy. That is why currently Mika Immonen is the world's strongest player.

It's been a while since there has been a truly amateur 9-ball tournament, and with the top professionals barred from this event it should offer a cracking opportunity for UK players to test themselves against a more modestly talented field.
