 | 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool - Day 5 Results |
2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool Outland Prins Alexanderlaan 37 3068 PN Rotterdam Netherlands www.worldcupofpool.com www.matchroomsport.com www.outland.nl
Tuesday-Sunday 7-12 October 2008
Team England, Daryl Peach and Mark Gray, with referee Michaela Tabb standing by. Peach: Anything less than World Cup victory is a failure (Pro9 Exclusive)
England 9 – 7 Germany
DARYL Peach and Mark Gray moved England into the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool semi-finals and then insisted: 'Only a tournament win is good enough'.
England had never had a team advance past the last 16 phase in the prestigious team competition, which features 32 sides from 31 nations from around the world.
But that record has changed this year as Peach and Gray continued a fine week at the Outland nightclub in Rotterdam, Holland.
Wins over Malta and Canada moved them into the quarter-finals before they secured a 9-7 victory against the fourth seeds Germany, a side consisting of pool superstars Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert.
England will now face the 2007 World Cup winners China and their side of Li He-wen and Fu Jian-bo in the semi-finals.
Peach, the reigning World 9-Ball Champion, insisted England could win the event and that anything less would be a bad result.
"We came here with no other intentions but to win it and nothing has changed," said Peach. "But, at the same time, it's one match at a time and we will be determined, positive and looking to win our next match.
"The Chinese are both individually good players and had some good results worldwide. They also play well as a team and seem to understand each other well - a bit like ourselves.
"Against Germany it was a match with few errors from both sides but from our point of view I was a bit disappointed in how we broke. We didn't have much success so we're going to try and rectify that."
Gray, the current European number one, was expecting a tough encounter when they play China in the semi-finals on Sunday afternoon.
"They are the defending champions and the form team over the last two years as they won five matches last year and three this year," said Gray.
"They're very good potters but I would say we've got a bit more knowledge if the game gets drawn out and that should favour us. It will come down to the break again and we need to improve and stop missing the silly balls."
"This was a good victory for us and it had been the first time England had even got to the quarter-final.
"To beat a pair like Ralf Souquet and Thomas Engert is a great result. We said before that if we could beat Germany then we would fancy our chances of going all the way and nothing has changed.
"For me it would be the first world title and a great thing to have on the CV, while Daryl is the current 9-ball World Champion and it would be a great achivement for him. It would also put him in pole position to get in this year's Mosconi Cup.
"We've proved that we're the best combination and hopefully it will be a combination that takes us to the title and works for years to come."

Jasmin Ouschan guides Team Austria into the World Cup of Pool Quarter-Finals. Austria and China Through to Quarters - Philippines Win Opener in Style
Austria 8 – 6 Belgium
TEAM AUSTRIA, featuring pool superstar Jasmin Ouschan and the solid Martin Kempter, completed a fantastic win over Belgium by 8-6 to advance to the quarter-final stages of the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool.
There was full credit to their opponents Belgium, comprising Serge Das and Noel Bruynooghe, who battled throughout and only fell behind at the closing stages. It was a match that had everything; safety, shotmaking, drama and real competitiveness.

Roy Gerards and Gijs van Helmond - Team Holland B. Holland B Oust Fancied Taiwan - Unknown Qualifiers Stun Wu and Co
Holland B 8 - 5 Taiwan
HOLLAND B, a team made up of 19 year-old Roy Gerards and Gijs van Helmond, produced a stunning upset as they held their nerve to deposit heavy favourites Taiwan out of the competition.
The duo had won a qualification tournament in Rotterdam three weeks ago, beating Rico Diks and Alex Lely in the final match.
However, they were given little hope, against a Taiwanese team consisting of recent World Tenball finalist Wu Chia-ching and fellow countryman Wang Hung-hsiang.
They overturned the formbook in an inspired display at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam, aided and abetted by some glaring errors from the Taiwanese.

Begian's Serge Das and Noel Bruynooghe celebrate their victory in Holland. Dutch Lose Battle of Lowlands - Giant Killing Belgians Do It Again
Belgium 8 – 3 Holland A
HOLLAND A, consisting of Niels Feijen and Nick van den Berg, went spinning out of the 2008 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool as their neighbours Belgium put in a composed performance to comfortably win their first round match at the Outland Nightclub in Rotterdam.
8 – 3 was the scoreline as the Belgian duo of the classy Serge Das and gutsy Noel Bruynooghe were always ahead of the game. Both sides had plenty of support but the Dutch duo, looking a little ragged at times, did not perform at their best.
The Belgians came in as late reserves last year and reached the quarter-final, including a victory over a Taiwanese side of 2005 World Champion Wu Chia-ching and Yang Chung-shun.
This victory was all the sweeter as the Dutch and the Belgians have a long-standing rivalry in sporting arenas.

Alex Lely with fellow finalist Alex Kuiper Alex Lely reports the results from our favourite club in Amsterdam!!!
Other than on some 10-ball world championship in Manilla, won by some Brit, picking up a mere $100K, main focus on last Sunday was of course on the 10-ball tournament in Club 8, Amsterdam.
54 players coughed up the fifteen Euro, inspired as they were to have a go at 10-ball. Only races to 5, many players could win this one, although Lely was favorite to win as the Terminator, El Nino and Houdgini were still in Manila.

BOBBY McGRATH WINS 2008 INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHAMPIONSHIP
The 2008 ESPN ZONE BILLIARDS SHOOTOUT was held October 1 in Las Vegas. Bobby McGrath defeated Dave Pearson for the INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE crown and the $40,000 purse. ESPN Zone Las Vegas was host to the event, which was taped for three 1-hour telecasts on ESPN and the first ever to be broadcast in High Definition. The Third Annual INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE drew an international lineup battling for the $40,000 winner-take-all prize. The action in Speed Pool is fast and furious (the speed of light compared to 9-ball) with two sets, twelve racks in each set, the first set Straight Pool and the second set 8-Ball. Players routinely run racks of fifteen balls in about 1-minute and the player with the lowest accumulated time for twelve racks wins the match.
