Roberto "Superman" Gomez will battle with Daryl "The Dazzler" Peach in the final.

IT’S GOMEZ v PEACH FOR WPC GLORY

The final of the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship will be an England v Philippines affair as Daryl Peach of Blackpool takes on Roberto Gomez of Manila in a race-to-17 match at the Araneta Coliseum at 15.30 local time on Sunday.

Both players won through their quarter and semi-final games in emphatic style in a day of pool that contained some outstanding play as well as moments of drama and controversy.

Betting firms have installed Gomez as a 1/2 favourite while Peach is the outsider at 6/4. The prize at stake is $100,000 but more importantly the title of World Pool Champion and Gomez will attempt to become the third Filipino player in four years to lift this coveted crown.

Peach becomes the first Englishman ever to reach the final and hopes to emulate the success of Thorsten Hohmann who was the last European to win the event in 2003.

The likeable Englishman put on his career-best performance to oust betting favourite Francisco Bustamante from the competition in the quarter-finals.

TWO BRITISH PLAYERS IN SEMI-FINALS OF HISTORIC WPC

Daryl Peach and Karl Boyes have both won their Quarter-Finals matches in spectacular fashion to advance into the Semi-Finals of the 2007 World Pool Championships in Manila.

The history-making achievement is the best result for a British player ever - let alone two players, and we send our heart-felt congratulations from all the Pro9'ers back here to the two Pro9'ers over there!

WPC WHITTLES DOWN TO EIGHT

There are just eight players left in the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship as day seven completed at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City, Manila.

The Philippines has the most players in the quarter-finals with Roberto ‘Superman’ Gomez, and the two Bustamante’s, Francisco and Joven flying the flag for another repeat home victory following Ronnie Alcano’s success this time last year.

Surprisingly there are two Englishmen in the mix still and more surprisingly both Karl Boyes and Daryl Peach both reside in the Northern seaside town of Blackpool.

Boyes had a great win over European No.1 Konstantin Stepanov while Peach battled out a fine 11-5 win over sole remaining German Harry Stolka.

16 CLOSE IN ON WPC TITLE

FOLLOWING THE conclusion of day six of the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship there are just 16 players left chasing the biggest prize in the game.

The Philippines have the largest contingent with four players left in the competition as Francisco Bustamante won a terrific encounter with Holland ’s Nick van den Berg.

With a sell-out arena crowd at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City , Manila , the popular Filipino trailed 4-0 to the young Dutchman before gaining control of the table and running into a 9-4 lead.

ENCOUNTERS WITH EARL - By Ted Lerner
By Ted Lerner

Manila, Philippines -- It seems everyone backstage at the World Pool Championship has a personal story to tell about the great Earl Strickland and his bizarre rants and raves. Earl’s always looking for a sympathetic ear in order to unload a litany of complaints about the world in general. If you’re a player, a guest, or working the event, it’s only a matter of time before you will stumble upon Earl and receive an earful about his sorry life, how he can’t win this tournament, he’s past his prime, the table conditions slurp, the Taiwanese are hogging the practice tables, etc. Sometimes it’s Earl who corners people into listening. Most times, though, I believe it’s people who seek out Earl. We humans are easily entertained and the sights and sounds of a grown man in the stages of psychological meltdown seem to be especially appealing.

I always make sure to say hello to Earl when I see him at a tournament because, well, I actually like Earl. I’ve talked privately with him on many occasions and found him to be a nice guy. It’s obvious he’s troubled about the world so, in my feel sorry mode, I lend him an ear. Though I’m not sure if he really cares about me. I sense he simply wants to vent and rant on anyone within earshot and doesn’t care who’s standing in front of him. And truth be told, his tirades can be fun to listen to. For a few moments, anyway.

PEACH SENDS ALCANO CRASHING

ENGLAND’S DARYL PEACH has secured his greatest result ever by defeating reigning World Pool Champion Ronnie Alcano – in his own backyard.

Peach, 35, beat Filipino Alcano 10-6 in the last 64 of the 2007 World Pool Championships, which is being held at the Araneta Coliseum, Manila, Philippines.

The tournament, organised by England-based Matchroom Sport, is the biggest pool event of the year, and is broadcast live across Asia and on Sky Sports in the UK.

As well as his tough opponent, Peach also had to battle against a partisan crowd of more than 1,000 people in the venue that hosted the legendary ‘Thriller in Manilla’ heavyweight title fight between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in 1975.

QUALIFYING PLAY CONCLUDES AS FIELD SPLITS TO 64

PLAY HAS concluded on the final day of round one action at the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship at the Araneta Coliseum, Quezon City , Manila as the 128 man field has been reduced to 64 for the straight knock-out stages of the event.

The most dominant representation comes from the Philippines with 13 players in the last 64 shake up, closely followed by Chinese Taipei with 10. Disappointingly, the USA with an original entry of 11 now only has four survivors in round two.

There are now five days to go in the $400,000 event which is televised live throughout Asia on the ESPN Star network as well as Sky Sports in the UK.

INPUT DOES NOT EQUAL OUTPUT

Manila, Philippines -- Some players call it getting in “dead stroke.” Others call it “free flowing mode.” Yet others call it being “in the zone.” Whatever the moniker, it is the Holy Grail of playing for pool players. It’s that space where everything seems to come together at once, and you play perfect pool, no longer thinking about the mechanics of your stroke, no longer fretting about previously missed balls, no longer thinking of what lies ahead in a match. You have stopped caring and are just playing, living in the moment, unfettered by outside distractions or worries. Everything is so darn easy; the stroke just flows, the balls drop dead center, the cue ball goes exactly where you want it.
