“Dynamite” Darren Appleton at the World Pool Championship qualifiers A SLOG IN THE MUD - By Ted Lerner
Manila, Philippines -- It’s all about the grind, and who has the stamina, the will, and yes, it being professional 9-ball, the luck on their side to prevail. It’s a brutally difficult combination of factors to pull together, and it tests the inner and outer makeup of even the most seasoned professionals out there. Well, this is for the World Pool Championship, so why would you have it any other way?

2007 Philippines World Pool Championship - Latest
WITH THE pre-event qualifying tournament for the 2007 Philippines World Pool Championship set to wrap up today, it’s fair to say that proceedings have been dominated by the players from Chinese Taipei.
Taking place at the Star Billiards Center in Grace Village, Quezon City, the qualifying event boasted a top-level field of nearly 170 players with ten separate tournaments over five days with the winner of each reaching the main event.
With eight out of the ten events already contested, the Taiwanese have bagged four spots in the main event, with a further six players falling at the final hurdle.

A very happy Mark Gray with the Dynamic Swiss Open 2007 Trophy ©JP Parmentier - EPBF "Rule Britannia" as Mark Gray triumphs in Swiss Euro Tour Final!
Mark Gray has won the Swiss Euro Tour after wins over Niels Feijen (L16 10-8 ), Ruslan Chinakov (QF 10-7), David Alcaide (SF 10-9), and Vilmos Foldes (F 10-7). This is Gray's first Euro Tour victory and will be even sweeter as it guarantees the former snooker player a spot in the 2008 World Pool Championships too.
The British are making great progress into Europe - Jonni Fulcher was the title-holder, having won this event last year, and this now means that three of the last four Euro Tours have been won by a British player.
197 players participated at the “Dynamic Swiss Open” in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, representing no fewer than 31 different countries. Even Mexico was represented at this event as 2000 WPC runner up Ismael Paez entered the tournament whilst visiting Europe.

 | A beer, a date, a bet, and the American game of pool - by Ted Lerner |
The World Pool Championship Araneta Coliseum Quezon City Metro Manila Philippines www.matchroomsport.com www.hey-joe.net www.tedlerner.com
3-11 November 2007
Angeles City, Philippines -- Last year’s World Pool Championship final in Manila featured two players, Ralf Souquet and Ronnie Alcano, who, on the surface, appeared to have little in common. In fact they and their respective countries, Germany and the Philippines, would appear to be polar opposites in just about everything. Except for one caveat that went largely unnoticed, however; both countries were introduced to the sport of pool through the long time presence of the American military in their respective nations. Indeed that’s what was so fascinating about last year’s final in Manila. Two great “American” pool playing countries doing battle for the world title.
It’s what happens when you have your military camped around the world. Your culture--the good, the bad and the ugly- goes with you. Imagine if peace miraculously ever does come to Iraq, 30 to 40 years from now you’ll probably see Iraqi pool players making big strides in the sport. Pool is one of the few American imports the fun-killing fundamentalists over there could probably tolerate. Chains of Hooters restaurants in Baghdad obviously won’t cut it.
