2016 Betfair Mosconi Cup - Day 4 - Europe rout USA

Europe 11 – 3 USA

Jayson Shaw 5 – 1 Mike Dechaine

THE EUROPEANS needed just one match to retain the 2016 Betfair Mosconi Cup as Jayson Shaw had the honour of potting the winning 9 ball as he eased past Mike Dechaine 5-1 to spark wild celebrations at the Alexandra Palace. Team Europe entered the fray carrying a 10-3 lead after dominating the first three days of the competition and they delivered a crushing defeat to an American side that looked out of their depth at times in front of a very vocal 2,000 strong crowd.

Shaw, who came into the event on the back of a run of brilliant form, never looked too comfortable over the first three days. However, he came with some terrific shots to banish Dechaine to the sidelines and secure the European’s seventh consecutive victory.

A delighted Shaw said, “There were a lot of nerves out there but you have to stay calm and take every ball one at a time. It is easy to get hyped up with everyone screaming. It felt pretty good to make the winning 9 ball. I had a pretty good year and had a couple of dreams about making the final 9 ball and it came true.

“We have five great guys on the team who all fight for each other and support each other, stick together. Now I have played in it, I want to play the Mosconi Cup every year.”

2016 Betfair Mosconi Cup - Day 3 - Europe on the brink

Europe 10 – 3 USA

Appleton / Feijen 5 – 2 Dechaine / Van Boening
Shaw / Ouschan 5 – 3 Morris / Woodward
Albin Ouschan 5 – 4 Skyler Woodward
Gray / Appleton 4 – 5 Bergman / Morris

TEAM AMERICA lives to fight another day at the Alexandra Palace as the pairing of Rodney Morris and Justin Bergman won the final match of the evening in the final rack to stall European celebrations at the 2016 Betfair Mosconi Cup. With the Europeans leading 7-2 going into the final session, they need to win all four of the evening matches to reach the required 11 points to retain the Mosconi Cup for the sixth time.

“We can smell the Cup!” said Euro captain Marcus Chamat.

“It is really hard to win every match but we were close. We have Jayson first tomorrow and then Niels so we have a good line-up for the first two tomorrow.

“I wanted Jayson and Albin to play together because I think they are going to be on the team for many years to come, they are the future of the European team. Jayson wants this so much. He has been watching Mosconi Cup since he was small and this is a dream come true for him to be here and tomorrow he is first up so he can go and finish this up. It would be a perfect end to an amazing year for Jayson to win it tomorrow.”
The Betfair Mosconi Cup is the annual Europe v USA 9 ball showdown. It runs from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th December with all sessions getting underway at 18.30 GMT. There are a potential 21 singles and doubles matches with the first team to reach 11 carrying off the famous trophy.

Darren Appleton and Niels Feijen won the opening game of the session as they defeated Shane Van Boening and Mike Dechaine 5-2. Van Boening is enduring a miserable time in London having failed to have won a point from five matches and looked all at sea this evening.

TEAM EUROPE piled the misery on a floundering American side to take a five point lead into the third day of the 2016 Betfair Mosconi Cup at the Alexandra Palace in London. They won three of the four Wednesday night matches to leave the USA a mountainous task if they are to win the Mosconi Cup for the first time in eight years.

European captain Marcus Chamat was in no doubt as to how the day had gone; “What can you say, I thought today I would relax, watch some games, but it is very hard not to get involved in every game – the games are so tough and my players are playing so good so I am over the moon, and especially with a score like this.

“The mood in the group is electric and we feel like we are on top of the world. The confidence in the guys and the charisma everybody has, it is a dream team.

“I played the Mosconi Cup for so many years and I know a lot of things can take turns, anything can happen at the Mosconi Cup. Today we showed how well the guys are playing and how well the team is grouped together.

“We will go back to what we discussed before we started – we are here to make history and tie the cup overall and for that we need to win every match, played like the score is 0-0.”

For American captain, Mark Wilson it was another draining day that saw his team fall further behind; “We are a little disappointed because we came over here playing well and we are expecting to win. We have trained and worked hard all year, prepared to win and now we feel like we still deserve to win. We have to come out and win tomorrow. To win the Mosconi Cup you have to dominate a day so we will have to make that day tomorrow.”

TEAM EUROPE showed exactly why they are big favourites to retain the 23rd annual Betfair Mosconi Cup as they enjoyed a convincing opening session, winning four out of the five matches to take a 4-1 lead into day two. It was the worst possible start to the event for the Americans who have not won the Mosconi Cup since 2009. Even after just one day they face a mammoth task against a European side that looked confident throughout.

Commented European captain Marcus Chamat, “The first day is always really tough. The way they put out their team, they came with their strongest but I feel there are no weak links in my team and whatever I came out with today, I had four aces.

“My point of view was to put Albin out first because he made the winning 9 last year, so I wanted to start off where we ended. That worked out well, and Mark played awesome in the match. Then Niels went to work, and he played great.
“For the day to end with Darren beating Shane, meant a lot to me, to him and to the team. The last match is always important to get under your belt. Darren fights with his heart just like I did when I was playing, I wanted it so bad and he wants it so bad too. It proved a point.

With 2,000 rabid fans in the Alexandra Palace, the vast majority of them pro-European, the atmosphere was wild from the off and the show opened with the customary team match where all ten players compete in consecutive racks.

Another one for Jasmin

Jasmin Ouschan just won the Treviso Women Open in BHR Best Western Hotel in Treviso, Italy, with a 7:3 victory over Kamila Khodjaeva (BEL).

The final match started with an expected lead for Ouschan. Khodjaeva seemed to be nervous since she missed several possible shots. However, during the course of the match Khodjaeva stayed within close range to Ouschan and the Austrian suddenly started making unnecessary mistakes.

When leading 3:2, Ouschan missed an easy 7-ball and allowed Khodjaeva to tie the match at 3:3. After having taken her time-out, Ouschan still seemed to be a bit off track. She missed shots and ran out of position.

That all allowed Khodjaeva to keep the match open for a while. However, Ouschan turned out to be the stronger player today since Khodjaeva could not benefit from Ouschan’s mistakes as the match continued. Ouschan did not necessarily play her best pool but Khodjaeva was not able to turn the tide in the match.

Finally, Jasmin Ouschan did not allow Kamila Khodjaeva any more point and took the match with a convincing 7:3 result over her opponent.

Alcaide wins Dynamic Billard Treviso Open

In a more than thrilling final match, David Alcaide (ESP) won the Dynamic Billard Treviso Open against Joshua Filler (GER) with 9:6.

The final match was as high class as expected. Alcaide and Filler came up with a great performance and delivered some high class pool action. However, due to the pressure also some mistakes have been committed by both players.

The fact that the final match and the semi-finals are played with a shot clock does its share to even raise the pressure. Alcaide had the better start in the final. He ran away with 3:0 before Filler got started. But the young German hung in there. He used his chances whenever given and kept the match a close and thrilling affair.

After nine racks, the scoreboard displayed a 5:4 lead for Alcaide with Filler to break. The rack turned into a safety battle and actually it looked like Filler would be able to force Alcaide to commit a foul. Alcaide answered this by playing a deliberate foul and putting the 2-ball and the 6-ball together. The rack was dominated by tactical play. In the end, Alcaide pocketed the deciding ball and got to a 6:4 lead. That was one important point in the final match.

Instead of Filler levelling the score at 5:5, Alcaide was now 6:4 up with his own break shot to come. He had an illegal break and Filler cleared to stay close with 5:6. The next break was Filler’s and he was really unlucky. He had three balls down but the cue ball got kicked and scratched in the corner pocket. Again, Alcaide got away with a 2-point-lead with his own break shot coming up. This time, he capitalised from his break shot. He almost ran out of position on the 3-ball but Lady Luck was on his side.

Alcaide got on the hill with an 8:5 lead over Filler. Filler won the next rack before Alcaide got to the table with his own break, leading 8:6. Alcaide missed the 2-ball but left the cue ball very close to another object ball for Filler. The German kid used a rest but touched the 3-ball while pocketing the 2-ball. With ball in hand, Alcaide conquered the table, took the match with 9:6 and won his second Euro-Tour after 2009.

Maciol wins the Silver Medal

In an exciting and thrilling final match in the U19 division with China’s Kong De Jing, Daniel Maciol could not get his best performance on the table and lost clearly with 2:11.

Throughout the whole event, Maciol demonstrated high class pool on a solid level. In the final, he missed some makable shots, fell out of position a few times and had an opponent who did not forgive him any mistake at all. Whenever Maciol showed a weakness, Kong benefitted from it and showed no mercy with the Polish. All Maciol’s break did not work for him in the whole match. Kong performed solidly and won the match very clearly but nonetheless deserved with 11:2.
