A POOL ‘THRILLA IN MANILA’ UNFOLDS TODAY by Ronnie Nathanielsz

The biggest sports event since the now famous "Thrilla in Manila" featuring the memorable heavyweight battle between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier some 31 years ago unfolds at the beautiful Philippine International Convention Center at noon today (Saturday) when 128 of the finest pool players in the world match their wizardry in the 2006 Philippine World Pool Championships.

Not since the October 1, 1975 "Thrilla" which is considered among the greatest heavyweight title fights of all-time has the attention of sports fans around the world been riveted to Manila which hosts the most prestigious 9-ball event in history.

A Royal Appointment

England’s Darren Appleton faces one of the most unusual opponents of his career when the 2006 World Pool Championship kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) – a Royal Prince and son of one of the richest men in the world.

Appleton , 30 from Pontefract, West Yorks has drawn Prince Muhtadee Billah, son of the Sultan of Brunei, and one of the top pool players from his country.

The Yorkshireman is one of the nine-strong contingent of UK players assembled in Manila , Philippines for the biggest and richest 9 ball pool event on the calendar.

Gleaves Triumphant in Birmingham

Matthew ‘The Mole’ Gleaves from Darlington had a spectacular weekend in winning the 2006 British Wheelchair Pool Players Association (BWPPA) Birmingham Open at Riley’s American Pool and Snooker Club.

This was Gleaves’s first BWPPA tournament success and although being currently ranked No.2 on the largest wheelchair tour in Europe he has come close at several events in the past. On this occasion he beat current European 9 Ball Champion and British No.1 Roy Kimberley in a thrilling 9-6 final.

Hsia and Lining to Bolster Starting Line-Up

Two more top drawer players made it through the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship Qualifying Event yesterday as action resumed at the plush Star Billiards Center in Quezon City.

With near on 120 players competing in the toughest Q School in World Pool, the tried and tested names of Hsia Hui-kai (Taiwan) and the Philippines’ Antonio Lining won Events 5 and 6 respectively.
