Champs open defence with Ashes showdown

Defending Champions England A will be getting their defence of the 2015 World Cup of Pool underway with a showdown against Ashes rivals Australia on the opening evening of the tournament. Taking place on the evening of Tuesday 22nd September at the famous York Hall in Bethnal Green, England’s Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton will be looking continue Australia’s dismal winless run in the competition.

Other marquee matches in the opening round of the $250,000 pairs tournament include last year’s runners-up Holland against the well-supported Indian team and betting favourites the Philippines against the dangerous Russian duo. Both matches are slated for Wednesday evening.

Previous champions China get their World Cup underway on the opening afternoon against debutants Romania while 2012 winners Finland face Belgium. Other big name teams include USA (Shane Van Boening and Mike Dechaine) against Qatar and Taiwan against Estonia.

Twomey On fire At T9B As Ipswich dominates again

Total9ball was back again at our home in St Albans at the Hurricane Room on Saturday 22nd August. This was event 6 of the 8 event Amateur Series of 2015. Unfortunately this was the first event of the season to not reach the full 32 player field however T9B were not going to let this spoil the event for the 28 attending players. T9B made a decision to top up the prize pool to match the prize fund of the 5 previously played Amateur Series events this season.

Event 6 kicked off at 10.30am with Richard Twomey immediately in action against Shakz Islam, Rich was starting the match on -3 racks while Shakz began +2. Shakz chances were few and far between as Twomey limited him to just one rack and prevailed 7v3. Nick Hampton needed all racks available to get the better of the only female entrant Aorr Angel 7v6. Dan Lim gave Phil Morgan a big welcome back to the Total9ball scene with an impressive 7v1 result, while Brian Cassidy served up Mark Parker 7 racks to 3. Elliott Sanderson was one of the furthest travelling players in the field as he drove down from Barnsley on the day to compete in this event. Elliott didn’t look fatigued from the long drive in the slightest however as he produced good wins against Jay Davies 7v3 and Rich Twomey 7v6.

World-class line up set for York Hall showdown

With the annual World Cup of Pool coming back to London this September, Matchroom Sport can announce the 32 teams and players set to contest the annual $250,000 pairs tournament. Taking place at pool’s fiercest venue, the York Hall in Bethnal Green, the World Cup runs from Tuesday 22nd to 27th September.

Defending champions are England A with Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton looking to become the first pair to successfully defend their crown. Competition will be tough though, with a host of previous winners and finalists taking part.

Germany will be represented by 2011 champions Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet and 2012 winners Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen (Finland) will be once again taking part. America’s Shane Van Boening, a winner with Rodney Morris in 2008, is paired with Mike Dechaine this time, while Li Hewen, a two-time winner in 2007 and 2010 will be partnered by Liu Haitao as they make a run for title number three for China.

Holland, desperately unlucky to be runners up in 2013 and 2014, will be looking to go one better as Niels Feijen and Nick Van den Berg team up once again. Daryl Peach and Mark Gray, who came so close for England in 2008, will also be trying to repeat those performances.

Other highly fancied teams include the Philippines which pairs former World No.1 Carlo Biado with under-rated Warren Kiamco and Taiwan – World 10 Ball champion Ko Pin Yi and Chang Yu Lung. Team Austria will also fancy their chances as World No.1 Albin Ouschan and Mario He pair up one again.

Shane Van Boening (USA)
8-2 Darren Appleton (ENG)

Semi-Finals
Shane Van Boening (USA)
8-0 Liu Haitao (CHN)
Darren Appleton (ENG) 8-4 Mark Gray (ENG)

SOUTH DAKOTA’S Shane Van Boening became the first player in the 23 year history of the PartyPoker World Pool Masters to retain the title as he beat Darren Appleton (England) 8-2 at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester.

Alex Lely and Dennis Orcollo had reached the final in their defence of the title but Van Boening went one better with a blistering display of breaking to take the title and the $20,000 winner’s cheque. Van Boening also joins Ralf Souquet, Francisco Bustamante and Thomas Engert as multiple winners of the Masters.

Commented Van Boening; “It feels awesome to win. Before I came here I practiced for almost a week and that work has paid off, it is amazing. The more you practice the better you get and that has really built up my confidence.

“I don’t know what happened with the golden breaks. The ball came around and hit the 9 ball and it went in. I hit the break hard so it can happen.

“It is very hard to win the Masters. You have all the best players in the world, 16 top players and especially playing against Darren Appleton in the final, who is one of the very best pool players.

“I got a lot of fortunate rolls, I made three golden breaks tonight with the one in the semi-final. It is very exciting for me to be the first player to win the Masters in consecutive years,” he added.

Down to the last four in Manchester

Quarter-Finals
Shane Van Boening (USA)
8-5 Waleed Majid (QAT)
Darren Appleton (ENG) 8-5 Johnny Archer (USA)
Ralf Souquet (GER) 6-8 Mark Gray (ENG)

The 2015 PartyPoker World Pool Masters is down to the last four as Shane Van Boening, Darren Appleton and Mark Gray all won through their afternoon quarter-final matches to join Liu Haitao in the semi-finals on Sunday night at the Victoria Warehouse.

In the final match of the session, Mark Gray put in a terrific performance to defeat Ralf Souquet following an excellent comeback as the match slipped away from him. At 6-3 down Gray looked to have it all against him but a miss from the German put him back in and from there he never looked back.

Said Gray, “I am well chuffed. I was 6-3 down and breaking very well. I took one rack away which I should have ran out and the other times I was breaking well but the white was getting kicked and wasn’t leaving me a shot.

“Ralf got a shot every time but I stuck in there and at 6-3 he misses a long 1 ball and I cleared for 6-4. For somebody like me who isn’t known as a big breaker to get three break and runs at a crucial time is massive.

“I had it yesterday against Ko Pin Yi. I was 7-3 up and he is known as one of the biggest breakers in the world and I went from 7-3 to 7-5 up without getting a shot and you think you are going to lose 7-8 without getting another shot.

“Today I was in his position at 6-3 down but I knew if I could make balls off the break and have a shot I could still win, and that is what happened.

“I am as good a potter as anybody else but breaking wise there are bigger breakers here than me. But I found the break and was running out there to win the match.

Liu through to semis as Souquet and Archer roll back years

Round One
Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) 3-8 Ralf Souquet (GER)
Johnny Archer (USA) 8-2 James Georgiadis (AUS)

Quarter-Finals
Niels Feijen (HOL) 6-8 Liu Haitao (CHN)

Liu Haitao, the 33 year-old from Neimenggu, China became the first man through to the semi-finals of the PartyPoker World Pool Masters as he overcame Holland’s Niels Feijen in a hard fought match at the Victoria Warehouse.

Liu, the sharp-shooting World No.10, had a great start, aided by two misses by Feijen and it allowed him to take a 6-2 lead. Feijen though regrouped and won the next three to get within one rack of Liu.

Momentum was stalled though when he broke dry in rack 12 and Liu ran out to move to 7-5. Feijen won rack 13 to stay alive but a push out to a jump with no shot on the 1 ball let Liu regain momentum with a quality jump shot. From there he took the rack and the victory.

“I had the better luck in that match than Niels did,” said Liu.

“He made a simple mistake in the second rack and later in the eighth rack and they were key points. He made those mistakes and that put more pressure on him.

“I am very pleased with how I played tonight, and I had some good luck. I am excited to have made it to the semi-finals of the tournament. I have played two top-level players and I know tomorrow I will face another tough opponent whoever it will be as everybody in the tournament is a world-class player. I will have to keep my focus and play at my highest level if I am to win the World Pool Masters.”

For Feijen it was a disappointing evening; “I didn’t start so well. The crowd was completely different today, much quieter than last night. That had nothing to do with it but it made it a bit of a different setting.

“I missed an easy 7 in the second rack but I think the break was the major thing in the match. I was hitting it well but I got some bad runs. From 6-2 I clawed my way to 6-5, I had started to play pretty well but then on the next break everything landing in front of a hole but nothing went in.

Double delight for English pair

Waleed Majid (QAT) 8-4 Daryl Peach (ENG)
Ko Pin Yi (TPE) 5-8 Mark Gray (ENG)
Darren Appleton (ENG) 8-4 Mateusz Sniegocki (POL)

Mosconi Cup team mates Darren Appleton and Mark Gray both enjoyed first round wins at the 2015 PartyPoker World Pool Masters as first round play continued on Saturday afternoon at the Victoria Warehouse, Manchester.

First Gray turned over highly fancied Ko Pin Yi in an upset and then Darren made light work of Poland’s Mateusz Sniegocki. Earlier England’s Daryl Peach was ousted by up-and-coming Qatari star Waleed Majid.

In the opening match of the session, seeded player Waleed Majid took care of an out-of-sorts Daryl Peach (England) by an 8-4 score line. There were plenty of errors as each player gifted the other chances as the score moved to 3-3.

With ball in hand following Majid’s failed escape from a snooker, Peach messed up as he missed the 6 to hand the rack back. The Qatari though scratched on the break and from there Peach ran out for 3-3.

A miss from Peach allowed Waleed Majid to take the rack and four balls down off the next break set up another run out for a 5-3 lead. He took the next two to reach the hill at 7-3.

Peach was not quite done though and with a cluster of balls gathered around the corner pocket, Peach put Majid in a tight snooker. With the cue ball completely obscured, the Qatari failed to make contact. With ball in hand Peach did the same again before a third foul won him the frame.
