Three seeds come through in thrillers!

There were three wins for the three seeded players as the 2015 PartyPoker World Pool Masters got underway at the Victoria Warehouse in Manchester on Friday evening. In front of an enthusiastic crowd there were wins for defending champ Shane Van Boening, 2013 victor Niels Feijen and China’s Liu Haitao in the final match of the session.
Liu had faced England’s Karl Boyes who had enjoyed some rowdy support in the arena. It was an absorbing encounter with the most dramatic of endings as Boyes came back from 7-5 down to level the match at 7-7.
The final rack came down to the last two balls as Boyes looked to complete an exhilarating run out for the win. After an array of outstanding shot making, he missed the easiest of 8 balls, a short prod into the top corner pocket. The crowd were stunned and it gifted the match to Liu. The Chinese knocked the hanging 8 ball in and the left himself a long cut on the 9 but pulled it of to move into the quarter finals.
The Chinese star had always led as Boyes struggled to get going but the Englishman stuck with him. When his chance came at the end he took it, up to a point.
“I still feel very excited by the win because Karl Boyes is a great player and the atmosphere was very excitable,” said Liu.

Preview: 2015 GB9 Northern Masters, the Rasson Billiards Pro Cup & Challenge Cup
The annual 10-ball competition on the national calendar returns as the Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Telford stages the GB 9 Ball Tour Northern Masters for the third time.
First staged as a 10-ball competition back in 2012, this competition has been hotly contested every year since becoming a part of the GB9 calendar. The call shot nature of this code meets very well with most if not all players on tour, and as such has since become a firm favourite with both players and fans. Its similarities with 9-ball make the code easy to understand and follow, whilst the elimination of most flukes and lucky shots makes the code even more enjoyable for the purists. We are sure that all competitors will once again give it their all to put their name on the Northern Masters trophy and win one of the biggest 10-ball events on the continent.

Feijen looking a hot favourite for the Tropicana
Niels Feijen took a commanding lead at the top of the European Mosconi Cup ranking list after winning his second Euro Tour title of the year at the weekend.
The Dutchman was MVP at last year’s PartyPoker Mosconi Cup, which saw Europe earn an 11-5 victory over Team USA in front of a record-breaking crowd in Blackpool, England and he had already won the Italian Open on the Euro Tour earlier this year.
His win in the Dynamic Austria Open at the weekend saw him open up a 14-point lead at the top of the Euro Tour ranking list, meaning a quarter-final or better finish on home soil at the Dynamic Dutch Open in October will guarantee him a spot on this year’s European team.
Feijen defeated Petri Makkonen at the quarter-final stage in Austria, meaning the Finnish star was displaced at the top of the rankings. However he remains in second place with European captain Marcus Chamat in third after he too reached the last eight.

King Cassidy Rules at T9B Search For a Star Event
Saturday 1st August saw the annual T9B Search For A Star (Rookie) event take place. 36 players in total competed for the beautiful glass trophy, prize money on the day, a £250 T9B sponsorship deal and an elusive space within the T9B Champion Of Champions Event. The format was 9ball pool with alternate breaks and each match was a race to 7 racks plus handicaps (Max -1 rated players). Each player would compete in three random league stage matches with the top 16 players ranked in order of matches won followed by racks won as a second separator. The league stages sure were going to be cutthroat as the sport of 9ball is itself, as less than 50% of players would qualify, meaning some players with 2 out of 3 wins would miss out based on racks won. The power was in the players hands before a ball was hit as 3/3 wins would guarantee qualification but 2/3 you would be relying on results.
The Annual Search for a Star event always creates a fantastic buzz as without some of Total9ball's top plays involved it's felt this is a massively open event and any player who plays with confidence on the day can be the eventual winner.

Shane turns the screw but it’s wide open for remaining two spots
Shane Van Boening remains the front runner in the 2015 PartyPoker Mosconi Cup Team USA ranking, but the race for the second and third spots on this year’s team for Las Vegas is hotting up.
Van Boening sits top of the pile after the US Open 10-ball and US Open 8-ball tournaments. He has 72 points, twice as many as second-placed Corey Deuel and Skyler Woodward have amassed.
With just Turning Stone and the US Open 9-ball to be played, Van Boening is a hot favourite to make Mark Wilson’s team but could still be displaced from the top three.

Portugal claim the title in the teams
With a nice 2:0 victory over Team Germany in the final, Team Portugal won the Gold Medal in the Seniors Team Division at the 2015 Dynamic Billard European Championships for Seniors and Ladies.
In the semi-final, the Portuguese almost stumbled. In their match against Finalnd, Manuel Pereira took a quick 8:3 victory over Pauli Laaksonen in 9-ball. However, Sami Karttunen turned the scoreboard to 1:1 with his 7:6 victory over Henrique Correia in 10-ball. The decision had to come from the 8-ball match between Marko Hartikainen and Antonio Neves. That match went hill-hill and Neves managed to run the final rack under an incredible amount of pressure to book the seat in the final against the Germans with his team.
