Mark Gray (GBR) won the Dynamic Billard Dutch Open with a 9:6 victory over Nikos Ekonomopoulos (GRE) in the final match of the event.
Gray really had some tough work to do during the last days. He lost his opening match with Karl Boyes (GBR) and had to take the long way over the loser’s round to make it to the final. „I lost to Boyes in the first match and, to be honest, he really thrashed me. In the loser’s qualification round, I had Denis Grabe who won the last two events“, stated Gray after the final, „I never thought I would make it and stand here to day with the trophy“.
Even more spice was added to the match because both players were about equal with the points to make it on the team for this year’s Mosconi Cup. That means that the winner of this match was guaranteed another 10.000,- US$ at least. Nice incentive to win the final match for both players.

ENGLAND are the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool champions after they broke Dutch hearts in a thrilling final rack shoot out where both sides had chances to take one of cue sport’s most prestigious titles. It was England’s first win in the storied history of the event and gives the two players a $60,000 pay day.
Showing the bulldog spirit Karl Boyes and Darren Appleton came from 3-6 down and then 7-9 behind to force a final rack decider at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth in front of a sell-out crowd.
It was Appleton who broke the last rack of the match, but he could only recoil in horror as the cue ball scratched into the centre pocket.
With ball in hand, Niels Feijen and Nick Van den Berg were big favourites to take the title but with just two balls on the table, it all went wrong. Feijen missed the 8 ball trying to force a better position for the 9.
Boyes came to the table with a table length shot at the 8 but jawed it as the crowd gasped. It rolled behind the 9 which was lying on the rail and when Van den Berg’s bank shot left the 8 out in the open, it was game over.
Appleton said, “I am in shock. The match was really crazy with a lot of mistakes from both teams. We made a silly one in rack two and after that we couldn’t get anything going.
“Holland let us off the hook really and they are going to be sick to lose because they had a great chance to win there. But that is why 9 ball is the most exciting game in the world, because you just never know. And the pressure was just unbelievable.

LAST YEAR’S runners-up Holland will get a shot at redemption on Sunday evening when they face England A in the final of the 2014 Betway World Cup of Pool at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth after both teams came through their semi-final matches against European opposition.
Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes got the better of 2012 champions Finland – Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen - who faltered after a good start. They lead 3-1 and 4-3 before England took the next three to lead 6-4.
Despite the Finns coming back at them, they never lost that lead and ran out comfortable 9-6 winners.
Commented Appleton, “It is a little bit of an advantage to be the home nation; a lot of guys have travelled from around the world but we just had to drive down the road. We feel comfortable here which helps and the crowd is on our side.
“That was our best match so far, we played pretty solid and we are really happy to get to the final. The levels here are high and Finland break so well; I have never seen anybody break so well as Petri Makkonen. You think they are capable of running the match out and it puts pressure on your break. “
Boyes added, “Our last match against USA helped because we were 7-2 up, had the lead, and they came back to 7-7 and we knocked two finishes in.
“We lost the lag today and could have been 3-0 down but Mika missed a shot and we hung in there, and then played really well.”

Gokhul’s The Man At T9B Amateur Series Event 9
The Total9Ball Amateur Series 2014 drew a step closer to it's conclusion yesterday (27/09/2014) with Event 9 of the UK’s biggest Amateur Series. This season, like the four previous seasons of this prestigious series, has been a cracker. St Albans Hurricane Room in Hertfordshire again were the host for the penultimate event of the 2014 campaign.
This event kicked off at 10.30am and the air was full of ambition as all players within the venue were desperate to produce their ‘A’ game and take down this event. Ramesh Gokhul had mixed emotions after his first round matches on both sides of the draw as an impressive 7v3 result against Tony Burton was followed by a 7v3 defeat at the hands of talented Jed Thompson. Phil Wildman setup a second round clash with Ramesh ‘Danny’ Gokhul by beating Mikko Tuomi 7v4. Paul Taylor got the better of Phil Wildman in the second side of the draw; Paul got off to an explosive start leading 6v1, Phil fought back gallantly to 6v5 but eventually Paul crossed the winning line with the end result being 7v5. Richard Twomey started the event in the best possible way dropping just 1 rack over his first two matches as he annihilated Ashik Nathwani 7v0 and Jaspal Bamotra 7v1. Panos Roules also began the event brilliantly with 7v2 and 7v1 winning score lines against Rick Collett and Veslin Papradanov respectively. Del Sim was pushed all the way by Jed Thompson but it was Del who converted the winning rack at hill-hill (6v6) to prevail.
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

THERE IS certain to be a European winner of the ninth annual Betway World Cup of Pool as England A – Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes – put paid to Team USA in a tense quarter-final encounter at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.
The momentum ebbed and flowed as the English duo coasted into a 7-2 lead as the American pairing of Earl Strickland and Shane Van Boening looked patchy as they struggled to find a rhythm. That soon changed as the English grip on the match slipped away and at 7-7 the match was anyone’s.
A dry break from Shane Van Boening though halted the USA’s ascendancy and the English ran out to get to the hill and then broke and ran the last for a great win and a semi-final berth against Finland.
Appleton: “We made a dream start to get to 7-2 and the game was a bit too easy for us; we were controlling the cue ball really well, we kept them off the table really, we didn’t have anything difficult to do, and at 7-2 I was thinking we were winning easily without having to do much.
“At 7-2 Karl missed a tough bank on the 2 ball and it is 7-3, then they get lucky in the next rack where they missed a ball but got safe. It happened again the next rack and I am starting to think it is a twist and something was going to happen."

Click the image to view the full size photograph - use "back" to return here. Finland 9-7 Philippines Europe 2, Asia 0 as Finns and Austrians make semis
2012 champions Finland fought back from 4-2 and 7-5 down to knock defending champions Philippines out of the Betway World Cup of Pool at the quarter-final stage with a 9-7 victory at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.
The match was a story of supreme shot making from both sides but it was Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen who made it to Sunday’s semi-finals, where they join an Austrian side who shocked China in a 9-3 victory.
At 7-7 Dennis Orcollo tried a tough jump to pocket the one but cannoned the cue ball into the seven and gave Finland ball in hand. From there Finland reached the hill and didn’t allow Philippines back to the table as they booked a semi-final against either England A or USA, who face off tonight.
“It was a nail-biter and we were hanging in there by the skin of our teeth,” admitted Immonen. “We somehow got ourselves over the finish line in the end.
“We played perfect position in the final rack. Makkonen is breaking the best of anybody in the tournament. I have figured the break out and we are both breaking well now, which is a good sign for tomorrow.
Makkonen added: “It is easy to play when you have a good partner, good atmosphere and a good table. If we play our own game it doesn’t matter who we play, so I don’t mind if it is England A or USA.”

Click the image to view the full size photograph - use "back" to return here. England A 7-1 Greece Germany by a whisker as China and England A coast
England A set up a quarter-final clash with old rivals USA by dispatching Greece 7-1 on an evening which also saw China give England B no chances in a 7-0 win. Earlier Canada had gifted Germany victory as the final round two fixtures played out at the Betway World Cup of Pool at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth.
Before the tournament Karl Boyes said he would love the chance to ‘shut Earl Strickland up’, after the pair had a fiery Mosconi Cup singles match in Las Vegas last year. Boyes and his team-mate Darren Appleton booked their match against USA with a confident 7-1 victory over Greece.
Nikos Ekonomopoulos and Alexander Kazakis were sloppy early on but as England A gained momentum the only further chance Greece were allowed came in the sixth rack when Appleton scratched. They took the chance to make the score 5-1 but Kazakis’ subsequent illegal break handed control back to England A, who pounced to reach the hill and then take the match in the following rack.
“We are looking forward to the match with USA now,” said Appleton. “It was in the back of our minds but we weren’t going to look past Greece because they are a great team.
“They didn’t play at their best tonight and we were solid. We broke better tonight and just need to get a better feel of the table now.
“We are here to try and win the tournament and we knew if we beat Greece we would play America. The Ryder Cup is on right now and we really wanted that match. We look forward to beating them tomorrow.”
Boyes added: “They had a couple of chances at the start of the match but the table caught them out. Darren has adapted brilliantly and played two good matches, he was flawless tonight.
“We didn’t break too well in the first match but we have put a lot of hours in since then and figured something out.”
