Now, the fun begins.
After three days of round robin group play, in which 25 teams from all over the globe dueled in a veritable cavalcade of 8-ball, 9-ball and 10-ball, the 2014 World Pool Team Championship has been whittled down to the Final 16.
All matches from here through Saturday will be single elimination, and you can bet your last Chinese Yuan that the tension and drama levels inside the Tongzhou Lhue High School arena in Beijing will be thick and hot. For not only are the teams playing for $300,000 in prize money-with $80,000 going to the winning side— they are also competing for national pride. There’s something about wearing your country’s flag and having the backing and support of your fellow countrymen and teammates that takes this sport to a whole other dimension.
Leading the way in terms of support will be both China sides, both of whom completely waltzed through their group unscathed all week. But while the Chinese squads are certainly formidable on paper, they both have had absolutely no competition in their groups.
Each China side had what could be considered the easiest draws in the event. Now, however, that will all change. And while China 1—with Li He Wen, Wu Jiaqing, Chu Bing Chia, Han Yu, and Chen Siming-- and China 2—with Liu Haitao, Dang Ching Hu, Wang Can, Fu Xiaofang, and Liu Shasha-- will probably advance at least to the quarters and perhaps further, it all comes with a caveat that other teams won’t have to deal with. The pressure from the home fans placed on both China teams will be massive.

The penultimate round of this season’s GB 9 Ball Tour hits town this weekend as the Southern Masters is contested at the Daventry Court Hotel in Northamptonshire.
As the 7th GB9 season draws ever closer to its climax, the fourth event of 2014 brings together once again some of the country’s finest cueists as they lock horns to see who will take home the next major British title. Having already gone past the halfway stage of this 2014 season, it’s fair to say that the dominance of Phil Burford and Mark Gray at the top of the rankings will take quite some stopping at this event. With 3rd placed Daryl Peach flying the flag for Great Britain at the WPA World Team Championship alongside Karl Boyes, Chris Melling and Allison Fisher, it will take nothing short of a tournament win for any of the chasing pack to close that gap. With some of the country’s leading amateur’s at the head of that pack including reigning Midlands Classic champion Chris Hall, Michael Rhodes, Craig Osborne and Darryn Walker, all of the top players will have to be on their toes. It remains to see whether any of those four, or any of the other exciting amateurs in the field, can stop Burford and Gray on their quest for yet more silverware.
The magnificent Daventry Court Hotel will host its 14th GB9 event to date, a run which stretches all the way back to the 2010 British Grand Prix. It has proven itself over the years to be a very popular venue with players, officials and all those involved with the GB 9 Ball Tour. The tour is also due to close the season out at the hotel with this year’s British Grand Prix between November 7th and 9th. We are sure that this event will be as smooth and enjoyable as those previous, and GB9 would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the hotel and its staff for their tireless work to date in making tour events so memorable.

All photography courtesy of ©Tai Chengzhe/China Foto Press Ina Kaplan proves to be the perfect team player as she helps seal Germany's hard fought win against Austria on Day 2 at the 2014 World Pool Team Championship in Beijing
Ina Kaplan doesn’t have the big time experience, the world titles, nor the time logged in under the pressurized glare of the TV spotlights that some of the greats of the women’s game have. But the 27 year old from Siegen, Germany can, when she’s on her game, certainly hold her own on the pool table against any opponent. Her Euro tour win in late 2013 and her runner up finish in this year’s European Championships attest to some solid cueing talent.
Playing for Team Germany this week in the 2014 World Pool Team Championship here in Beijing alongside greats Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann, and fellow teammate Sebastian Staab, Kaplan would best be described as a role player. You don’t count on her to regularly whip the likes of Fu Xiaofang, Liu Shasha, Allison Fisher, Han Yu or Ga Young Kim. You need Kaplan to come through for the team where and when she can. And that’s exactly what she did on Day 2 today for Germany.
For their first match in the group stages of this year’s World Team Championship, Germany found themselves against one of the event’s toughest squads, Austria. Group C is pool’s equivalent of the “Group of Death,” with Germany, Austria and Great Britain all fighting to advance to the knockout stage. A win early on was vital for both team’s chances.

he BWPPA held its 3rd event of the 2014 season on the 19th/20th July with the Talisman British 10-ball Championships held at the BWPPA/BWCSA Wheelchair Cue Sport Academy at Stoke Mandeville, this event is named after one of our main tour sponsors.
We had a record turn out with 22 players entering the event, including Aleksandr Prokopiev who again made the 7,000 mile trip from Yakusa, Russia. We welcomed back Darren Staddon after a 5 year absence, and welcomed 2 new players to the tour, Dave Beaumont and Chris Brown, and it would be the recently crowned English Pool 8-Ball World Wheelchair Champion Beaumont who had a fantastic first event, just missing out on the top prize.
We also again had the pleasure of the company of Big Dave Knight and his traveling Pro9 shop, many thanks to Dave for attending and also for his ongoing support for the tour. See www.pro9.co.uk for further information.
During the event all the players signed a card to be sent to tour patron Dynamite Darren Appleton and his bride to be Angie Tran, to celebrate their upcoming wedding.

It's that time of the year again when we find out who is going to be the T9B UK Amateur 10-Ball champion of 2014. From the successful Switch Tournaments and popular demand, this should be a great event for 10-Ball, the game of no luck!!
We are now half way through 2014 and again it has so far been a massive success, with new sponsors on board enhancing opportunities for Total9Ball players.
The UK 10-Ball Championship looks to be a cracker. Mark Parker and Phil Wildman have been working very hard behind the scenes to provide you the players with tournaments that YOU want! We do try to cater for everyone. 9-Ball, 10-Ball, Handicaps, No Handicaps, Low Entry Fee, High Entry Fee, Pros, Amateurs, Rookies and the best value overall without a doubt is the 2x Double Chance format, where you can get into the prize money twice!!! This can enable you to have a chance to take over 10x your entry fee!
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Total9Ball was back at the St Albans Hurricane Room this weekend for the 7th edition of the ten event Amateur Series. 27 players made the trip through the rain to Hertfordshire on Saturday 19th July 2014. Again there was an extremely strong field of players battling for the T9B glassware. It was very hard to pick a favourite for the event with Courtney Symons, Del Sim, Dave Evans, Elliott Sanderson, Mark Parker, Martin Correira, Neil Margossian, Phil Wildman, Tom Staveley and Zoltan Kojsza in the field of players. It was also great to see pool champions from years ago Ant Ginn and Gareth Esprit in attendance and in the mix for the title.
Matches began at 10.30, as usual all players were given two chances in this event. If a player was to remain unbeaten throughout the event the jackpot of £660 would be won.
Phil Wildman's day began very well with two 7v4 victories against Neil Margossian and new player to Total9Ball Jason Rosser. Brian Cassidy appeared to be in good form, a 7v1 result against Total9Ball's most successful player Courtney Symons and a 7v3 scoreline against Darian George proved that. The current T9B rankings leader Dave Evans also made the perfect start with two wins, the first over Wayne Rooke 7v2, Dave was however pushed all the way in his second match as he battled hard to a 7v6 win over Neil Margossian. Del Sim dropped just 5 racks across his two first round matches against Ken Ng and Zoltan Kojsza as he advanced to the last 32. Mark Hughes also recorded two win results against Panios Roules 7v3 and Shakz Islam 7v6.
Thanks to Dynamic Billard for sponsoring this event.

Pin-Yi Ko wins CSI Invitational 10-Ball Championship
Pin-Yi Ko defeated his younger brother Ping-Ching Ko 11-9 in an all Taiwanese final to win the CSI Invitational 10-Ball Championship on Sunday night at the Rio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The first order of business for Sunday was to determine the final two players who would join Pin-Yi Ko and Dennis Orcollo in the single elimination bracket. Both groups C & D held three players who could figure into the decision as to who would win the group.
Group C could have gone to a three way tie if Efren Reyes defeated Ralf Souquet. Souquet did away with that thought quickly when he took a quick 5-0 lead over the Magician. Reyes at least made the match competitive, but Souquet won the match 9-4 to leave the Ping-Chung Ko/John Morra match to determine the group winner. That match was a tight one. Morra held an early 4-1 lead, but the younger of the Ko brothers fought back and took the lead at 7-6. Morra was running out to tie the score at 7-7 when he missed a 10-ball and that was the beginning of the end for the young Canadian star. Ko won the match 9-7 and joined his brother in the single elimination bracket.

Friday August 15th, Thurston Rotterdam will open its doors for the 6th edition of the Longoni Benelux Open, with the annual €10.000 guaranteed prize fund.
Participants from all over Europe will venture to Rotterdam for a spectacular long weekend of 10ball. No less than six world champions will show their skills on the baize: freshly crowned Niels ‘The Terminator’ Feijen, Hall-of-Famer ‘The Kaiser’ Ralf Souquet, Daryl Peach, Karl Boyes, Stephan Cohen, Huidji See and who knows which ‘big guns’ will still show up.
The event offers something for everybody, pros, advanced amateurs and beginners. Better yet, this is your chance to play against a pro. Every participant can re-enlist, should he or she be eliminated from a qualification round. There is prize money for the pros and even a bonus for the best lady and the best junior of the event. Since there are already 17 ladies on the entry list, we have decided to organise the Ladies Side Event.
Apart from the event itself, world port Rotterdam offers plenty of waterfront sightseeing, good food, terraces, shopping and a vibrant nightlife. So, make a city trip to Rotterdam for the 2014 Longoni Benelux Open. It’s a win/ win situation.
