The cracking trophy on offer at the T9B National Series - Event 2

The Wealdstone Of Oz

The 16th of March saw Total9ball’s The National Undefeated Series head to the country's capital with Event Two being held in Wealdstone Riley’s, London. There were some great talents on show including Craig Osborne, Imran Majid, Kev Uzzell, Mark Gray and Richard Jones to name a few. It was an early start for tournament director Nicole Hansen and myself setting off from Reading at 7am.

Matches began at 10.30am after the draw was completed by Paul McMichael, was today going to be the day that we got our first Undefeated player? All players knew the task ahead... Win 8 straight matches to collect the Winners and Runners Up prize money plus the ‘The Undefeated Jackpot’ totaling £850, which is a nice day's work by anybody’s standards.

Paul, who completed the draw, pitted friends against each other as early as the first round drawing Courtney Symons against traveling companion Finlay Laing and Richard Jones against Mark Gray. Courtney and Mark both booked their places in the second round with convincing wins. T9B National Series Event 1 Winner Craig Osborne began his defence against Jermaine Pierre, Craig looked as focused as ever winning 7-1 and you could tell he was in Wealdstone to get the job done and take the beautiful Total9ball glass trophy home along with a large chunk of the Prize money but would it be the Jackpot?

Fisher beats Ouschan in all-European Amway Cup final

A thrilling end game to the 13th edition of the Amway eSpring Women's World 9 Ball Open featured two of Europe's finest players, as Britain's Kelly Fisher and Jasmin Ouschan from Austria fought their way to the ultimate match in the premier Taiwanese tournament of the year.

This was Jasmin's second Amway Cup final match in two years running, but once again she failed to take the top spot, as she was narrowly beaten 11:8 by fellow European Kelly Fisher - who was a Quarter-Finalist last year.

Both players handed out severe thrashings to the opposition along the way - Ouschan handed out 7:4, 9:6, and 9:5 beatings in her last 16 matches onwards, while an obviously in-form Fisher absolutely hammered her opponents 7:2, 9:2, and 9:4.

WPA Sets World Championships in Dubai, Oslo, Shenyang and Doha for 2013

For pool fans around the globe, the wait for championship action is almost over.

After a quiet first third of the year, the World Pool and Billiard Association(WPA) can finally announce its schedule of World Championships and other big time ranking events for 2013.

The World 8-ball Championship returns to the United Arab Emirates, but this year for the first time ever, the tournament will be held in the cosmopolitan global city of Dubai from May 6-11. 128 of the best male players from over 50 countries are expected to gather at Dubai’s World Trade Center to fight for the $200,000 prize fund.

The World 8-ball Championship has been contested just seven times in pool history and all seven events were held in the Emirate of Fujairah. The World 8-ball Championship always brings out the best of the best and a look at the roster of champions over the years is testament to that fact. Past winners include the legend Efren Reyes(2004), Wu Chia Ching(2005), Ronnie Alcano(2007), Ralf Souquet(2008 ), Karl Boyes(2010), Dennis Orcollo(2011). The defending champion is Chinese Taipei’s Chang Jung Lin.

Soon after the 8-ball party in Dubai, the center of the pool universe moves to Shanghai for the always popular China Open to be held May 12-19. 64 men and 48 women will be competing in separate events that, as usual, are sure to provide a stern and nervy test to any player looking to grab a spot on the podium. The prize fund and venue for the China Open have yet to be released but this annual gathering of pool’s best men and women will surely offer one of the biggest paydays of the year in the sport.

IPA British Open Pool Tournaments - Review

I think it would be fair to say that despite the hundreds of hours put in by the IPA committee and other players as well as outside sources, there was a lingering hint of trepidation heading in to the first event of the 2013 tour – had they made the correct decision in switching to blackball rules, would it go down well with the players, and perhaps even more importantly, would it be popular with the thousands watching via the live stream – a bit like sitting outside in the dentist waiting room worried about what will happen next?

As it turns out (like most dental appointments), there was nothing to worry about whatsoever, and the weekend was a resounding success and step one on the path to the publicity such a popular sport (and its top players) actually deserve. Seventeen tables were set up in the one huge room at the Blackpool Hilton which made for an amazing atmosphere, and with an Amateur and an Open tournament going on, there was action wherever you looked and of the very highest standard. Household names such as Phil Harrison, Adam Davis, Gareth Potts, and Jason Twist were all in action, some trying these rules for the first time in such a prestigious competition.

With entries from around the World including a strong presence from France, Malta, and the number one player from South Africa, the entry list was more cosmopolitan than normal (which we see as a good thing), and with a strong line up of seasoned blackball players joining those from the old “World rules” IPA tour of 2012, we all looked forward to seeing who exactly would come out on top. With frame by frame scoring both on line and on twitter plus regular updates via Facebook, as well as a quality livestream, pool fans the world over tuned in (literally) to watch the action, and from the feedback received, we know they weren’t disappointed with the more attacking and open blackball style.

2013 Total 9 Ball Rookie Rampage Champion - Sunesh Garib

Garib on a Rampage in The Hurricane Room St Albans

Saturday 2nd March 2013 was the date for this year's edition of the T9B Rookie Rampage. The Rookie Rampage was first held in 2012 and was won by Mark Singleton, 34 players were looking to follow in his footsteps this year but there could only be one winner. The T9B created Double Chance format was used for this event and again it showed why this is the most exciting format in the UK right now. All players were entered in the draw twice and at 10am when the matches kicked off there was one thought on each player's mind... Could I be the first Double Champion and scoop the Jackpot prize of £480. Players had a nice surprise on arrival as all tables were equipped with an Ultimate Breakmaster, a set of Aramith match balls and new scoreboards, all of this equipment is now supplied by Total9ball.

The Draw was completed by T9B tournament director Nicole Hansen and the first round offered some quality matches. The pick of the matches in my opinion was Tom Staveley v Sunny Garib. Tom a committed player to T9B events who has attended 30 out of the 35 events run and Sunny who is a relatively new player. Tom used his tournament experience and ran out a 7-3 winner, it was clear though from comments made by Tom after the match that Sunny was a good cueist who will be a top player.

First Euro-Tour victory for the Russian

In an intense match, Russian Konstantin Stepanov defeated Dimitri Jungo (SUI) with 9:7 and obtained the crown of the 2013 Dynamic Billard Italian Open.

In the early stage of the match, everything was all square. It was Jungo who managed to get an advantage over Stepanov first. After trailing 3:4, Jungo won 3 straight racks and took a 6:4 lead over Stepanov. That phase of the match was determined by several unforced errors from both players. However, Stepanov recovered and came back with a 7:6 lead over Jungo. It was obvious that both players were struggling with their game.

Jungo managed to tie the match at 7:7, but then Stepanov benefited from a mistake of the Swiss and got on the hill with 8:7. In the 16th rack, the pressure was too much for Jungo. He played a weak safety and Stepanov cleared the table to achieve his first Euro-Tour victory of his career.

"I am so happy", stated Stepanov after the final. "I've been playing the Euro-Tour for many years now and I have never been able to win one. Today is my day!" says Stepanov with a smile on his face. "My goal for this year is to get a spot in the Top Ten of the Euro-Tour rankings and to go to the World
Championships this year."

EVENT REPORT: 2013 GB9 MIDLANDS CLASSIC

The sixth season of the GB 9 Ball Tour has kicked off with a bigger bang than ever before, with Great Britain’s Phil Burford overcoming Germany’s Ralf Souquet in the final of this year’s Midland Classic.

It was apparent both before and during the competition weekend that this is to be a very different tour from last season. Dozens of players from previous years and within British shores have renewed their affiliation with the tour, but that’s about all that remains the same. Representatives from Germany, Italy, Spain and Denmark to name but a few have all come over to Great Britain to sample the tour for themselves, and it’s fair to say they’ll be taking many happy memories from their first experience of GB9 back home with them. The tournament has also been held for the first time in the magnificent Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Telford, Shropshire – a venue well situated for many of the tours’ regulars and connected well to major airports. The main event has transformed into the more conventional double elimination format in the main event with a Challenge Cup event being held for those players not making the money stages in the main event. The players are now no longer competing for medals to take home with them. Instead, each event will have a permanent trophy for the players to try and get their names on along with a beautiful salver for both finalists of the main event along with the winner of each tournament’s Challenge Cup event. All in all, the tour has taken on a new and refreshing structure which it is hoped appeals to past and present players, young and old players and, most importantly, both professional and amateur competitors looking for the best challenge possible.

Final amendments being made as players start pouring in

The Best Western Premier BHR Treviso Hotel is probably the busiest place in Quinto di Treviso today.

Taking a look around the place, the first impression comes with the check-in desk. Having been there quite often during today, I have not seen the staff having a quiet minute so far. Pool-Billiard players from all over Europe keep on pouring in, having travelled thousands of miles by airplane, car or train. Of course, that is not too much of a surprise since the contestant‘s rows for the Dynamic Billiards Italian Open has always attracted many players. However, it is always amazing to see so many talented cue artists in one place, look at them and think: "Who will be taking the trophy home this time?“ The range of players who have signed up for the event is long.

It ranges from young and new faces such as 18-year old Tobias Bongers (GER) to mature and experienced players like Aristeidis Damoulakis (GRE). Regulars like Nick v.d. Berg (NED) could be spotted as well as Evgenyi Stalev (RUS), a player who was last seen in the European billiard circuit about ten years ago.

Even former World Champion Stephan Cohen (nothing) will start the battle in tomorrow's first round after being absent for quite some tournaments now. As a highlight, even three female players complete the variety of the field.
