 | Heartbreaks & Triumph for Liu at Women's World 10-Ball Heats! |
Stage 1 of Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship Robinsons Galleria EDSA cor. Ortigas Avenue Quezon City Philippines www.RobinsonsMalls.com www.womensworld10ball.com - facebook www.DragonPromotions.com
Saturday 18 August 2012
Taiwan's Shin Mei Liu had a soul testing 2 days at the Qualifiers in Manila. Japan Redeems
Manila, Philippines- Japan finally ended it's dry streak of 3 qualifiers where none of its 8 members scoring a single spot into the Yalin Women's World 10-Ball Championship. In the final qualifier, both Kimura Maki and Junko Tsuchiya defeated their foreign foes to take the final 2 spots into the main stage of the World Championship. However there was one final sudden death qualifier held due to the unexpected cancellation of one of the main event's entrants. This proved to be the saving grace for one special player at the end of the late night.
The most dramatic moment of the World Championship so far took place in the final match between Japan's Tsuchiya and Taiwan's former 2x World Champion Shin Mei Liu. Liu had played in 3 qualifying heats already and lost in 2 finals. This was now her 3rd finals. Tsuchiya was the underdog but leapt to an amazing 5-0 lead in the race to 7 games. Even more incredibly, Liu broke and ran 6 consecutive racks to take the lead back 6-5. Somehow Tsuchiya managed to tie the match at 6-6 pushing it to a nailbiting final game. With needing only the final 3 balls on the table, Liu seemingly had it in the bag when she abruptly missed an easy 8-Ball. Looking doomed, Liu sat down while Tsuchiya seemed to have the case game when she made the 8-Ball and then left herself out of position on the 9-ball. She missed the 9-ball and a ray of hope came to Liu. Liu had no offensive shot, so she opted for a safety behind the 10-ball which was laying perfect for that shot. She made a great safety, but unexpectedly she accidentally made the 9-ball! Because she did not call the pocket intended, the inning ended and Tsuchiya was given another turn and she was left with a very easy 10-ball for the win. Heartbreak!

Team Portugal: Paolo Costa, Manuel Pereira, & Henrique Correia (l.t.r.) Foto: EPBF/DK Championships end with a Portuguese victory
Saturday, 11 August 2012: Team Portugal won the final match over Team Germany with 3:0.
The final was a worthy end of a long week of senior’s pool billiards. Henrique Correia confirmed his top status and hammered Christophe Creter in 10-ball 7:0. That gave a huge advantage to team Portugal, since the other two German contestants were lighting in their respective matches at the time. Manuel Pereira was leading 7:5 over Frank Willner in 9-ball with 7:5 when the 8-ball match with Paolo Costa and Reiner Wirsbitzki went hill-hill at 6:6. This time, Lady Luck was more on the side of the Portuguese team. Paolo Costa pocketed the 8-ball on the break. It was respotted and he was allowed to continue shooting. He had a nice layout ad ran the rack and snatched the final Gold Medal this week for his team. As a little consolation, Team Germany has won the overall rankings by far.

The 4th edition of the Longoni Benelux Open drew a record breaking number of entries, no less than 181 (168, last year). The level of play was unsurpassed with the attendance of world class players taking a shot at the coveted Longoni Cup: defending champion Mark Gray (England), Longoni player representative and two-time runner-up Niels ‘The Terminator’ Feijen (the Netherlands), ‘The Tornado’ Tony Drago (Malta), former champions Serge Das (Belgium) and Andreas Roschkowsky (Germany), as well as multiple Euro Tour champions ‘The Maharaja’ Imran Majid (England) and ‘El Niño’ Nick van den Berg (the Netherlands) to name but a few.
Participants from all over Europe travelled to billiards club De Loft in the historic city of Leuven, locals from Belgium, neighboring countries Luxembourg, the Netherlands, France, Germany and as far as Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Spain and Romania. A few Filipinos residing in Europe were also drawn to the event like magnets.
Two days of qualifiers produced the final 32 top guns to play in the main event, double knock-out (race to 7) until the quarter finals and single elimination (race to 8 ) onwards, in alternate break format.
An early double hiller thriller saw Euro Tour champion Richard ‘Indiana’ Jones (England) eliminated by 2009 champion Andreas Roschkowsky in the first round of the one loss side. Hill-hill matches sent ‘The Tornado’ and ‘El Niño’ to the one loss side, respectively ‘terminated’ by Niels Feijen and the surprise outsider Kervin Chellen (France), nevertheless, the reigning French 8ball champion. Drago never made it to the quarter finals as he was eliminated by reigning German premier league champion Lars Kuckherm, Feijen’s teammate.

Queens, New York- Europe's dominance of straight pool has ended. John Schmidt of Hesperia, California put USA back on top again in the 100th anniversary tournament of the game. A fitting end for the oldest pool tournament in the world. To do so, Schmidt had to defeat a field of international superstars whom most put well ahead of Schmidt as favorites. Undeterred by critics, Schmidt proved to the world America still has game.
