APPLETON BEATS OHI, LEE TAKES DOWN SOUQUET TO SET UP FINALS CLASH IN DOHA
After clocking in workmanlike performances, Englands Darren Appleton and Chinas Lee He Wen have advanced to the final of the 2012 WPA World Pool Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The two will face each other in a race to 13, alternate break final which will begin at 6pm Doha time,(GMT +3). The winner will receive $40,000 while the runner up will take home $20,000.
As he has all week, Appleton put in an all around solid showing in his match against Japans Naoyuki Ohi. Ohi had come into the final playing perhaps the slickest pool out of all 128 player in the field. The 29 year old from Osaka had been dealt a very tough draw and performed brilliantly in each match.
While Appleton had been playing his usual solid pool, he also got very fortunate in the round of 32, when he barely escaped against New Zealand upstart, Matthew Edwards, 11-10, when Edwards inexplicably left an open table in the final rack.
But anyone who knows pool at the championship level knows that often times the eventual champion has had miracle escapes somewhere along the way to the crown.
Appleton didnt leave anything to chance in his match with Ohi. The two played the first four racks perfectly, each breaking and running the balls twice. Ohi took the lead in the next frame but that was the last he saw of the lead.
Appleton caught Ohi at 4 then pulled a two prong strategy to take the match home; he stepped on the gas and he also kept his mistakes to the bare minimum. As usual the Englishman didnt do anything flashy. He just took advantage of a handful of mistakes from Ohi, and didnt take any chances when faced with shots that werent a sure thing. He won the match 11-7.
I played solid, Appleton said right after the match. I didnt do anything stupid. I only made one or two mistakes in the whole match and he made a bunch of mistakes. I had no luck after the break either. But I think my experience was the key. He was sitting right next to me and I could hear that he was breathing heavy. Thats my cue to just keep the pressure on. Thats when I keep my foot on his throat. I make sure not to give away any easy racks. If I have a 50/50 shot Ill just play safe.
Appleton is now in a position to put his stamp upon the pool world and create a bit of history. He already owns the 2009 World 10-ball title, and he is the current US Open Champion, a title he has now won two years in a row. Winning the World 9-ball crown would surely put him into the pantheon of all time greats. Thats why he has no plans on letting off on the pressure.
Somebody has got to play very tough to beat me.
That somebody who will surely give Appleton all he can deal with will be Chinas Lee He Wen, who beat Germanys great Ralf Souquet in the other semi-final, 11-6 . The 31 year old from Shenyang in Northeastern China often plays like a machine, just quietly and nonchalantly going about his business on the table, and seemingly unflappable.

APPLETON, OHI, LEE AND SOUQUET REACH THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN DOHA
After a brutally taxing day of championship pool at the highest levels, Englands Darren Appleton, Japans Nayoki Ohi, Germanys Ralf Souquet and Chinas Lee He Wen all made it into the semi-finals of the 2012 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar.
Both semi-finals carry the classic story line of east vs. west. In one semi-final, Appleton will face off with Ohi. In the other semi-final, Souquet will be take on Li.
The semi-finals will be a race to 11, alternate break and will be played concurrently at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, beginning at 2pm local time(GMT +3). The final will be a race to 13, alternate break and will begin at 6pm.
The Al Sadd heaved with drama and emotion throughout the long day of play today as the field was cut from 32 players down to four. It was a marathon of hard core pool that when combined with the gravity of the circumstances, seemed to tax each and every player to the core. At times the winners of matches came down to a matter of who had the stamina and will power to withstand the constant pressure. Nobody who was there would argue that the last four men standing earned their spots the hard way and are battle hardened and ready for trench warfare.

AFTER CUTTING THE FIELD IN HALF, IMMONEN AND 31 OTHERS GEAR UP FOR A FRANTIC RIDE TO THE WIRE AT THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
In a long day of hard core pool and tense drama, the grind that is the toughest pool competition in the world kicked into high gear on Wednesday as the unforgiving single elimination knockout rounds commenced at the 2012 World 9-ball Championship .
The day started with 64 players eyeing the ultimate prize of world supremacy in 9-ball, and ended with 32 of them happy and relieved to play another day, and the other 32 seriously considering a long lonely walk into the Qatari desert.
Some of the scripts played out as expected, while others offered fans twists and turns right up to the last ball.
With 13 players in the final 64, the Philippines had the most to lose and indeed thats exactly what happened as 8 Pinoys, including 2010 World 9-ball Champion Francisco Bustamante and 2006 champion Ronnie Alcano, went down to defeat. But Pinoy pool fanatics can take heart; the legend Efren Reyes is still kicking, as is the countrys current top player, Dennis Orcullo.
Continuing with a macro view of the championship landscape, Germany put in an all around solid performance today, as did the Chinese. But out of all the countries, the Taiwanese are looking like the team to beat this year.
Based upon some of the upstart performances in the group stages, the morning session with 8 tables in action offered good possibilities for a few upsets, but instead it became a confirmation of that age old phrase, the cream rises to the top.
Germanys Ralf Souquet, Taiwans Fu Che We and the Netherlands Nick van den Berg all beat back pretenders to the crown. As did the Philippines Orcullo, who took a measure of revenge against Hong Kongs Andrew Kong, who had beaten the Filipino in the group stages.
The pressure is very big here, Orcullo admitted after his match. You just have to deal with it because its only going to get bigger.

Derbys Jack Whelan, currently no 17 on the Amateur IPA rankings, wins all three possible titles at the recent Golden 8 Ball Blackball weekend from 14th to 17th June at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool.
In a remarkable display of skilfulness and aptitude, he became the unstoppable machine, defeating some incredibly talented players to take the Mens Trophy and helping to take the Team Trophy and Mixed Doubles Trophy, at what is fast becoming one of the hottest events on the pool calendar. With 55 teams in attendance, the tournament has almost doubled in size from its debut last year and attracted a mix of players from Blackball, EPA and IPA organisations. Judging by the cascade of positive feedback on the Facebook group, the tournament is expected to grow further in 2013.

A RECORD FOUR KUWAITIS MAKE THE CUT AS THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS INTO THE KNOCKOUT STAGE
Judgment Day at the 2012 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar lived up to expectations as the pool gods passed down plenty of surprising verdicts and left us with a final 64 that promises an all-time classic shootout for pools biggest prize.
Pool fans around the globe can now look forward to three solid days of one intriguing match after the next, as the road to the world title picks up a massive head of steam. All the matches now become a race to 11, alternate break. The semi-finals and final will take place on June 29th, with the final being a race to 13.
Not surprisingly, the Philippines brings the largest contingent into the single elimination stage, with a power house lineup of 13 players out of their 17 original entries having qualified. Taiwan has put in its usual impressive performance with seven of its players having gone through. Japan has looked extremely strong so far and six players in the final 64 are a testament to a high grade effort on the table for the Japanese.
Two surprising developments so far point to a massive shift in the global pool landscape. The USA will have no representation in the final 64 of the World 9-ball Championship, while the tiny country of Kuwait will have four players competing for glory.
Indeed the pool world seemed to be turned upside down from the opening rack inside the cool confines of the Al Sadd Sports Club on Tuesday as a handful of big names were given their walking papers straight away.
Englands Chris Melling was surely on nearly everyones list as one of a handful of guys youd expect to see go deep into this tournament. But after losing to the Philippines underrated Jundel Mazon on Day 1, Melling had to face another rising prospect in Nikolaos Malaj from Albania in a make or break match.

32 PLAYERS ADVANCE TO THE KNOCKOUT STAGE AS CLIFFHANGERS ABOUND AT THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN QATAR
There was something special in the air throughout the day today at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, and it wasnt the crisp cool air conditioning offering comfort to fans and players alike.
It was an intangible, what we used to call on the east coast of the USA, that certain something, an unknowable, hard to describe feeling, when you know something is good, but you cant quite figure out why. You just know its good, and its only going to get better. You just know it.
Perhaps it was the sheer volume of high quality and tight matches that took place, the incredible talent on display that is as good as has ever been seen in pool, all combined with the fact that on Day 3 of the 2012 World 9-balll Championship, the gravity of the moment, of the stakes involved, started to dawn on players and fans alike.
This part of the tournament is all about getting through to the next round. 32 players did just that today as they cashed in their chips to the next stage, the single elimination knockout round of 64 which will begin on Wednesday June 27. Some had it easy, others not so much. But all who made it breathed a massive sigh of relief. Just get through, wipe the slate clean, and start fresh on Wednesday.
Its like a battle field out there, said a Englands Darren Appleton, clearly relieved after beating Saudi Arabias Abdul Rahman Al Amar and advancing. You just want to get through. Theres a lot of great, great, great players in this event. In years past you kind of knew who would get through. But not anymore. Theres a lot of surprises, but no shocks. Im just happy. These tournaments are getting tougher and tougher.

32 PLAYERS SAY GOODBYE TO DOHA AS ALL BUT ONE OF THE TOP PLAYERS STAY ALIVE AT THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
32 players saw their dreams of glory crash and burn after a busy day 2 of the 2012 WPA World 9-ball Championship came to a close here in searing hot Doha, Qatar.
The proceedings inside the Al Sadd Sports Club went pretty much to the script, unlike day 1 where upsets were the order of the day. All but one of the sports big name players won and will continue on in the group stages.
The day started with Groups 13 through 16 seeing their first action of the tournament. The Philippines Ronnie Alcano, runner up last year in this event, easily took down Singapores Toh Kian Han, 9-3. The USAs Hunter Lombardo, one of only two Americans in this years championship, sprinted past Morrocan youngster Al Masskini, 9-2.
World number 8, Lee Van Corteza of the Philippines blanked Croatias Ivica Putnik 9-0. Japans Tohru Kurbayashi defeated New Zealands Ceri Worts, 9-6.
The Philippiness Dennis Orcullo, definitely one of the top five favorites to win this event, had a tight tussle early with the UAEs Ali Saeed Alsuwaidi, but prevailed 9-6. Also claiming wins were Germans Oliver Ortmann, and Ralf Souquet. The Netherlands Nick Van den Berg had a tough opening match against the Philippines Joven Alba, but prevailed, 9-7.
All winners in the group stages need one more win to advance to the knockout stage in the final 64. The losers of each match headed over to the left side of the bracket where they would need to win twice to advance.

DAY 1 AT THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP PRODUCES SURPRISING UPSETS AND SOLID OUTINGS FROM THE GAME'S BEST
(Doha, Qatar)--With 128 of the worlds best pool players on hand contesting the 2012 World 9-ball Championship, and all playing a slew of matches in their groups and trying, over the next few days, to whittle the field down to 64, its nearly impossible to predict who exactly will emerge as the new king of 9-ball.
But as day one here in blazing hot Doha, Qatar has come to a close, certain important trends have already revealed themselves. Perhaps most important among them is the fact that the talent level throughout the world of pool has risen dramatically in the last few years.
We all know that the Philippines, Taiwan, England and many European countries produce serious pool talent. But what about not so known hotbeds of pool such as Iran, Lebanon, Finland, Albania, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, New Zealand, UAE and right here in Qatar?
The first 48 matches held Saturday inside the Al Sadd Sports Club have proven one thing and that is that the sport of 9-ball has literally gone viral, with solid players emerging from the most unlikely of places. Which means known players cannot take any match for granted. And that, of course, brings to us another trend we will witness this week in Doha; fans should prepare themselves for lots of upsets.
The first surprising result of the day came in the very first group out of the gates, when Kuwaits Badr Al Awadi defeated former World 10-Ball champion Huidji See of the Netherlands, 9-7. It should be noted that Kuwait seems to be one of the big beneficiaries of the presence of big time pool tournaments being played year after year in the Middle East. Many of the Kuwaiti players are very competitive out on the table and seem to be gaining confidence with each passing year.
