Derby’s Jack Whelan, currently no 17 on the Amateur IPA rankings, wins all three possible titles at the recent ‘Golden 8 Ball’ Blackball weekend from 14th to 17th June at the Norbreck Castle Hotel in Blackpool.
In a remarkable display of skilfulness and aptitude, he became the unstoppable machine, defeating some incredibly talented players to take the Men’s Trophy and helping to take the Team Trophy and Mixed Doubles Trophy, at what is fast becoming one of the hottest events on the pool calendar. With 55 teams in attendance, the tournament has almost doubled in size from its debut last year and attracted a mix of players from Blackball, EPA and IPA organisations. Judging by the cascade of positive feedback on the Facebook group, the tournament is expected to grow further in 2013.

A RECORD FOUR KUWAITIS MAKE THE CUT AS THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS INTO THE KNOCKOUT STAGE
Judgment Day at the 2012 World 9-ball Championship in Doha, Qatar lived up to expectations as the pool gods passed down plenty of surprising verdicts and left us with a final 64 that promises an all-time classic shootout for pool’s biggest prize.
Pool fans around the globe can now look forward to three solid days of one intriguing match after the next, as the road to the world title picks up a massive head of steam. All the matches now become a race to 11, alternate break. The semi-finals and final will take place on June 29th, with the final being a race to 13.
Not surprisingly, the Philippines brings the largest contingent into the single elimination stage, with a power house lineup of 13 players out of their 17 original entries having qualified. Taiwan has put in its usual impressive performance with seven of its players having gone through. Japan has looked extremely strong so far and six players in the final 64 are a testament to a high grade effort on the table for the Japanese.
Two surprising developments so far point to a massive shift in the global pool landscape. The USA will have no representation in the final 64 of the World 9-ball Championship, while the tiny country of Kuwait will have four players competing for glory.
Indeed the pool world seemed to be turned upside down from the opening rack inside the cool confines of the Al Sadd Sports Club on Tuesday as a handful of big names were given their walking papers straight away.
England’s Chris Melling was surely on nearly everyone’s list as one of a handful of guys you’d expect to see go deep into this tournament. But after losing to the Philippines underrated Jundel Mazon on Day 1, Melling had to face another rising prospect in Nikolaos Malaj from Albania in a make or break match.

32 PLAYERS ADVANCE TO THE KNOCKOUT STAGE AS CLIFFHANGERS ABOUND AT THE WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN QATAR
There was something special in the air throughout the day today at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, and it wasn’t the crisp cool air conditioning offering comfort to fans and players alike.
It was an intangible, what we used to call on the east coast of the USA, “that certain something,” an unknowable, hard to describe feeling, when you know something is good, but you can’t quite figure out why. You just know it’s good, and it’s only going to get better. You just know it.
Perhaps it was the sheer volume of high quality and tight matches that took place, the incredible talent on display that is as good as has ever been seen in pool, all combined with the fact that on Day 3 of the 2012 World 9-balll Championship, the gravity of the moment, of the stakes involved, started to dawn on players and fans alike.
This part of the tournament is all about getting through to the next round. 32 players did just that today as they cashed in their chips to the next stage, the single elimination knockout round of 64 which will begin on Wednesday June 27. Some had it easy, others not so much. But all who made it breathed a massive sigh of relief. Just get through, wipe the slate clean, and start fresh on Wednesday.
“It’s like a battle field out there,” said a England’s Darren Appleton, clearly relieved after beating Saudi Arabia’s Abdul Rahman Al Amar and advancing. “You just want to get through. There’s a lot of great, great, great players in this event. In years past you kind of knew who would get through. But not anymore. There’s a lot of surprises, but no shocks. I’m just happy. These tournaments are getting tougher and tougher.”

32 PLAYERS SAY GOODBYE TO DOHA AS ALL BUT ONE OF THE TOP PLAYERS STAY ALIVE AT THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
32 players saw their dreams of glory crash and burn after a busy day 2 of the 2012 WPA World 9-ball Championship came to a close here in searing hot Doha, Qatar.
The proceedings inside the Al Sadd Sports Club went pretty much to the script, unlike day 1 where upsets were the order of the day. All but one of the sport’s big name players won and will continue on in the group stages.
The day started with Groups 13 through 16 seeing their first action of the tournament. The Philippines’ Ronnie Alcano, runner up last year in this event, easily took down Singapore’s Toh Kian Han, 9-3. The USA’s Hunter Lombardo, one of only two Americans in this year’s championship, sprinted past Morrocan youngster Al Masskini, 9-2.
World number 8, Lee Van Corteza of the Philippines blanked Croatia’s Ivica Putnik 9-0. Japan’s Tohru Kurbayashi defeated New Zealand’s Ceri Worts, 9-6.
The Philippines’s Dennis Orcullo, definitely one of the top five favorites to win this event, had a tight tussle early with the UAE’s Ali Saeed Alsuwaidi, but prevailed 9-6. Also claiming wins were Germans Oliver Ortmann, and Ralf Souquet. The Netherland’s Nick Van den Berg had a tough opening match against the Philippines Joven Alba, but prevailed, 9-7.
All winners in the group stages need one more win to advance to the knockout stage in the final 64. The losers of each match headed over to the left side of the bracket where they would need to win twice to advance.

 | NEW TALENTS, OLD HANDS SHINE IN DOHA |

DAY 1 AT THE 2012 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP PRODUCES SURPRISING UPSETS AND SOLID OUTINGS FROM THE GAME'S BEST
(Doha, Qatar)--With 128 of the world’s best pool players on hand contesting the 2012 World 9-ball Championship, and all playing a slew of matches in their groups and trying, over the next few days, to whittle the field down to 64, it’s nearly impossible to predict who exactly will emerge as the new king of 9-ball.
But as day one here in blazing hot Doha, Qatar has come to a close, certain important trends have already revealed themselves. Perhaps most important among them is the fact that the talent level throughout the world of pool has risen dramatically in the last few years.
We all know that the Philippines, Taiwan, England and many European countries produce serious pool talent. But what about not so known hotbeds of pool such as Iran, Lebanon, Finland, Albania, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, New Zealand, UAE and right here in Qatar?
The first 48 matches held Saturday inside the Al Sadd Sports Club have proven one thing and that is that the sport of 9-ball has literally gone viral, with solid players emerging from the most unlikely of places. Which means known players cannot take any match for granted. And that, of course, brings to us another trend we will witness this week in Doha; fans should prepare themselves for lots of upsets.
The first surprising result of the day came in the very first group out of the gates, when Kuwait’s Badr Al Awadi defeated former World 10-Ball champion Huidji See of the Netherlands, 9-7. It should be noted that Kuwait seems to be one of the big beneficiaries of the presence of big time pool tournaments being played year after year in the Middle East. Many of the Kuwaiti players are very competitive out on the table and seem to be gaining confidence with each passing year.

8 DAYS OF POOL HEAVEN IN STORE AS THE 2012 WPA MEN'S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP KICKS OFF IN DOHA, QATAR
The WPA 2012 World 9-ball Championship, considered perhaps the most prestigious title in men’s professional pool, has gotten underway at the beautiful Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.
The action over the next 8 days promises to be as scorching hot as the weather is outside, where searing hot winds sweeping in off the desert combine with the blazing Middle Eastern sun to send temperatures into the mid-40’s celcius.
Indeed the event has attracted 128 of the best pool players from over 50 countries, who are vying for $300,000 in prize money, with $40,000 going to the eventual winner.
The tournament is run in two stages. The first stage has the players divided up into 16 groups of 8. There the players will play a double elimination format, race to 9, alternate break. The top four players in each group, two from the winners side, and two from the losers side, will advance into the final 64, which begins on June 27th.
From there, the tournament becomes a straight knockout, with all matches single elimination race to 11, alternate break. The finals, which will be played on June 29th, will be race to 13, alternate break.
The list of names assembled here in Doha is a who’s who of the games top stars, with literally dozens of world championships and major victories among them. In all there are 10 current or former world 9-ball champions in the field, including defending champion Japan’s Yukio Akagariyama who won in this very venue last year.
Other world 9-ball champions include the Philippines Francisco Bustamante(2010), England’s Daryl Peach(2007), the Philippines Ronnie Alcano(2006), Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann(2003), Finland’s Mika Immonen(2001), Taiwan’s Fong Pang Chao(2000, 1993), the Philippines Efren “Bata” Reyes(1999), Germany’s Ralf Souquet(1996), Germany’s Oliver Ortmann(1995).

 | Southern Retains ‘Mersey 9 Ball Shootout’ On Home Soil |
BWPPA Ranking Event No.3 - The Dynamic Mersey 9 Ball Shootout Rileys American Pool and Snooker - Wavertree Church Road North Wavertree Liverpool L15 6TE www.bwppa.org www.rileys.co.uk

Liverpool cueman Tony Southern wins his 3rd BWPPA and his 2nd in a row title, on home soil winning the 2012 Merseyside 9-ball Shootout sponsored by Dynamic Billiards at Riley’s in Wavertree, Liverpool, over the weekend of the 16th/17th June 2012
Southern nicknamed “Robocop” by his fellow players, extended his lead at the top of the rankings to 70 points from Roy Kimberley. Matt Duffy, making his return to the tour, and a dangerous low seed in the first round, was Southern’s first opponent and was comfortably defeated 7-3, Welshman Craig Welsh was next up for Tony, and it was a complete contrast to his match with Duffy, with Southern taking a 3-1 lead and looking in command, and Welsh showing the true potential, talent and bottle all the players knew he had, battling back as the match went down to the wire, and Welsh took the match 7-6. This took Southern to the losers side, where he dispatched Shaun Madin 6-3, and then in a repeat of the final from the previous event, beat Gary Swift 6-3. Another hill-hill clash was next for Southern in the battle of the big hitters, but this time he was not be denied as he sent GB9 player Aslam Abubaker home 6-5.
Elsewhere in the event the former UK’s #1 Roy Kimberley looked to be back to his old form, with 7-2,7-0, and 7-3 wins over Adam Pearson, Frankie Gillen and Abubaker respectively, but then he ran into his old foe, Danny Luton in the semi final, who beat Kimberley for the 2nd event running with a 7-4 score line. Luton, like Southern had come through the losers bracket after a 7-4 loss to Welsh.
In the other semi-final and it was a rematch between Southern and Welsh, but after his efforts the previous day, Welsh had little left in the tank and Southern won comfortably 7-2.
The final was therefore contested between Tony Southern and Danny Luton. The final was not the close battle many expected, with Southern opening up a 3-1 and 4-2 lead, with a bit of good fortune and some good shot making.
At 4-2 down Luton missed a simple 9 ball to reduce the deficit to 1 rack, and that was the spur that Southern needed as he forged 6-2 ahead, and this knocked the stuffing out of Luton, who battled hard but eventually lost 7-3.

18-21 June 2012
This photograph, courtesy and © Zhao Yue - used by Pro9 with express permission. KELLY FISHER WINS THE 2012 WOMEN’S WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A 9-6 VICTORY OVER CHINA’S FU XIAOFANG
Capping an all around solid week of pool with yet another air tight performance, Britain’s Kelly Fisher won the 2012 WPA Women’s World 9-ball Championship with an emphatic 9-6 victory over Chinese superstar Fu Xiaofang, in front of a packed house inside the Richgate Shopping Center in this northeastern Chinese city.
With the victory Fisher now holds the distinction of being the only woman to ever hold the World 9 ball and World 10-ball Championships all at the same time. But perhaps more importantly, the win cemented Fisher’s status as the hottest player in the women’s game right now, and is a lasting testament to years of toil, long travel and plenty of near misses to go along with a lot of W’s. With the victory she will now claim the mantle of WPA World Number 1.
It was an all-around brilliant Thursday for the 34 year old from Yorkshire, as she took down two huge names in Chinese pool on their own turf. The opening salvo came with a dramatic match against 2009 World 9-ball Champion Liu Shasha in the semi-finals. Fisher had to slog it out for over two hours and the contest went down to the last ball, with Fisher claiming a heart stopping 9-8 win by a whisker.
The final started well for both players. Fisher won the lag and broke and ran for the early lead. Fu stepped up and did the same to tie the match at 1-1.
Fu then stepped on the gas for the next twenty minutes, performing perfectly, winning two safety battles sandwiched around a break and run, to go up 4-1.
Fu had clearly caught a gear and was well on her way to clearing the next rack for a massive 5-1 lead. But as she stretched far over the table to line up a shot, the referee called a foul, saying she had touched a ball with her shooting hand.
As so happens in pool, one small incident mysteriously sends the momentum, and the roll of the balls, over to the other side. Fisher cleared the table to cut the lead to 4-2. She then caught a break in the subsequent rack when an over-hit cue happened to land on a 6-9 combination, which she nailed.
