 | Chang Jun Lin wins the 2012 World 8-Ball Championship |
WPA Etisalat World 8-Ball Championships 2012 The Fujairah Tennis & Country Club Fujairah United Arab Emirates www.wpa-pool.com - Groups (.pdf file) - Live score - Photos www.world8ballchampionship.com www.fujairahtennisclub.ae
12-17 February 2012
 CHANG ALL THE WAY!
CHANG JUN LIN WINS THE 2012 WORLD 8-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP
Taiwan's Chang Jun Lin has won the 2012 World 8-Ball Championship, with an impressive and conclusive 11-6 victory over compatriot Fu Che Wei.
Call it a case of the student surpassing the master.
Taiwan’s Chang Jun Lin, who for the last ten years has been a pupil of fellow countryman Fu Chei Wei, did his pool teacher proud by winning the 2012 World 8-ball Championship, convincingly beating Fu in an all-Taiwan finals in Fujairah, 11—6.
Chang’s performance today, which started with a gritty 9-7 semi-finals win over England’s Chris Melling, vaulted him atop the pool playing world and deservedly so. Chang’s ability to read patterns, his even-keel demeanor, and his dead-eye potting skills, were all on display throughout the week in Fujairah and carried him through world class competition all the way to his first world championship.
The fact that Chang has learned much about pool and life at the feet of the 38 year old Fu, added a fascinating twist to what had become an all-Taiwan 8-ball party in Fujairah. The 26 year old Chang began studying the game from Fu at the age of 16. Despite traveling the world in the last few years, the two had never played each other in an international event.
The fact that these two ended up in the finals of a world championship was amazing result. As is the case in most pro tournaments, the tournament was constantly in a state of flux, with a single small roll of a ball determining outcomes of matches and careers. But by the time the finals rolled around, it was clear that the two hottest players this week had made it. Like Chang, Fu was playing red hot pool the last few days and had never come close to defeat. His 9-3 beat down of China’s Liu Haitao in today’s semi-final was just the latest in a string of powerful performances.

I've always fancied going to this, but never could make it. perhaps you could go for me and let me know how it goes, and I could live the tournament vicariously through your tales of triumph (or your wails of woe?)
Direct entry into the main pro event is available if you don't have the time to work through the qualifying days, and this event is very well established and has been very popular for many years so it should run like clockwork.

 | A personal invitation to European pool players from Edgar Acaba |
Mayor Antonino Calixto Int'l. 10 ball Cup Cuneta Astrodome Roxas Boulevard Pasay City Philippines
26-29 April 2012
Click the image to view the larger poster - use "back" to return here. International player registrations invited
This is the second big money tournament organised by Edgar Acaba and this time there is plenty of lead time for international players to make arrangements to attend and benefit from the very generous prize fund on offer.
The arena at the Cuneta Astrodome venue (actually rectangular and not dome shaped at all) is more accustomed to playing host to basketball matches, but has also been the venue of choice for everything from The Cranberries on tour to a WWF world championship event.

GREAT ESCAPE INTO THE FINAL FOUR
A LAST CHANCE COMEBACK PUTS CHINA'S LIU INTO THE SEMI-FINALS; JOINS FU, MELLING AND CHANG AS THE WORLD 8-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS TO THE FINAL DAY
For Karl Boyes, winning the World 8-ball title in 2010 fulfilled a lifelong dream for the talented Englishman. The 29 year old from Blackpool began his billiard career when he was 14 years old playing English 8-ball, a game similar to American 8-ball but played on smaller tables and with red and yellow balls. He played the sport for nearly 10 years and became one of the top players.
Boyes turned to American pool when the International Pool Tour came along in 2004, offering huge prize funds and 8-ball as the game of choice. When the IPT folded a few years later, Boyes decided to stick with the American game of pool, and quickly became an elite player in the pro ranks.

Saturday/Sunday 4/5 February 2012
BWPPA Event 1 Champion Fred Dinsmore congratulated by Darren Appleton Dinsmore pops across the Irish Sea to snatch Northern 9-ball Open
The BWPPA raised the curtain on the 2012 season on the 4th/5th February 2012 with the Dynamic Billiards Northern 9-ball Open held at Riley’s Barnsley. The first stop on this year’s tour had its biggest entry for a number of events, with 19 players entering the event, including newcomer Andy Johnson from Manchester, who was able to win 1 of his 3 matches using a borrowed cue.
The tour got off to a great start with some excellent pool on show as usual at these events. “The Sandman” Roy Kimberley was keen to hold onto his number 1 spot which he has held since the tours inception 7 years ago, but he knew he had to equal Tony Southern’s performance at this event to maintain top spot.
Irish invader Fred Dinsmore took home the spoils though with victory in the Main Event notwithstanding an earlier 7-2 loss in a 2nd round match with last years player of the season Welshman Phil Hendrickson. Phil is bound to win one of these events in the near future. Dinsmore had earlier dispatched Matt Duffy 7-3.
