The 2012 WPA World 8-Ball Championship begins Monday

WHERE KINGS ARE CROWNED

The international pool scene finally kicks off this February as the best pool players from all corners of the globe descend upon the mountainous emirate of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to contest the WPA 2012 World 8-ball Championship.

The tournament will begin Monday Feb. 13 and run through the final on Feb. 17 at the Expo Centre in central Fujairah and offers a total of $156,000 in prize money with $20,000 going to the winner. A stellar cast of 96 pool greats will make up the main field beginning on the 13th.

Fujairah is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, and the only one on the Gulf of Oman in the country's east instead of on the Persian Gulf (the other six emirates). Fujairah is the youngest of the seven emirates that make up the country. It is located in the central part of the Al Hajar Mountains. The capital of the emirate is the city of Fujairah.

The American game of 8-ball is arguably the world’s most popular and widely played cue sport, played and enjoyed by millions around the world every day. Interestingly this year marks only the 7th time that the WPA 8-ball World Championship has ever been contested, and all in Fujairah. The list of champions may be short, but they read like a who’s who of great pool players.

The first winner of the World 8-ball Championship back in 2005 was none other than the legend, Efren “Bata” Reyes of the Philippines. In 2006, 16 year old Taiwanese sensation Wu Chia Ching won the 8-ball world title just months after miraculously winning the World 9-ball Championship. The Philippines’ Ronnie Alcano captured the crown in 2007 also right after winning the World 9-ball Championship. The following year saw German great Ralf Souquet win his first world 8-ball title.

The tournament was not played in 2009. England’s Karl Boyes won the 2010 title with a nail biting 13-12 win over the Netherlands’ Niels Feijen.

T9B The Rookie Double Chance Championship

After the success of the Championship Of The South, Amateur Championship Of The South and the Championship Of East Anglia events run by T9B last year we are proud to announce this new event... THE Rookie Double Chance Championship.

The idea of this event is to find a new winner. We class rookie as players who haven’t won a T9B or any other big event. Players are welcome to apply to enter but wont be accepted if classed as better than a T9B -1 handicap player. All entries will be at Total9balls discretion and there decision is final.

This tournament will be different from other events because players will be entered twice (players will be randomly drawn in both half's of the draw, so you cant meet yourself until the Final). As each player is entered twice that means if you win both of your first round games your in round 2 twice.

The Lion Leaps to 2nd Consecutive Swanee Win

Named for beloved southern California player, Jay Swanson, the 16th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament (“the Swanee”) was hosted February 4-5 at Hard Times Billiards in Bellflower, California. A tournament steeped in tradition, the event is a virtual who’s who of west coast US and Pacific Rim players. Produced by CueSports International (CSI) and sponsored by Hard Times Billiards, CSI and the Magic Ball Rack, the event is known for being a two day grinder with a heady 192 player field of heavy hitters.

It is no small feat to cash in this event, but this year history took place. Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan won for a second consecutive year surviving a litany of fellow well known names including former Swanee champions Dave Hemmah (1996), Mitch Ellerman (2009), Amar Kang (2006) and the only other two time winner Morro Paez (1999 and 2001). Additionally, “The Lion” took out 2012 US Mosconi Cup team member Rodney Morris and “Mad Max” Eberle who himself has finished in the top three of the Swanee field 3 years (2005, 2011, and 2012). It was Eberle who initially knocked Pagulayan to the one loss side in the seventh round of the winner’s bracket. “The Lion” heaped revenge upon Eberle in the semi-finals sending “Mad Max” to the bleachers late Sunday night 7-2.

2012 Mark Lovell Memorial Finalists Darryn Walker and Ben Moore

The Inaugural Mark Lovell Memorial Tournament

Former snooker professional Darryn Walker claimed the silverware on Sunday 29th January 2012 at the inaugural Mark Lovell Memorial Tournament at Rileys, Solihull.

Those both within and outside the world of 9-ball will surely be aware of Mark's passing back in December last year. A minute's silence was observed by the mixed yet strong field of 31 entrants before play commenced - a small but significant amount of time to reflect on a man whose mere presence in a pool hall drew a smile from all faces around him.

Play kicked off with the opening 8 first found matches at 11:30am and hardly half an hour had passed before the first result was recorded; a 7-0 destruction of Roger Haddon saw Darryn Walker through to the winners' bracket last 16. Tony Weafer and Tem Dixon achieved the same score not much later against Keith Walderdine and Dave Hopkin respectively, with Lee Rigby's 7-1 defeat of Alec Tasker being the other highlight of the opening round.

Both the winners' and losers' brackets had now fully taken shape, and surprising results started to come through both of them. Roy Kimberley, the day's only wheelchair competitor, ended the campaign of Al Coton with a tremendous 5-1 victory. Dave Hopkin and Keith Walkerdine, both of whom had failed to score a rack in the previous round, also met in the losers' string. Once again, however, Walkerdine just couldn't find his feet and ended his competition without winning a single rack, leaving the tournament with a 5-0 defeat. Over on the winners' side, Tony Weafer made it two wins on the trot, sending Tem Dixon to the losers' side with a 7-5 win. Another highlight of the round saw a battle between Tournament Director and GB9 Chairperson Andy Warden and tournament and GB9 player/referee Martyn Royce. Warden came away with a 7-4 victory against Royce, and then continued his rich vein of form in beating Dave Keown to book his place in the single-elimination stages. Joining him in the last 8 were Tony Weafer (beating Al John 7-4 in the winners' side last 8 ), Bristol's Jon Davies (beating Al Coton 7-2, Kevin Simpson 7-6 and Darryn Walker 7-3), and GB9 Tournament Director Lee Rigby (beating Mark Hughes 7-6 and Steve Williams 7-4).
