2012 Mark Lovell Memorial Finalists Darryn Walker and Ben Moore

The Inaugural Mark Lovell Memorial Tournament

Former snooker professional Darryn Walker claimed the silverware on Sunday 29th January 2012 at the inaugural Mark Lovell Memorial Tournament at Rileys, Solihull.

Those both within and outside the world of 9-ball will surely be aware of Mark's passing back in December last year. A minute's silence was observed by the mixed yet strong field of 31 entrants before play commenced - a small but significant amount of time to reflect on a man whose mere presence in a pool hall drew a smile from all faces around him.

Play kicked off with the opening 8 first found matches at 11:30am and hardly half an hour had passed before the first result was recorded; a 7-0 destruction of Roger Haddon saw Darryn Walker through to the winners' bracket last 16. Tony Weafer and Tem Dixon achieved the same score not much later against Keith Walderdine and Dave Hopkin respectively, with Lee Rigby's 7-1 defeat of Alec Tasker being the other highlight of the opening round.

Both the winners' and losers' brackets had now fully taken shape, and surprising results started to come through both of them. Roy Kimberley, the day's only wheelchair competitor, ended the campaign of Al Coton with a tremendous 5-1 victory. Dave Hopkin and Keith Walkerdine, both of whom had failed to score a rack in the previous round, also met in the losers' string. Once again, however, Walkerdine just couldn't find his feet and ended his competition without winning a single rack, leaving the tournament with a 5-0 defeat. Over on the winners' side, Tony Weafer made it two wins on the trot, sending Tem Dixon to the losers' side with a 7-5 win. Another highlight of the round saw a battle between Tournament Director and GB9 Chairperson Andy Warden and tournament and GB9 player/referee Martyn Royce. Warden came away with a 7-4 victory against Royce, and then continued his rich vein of form in beating Dave Keown to book his place in the single-elimination stages. Joining him in the last 8 were Tony Weafer (beating Al John 7-4 in the winners' side last 8 ), Bristol's Jon Davies (beating Al Coton 7-2, Kevin Simpson 7-6 and Darryn Walker 7-3), and GB9 Tournament Director Lee Rigby (beating Mark Hughes 7-6 and Steve Williams 7-4).

2012 American Mosconi Cup Ranking Announced

HAVING LOST the last two Mosconi Cups, America will be looking to get back on track at the York Hall this December, and with that Matchroom Sport can announce the selection criteria and qualifying events for the ’12 American team.

The American Mosconi Cup Ranking will consist, currently, of five events – all taking place within the USA. In addition to the calendar of events, other tournaments, currently in the planning stages, may be added to the list, provided they carry the correct credentials.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event will be allocated points and at the conclusion, after the 2012 US Open, the top two players will automatically gain entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The remaining three players will be Matchroom Sport wildcard picks although the ranking will play a part in this.

Bonney crowned Queen of the South

HAMPSHIRE’S Emma Bonney claimed her first women’s snooker title for more than three years with a cue bought on the internet two days previously.

Superior matchplay helped the world number three defeat Hong Kong cueist Jaique Ip Wan In 3-1 in the Southern Classic final at Fareham Snooker Club.

Bonney, who accounted for two more of the four Hong Kong entries en route to the final, potted a difficult pink down the side cushion to take the first frame.

The pair shared the next two. Ip Wan In, needing a clearance in the fourth, sunk a brilliant last red but missed the final brown and Bonney cleared.

“I played some really good safety today, which was the telling thing against the Hong Kong girls,” said the 35-year-old from Portsmouth.

“I was keeping them pretty tight to the bottom cushion when I could and it did make quite a difference.”

Bonney admitted she envies the Hong Kong quartet’s professional status.

“They’re very dedicated,” she said. “They have a full-time coach and they play full time.

“They will be the ones to beat in the future. They’ll always be strong competition. They came over a few days early and came to the club and practised. I envy them.”

2012 European Mosconi Cup Ranking Announced

FOLLOWING on from success at the 2011 Mosconi Cup in Las Vegas last December, the selection criteria and qualifying events for the ’12 European team can be announced.

The European Mosconi Cup Ranking will consist of 11 events – six Euro Tour events and five ‘World’ events. The World events will carry approximately 50% more points due to the international strength of the field.

Only players finishing in the last 32 of each event will be allocated points and at the conclusion, after the 2012 US Open, the top two players on the European Mosconi Cup ranking will automatically gain entry to the Mosconi Cup side.

The remaining three players will be Matchroom Sport wildcard picks although the ranking will play a part in this. With England’s Mark Gray, a Mosconi Cup winner in 2008, having won the opening event in Treviso in December, he is the early leader of the 2012 Race to the Mosconi Cup.

In addition to the calendar of events, other as yet unannounced tournaments may be added to the list, provided they carry the correct credentials and criteria.

Superb quality live stream by Accu-Stats.com from DCC 2012

There has been a long wait for the first major event of the year, and all the big guns have been getting itchy trigger fingers, so it's no surprise to see that this eagerly anticipated event has brought the stars out to shine, and who knows, perhaps how things go here will set the trend for the new year? Will 2012 be another year of European domination, or the beginning of the American revolution. Despite what appears to be a lack of talent from Taiwan, Japan and China, there are plenty of very strong Filipinos, will Efren Reyes be able to pick up yet another DCC crown or will the years finally show on the Peter Pan of Pool? If we're really lucky, we'll get to see some little known "road players" surface into the DCC limelight, grabbing some cash before slinking back into the shadows of America's billiard parlours, or, perhaps we will see some fresh young talent rise from the ranks to take his place among the familiar names of pool?

9 Ball, One Pocket and 9 Ball Banks - Three massive individual tournaments decide the "All-Around" Champion at this incredible action fest of a hustler's jamboree, and this is going to be the BIGGEST and BEST year ever.

Representing Great Britain is the omnipresent "Dynamite" Darren Appleton - hoping to make a good start to 2012, and currently making good headway on the "9 Ball Banks" division, a DCC title would really make his day! Who else is there? Everybody! Efren Reyes, Francisco Bustamante, Ralf Souquet, Rodney Morris, Shannon Daulton, Earl Strickland, Niels Feijen, Scott Frost, LeeVan Corteza, Evgeny Stalev, Ike Runnels, Dennis Orcollo, John Brumback, Jose Parica, Stevie Moore and hundreds of others.

Once again, Pro9 has some "ACCESS-ALL-AREAS" passes for the Accu-Stats.com PPV - full professional commentary, top quality streaming, multiple cameras, and lasting the entire duration of the event - the normal price is $79.60, even Accu-Stats "Special Price" is $63.95 (or $9.99 per day) but Pro9 has a very limited number available for an ultra special price available Pro9 PPV Special Offer on a first come-first served basis to European readers - as usual, availability is limited so buy now and we'll email you with your log-in details.

Contrary to popular belief - Accu-Stats is actually broadcasting during very social hours for European viewers... the vast majority of matches broadcast are at totally acceptable viewing times for all of Europe, yesterday's match broadcasts were at 4.30pm, 7.00pm, 9.00pm, 10.30pm, 11.59pm, 1.30am, and 3.00am - perfectly acceptable for a Saturday night!
