Pro9 interviewed Darren Appleton before the Mosconi Cup, here's what he had to say.

Pro9 Darren, this time last year you announced you were moving to America, so before we talk about pool, can you tell me what it was like when you first arrived, where is your new home and what is it like? How does it compare to where you lived in the UK, and did you manage to settle in quickly?

Darren I settled in very easily to American life, mainly because of my amazing girlfriend Angie and her family making me feel so welcome. Life here is less stressful, more laid back, and it's easy to get around. Most of all, the pool is much better... there's more action and more tournaments. I am currently living in Allentown, Pennsylvania and so far, it's good. I still travel a lot so I pass and stop in England every other month. It works out great at the moment.

Pro9 What's the best thing about your new daily life in the USA? Is there anything you have missed not being in the UK, or have they got everything covered?

Darren The main thing that I miss is my family and UK television. Besides that, everything is great and I feel happy in America. I typically go to the gym, practice, play golf, shop... the usual stuff.

Pro9 It's been a full year now, have you been "living the dream" and has it lived up to all your expectations? Are there any negative aspects to living full-time in the USA, or any surprises you weren't expecting?

Darren There haven't really been any surprises. I have spent a lot of time in the States before. Like I said previously, I travel so much that I am not there as much as I would like. But yes, I am living the dream... the traveling can be tough but besides that, I am very happy on and off the table. I finally got my work sports visa so that's a big weight of my mind.

Pro9 I've noticed you have a new love in your life, both gorgeous and fun, please tell how and where did you meet Angie? Can she play pool? I can see she is really supportive when you are in competitions, does having a supportive partner make a big difference compared to being single? How does she react when you are playing the big money matches?

Darren She's the love of my life and I am so lucky that she's so supportive to me at home and when I'm away. Angie does a lot of my dirty work for me, for example, if I miss a flight or need to book hotels etc., she is great with things like that. She is very calm when she watches so it helps me to be calm as well, but inside, I know she's a bag of nerves. Angie has definitely made a big difference to me on and off the table. Yes, she is a lot of fun but she's also a little shy. She plays a little bit of pool for fun, nothing serious. I first met Angie a few years ago, but at the time she was dating someone. Last year, after the 2010 US Open, we started talking and kept in touch. A few weeks later, we met for dinner and we hit it off instantly. The rest is history, we get on so well. If you're happy off the table, it makes you stronger mentally. I truly believe this, and this year it showed in my results.

The Turning Stone Classic XVIII

The mid-season event on the Joss Tour continues in the style in which it started, with an abundance of the best talented pool players on American soil - several Team USA Mosconi Cup members like Johnny Archer, Shawn Putnam and Rodney Morris, as well as other top names such as Earl Strickland, father and son Ernesto and Oscar Dominguez from Mexico, Shane Van Boening and more, vying for a share of the $25,000 added prize fund!

There are a few notable European players in the mix too, including Darren Appleton, Ralf Souquet and Raj Hundal, all facing off with the full 128 player field at the Turning Stone Casino Resort in New York State.

Feijen brings it home for Europe

EUROPE has successfully defended the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup following a convincing 11-7 victory over the USA at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It was Holland’s Niels Feijen, in his seventh Mosconi Cup, who downed the winning 9 ball which sparked mayhem as his team mates flooded the arena.

It also delivered Feijen the Most Valuable Player award, achieved for two singles and two doubles wins: "It got a bit shaky but they went in,” he said of his 6-3 victory over Rodney Morris to seal the Mosconi Cup.

“I just want to thank the crowd, the British and Europeans and you need them to make it. There were some immense moments and thanks to the coach for doing a super job. He gave us speeches every morning and kept us sharp.”

Europe one away from glory

TEAM EUROPE is now one match away from retaining the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup after a one-sided blitz on the American team in front of a standing room only crowd at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

After getting the better of things yesterday, the Americans entered the day with high hopes but were battered from start to finish with only Shane Van Boening contributing some red to the score board.

Needing a great start to the day, the USA lost an exciting opener as Appleton and Feijen got the better of Dechaine and Putnam by 6-3. That restored the Europeans three point lead that they held at the start of day one, but the final rack of the match was one of the best safety battles in Mosconi history as all four players took turns to leave the cue ball tucked up.

It was Feijen who broke the deadlock as he made a table length bank on the blue 2 and from there the Europeans ran out to take the match.

“Yesterday we lost the first doubles match 6-5 but Niels and Nick had played well. You need a bit of luck at the right time and we had a couple of rolls there,” said Appleton.

"But we played well at the end and had a lot of fire inside us - Niels is a fantastic player to play with," he added.

USA right back in it

TEAM USA recovered from a first day hammering at the PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup as they put themselves right back into contention, winning three matches to Europe’s two at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Stellar performances from the Americans saw them level the match at 4-4, before the Europeans derailed their momentum to take the final two games and move into the fourth day with a two point lead.

There was plenty of Mosconi Cup drama as debutant Mike Dechaine overcame Ralf Souquet 6-1 and Rodney Morris had an outburst that he will be happy to forget in a hurry. However, coming into the day three points down, Team USA will be happy to have reduced the deficit.

Europe enjoy superb opening day

AFTER the first day’s play at the 2011 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup, Team Europe holds a commanding 4-1 lead as they cashed in on some tentative play from the Americans at the MGM Grand.

Aside from Archer and Putnam’s solid show in the first doubles match of the tournament, none of the Americans were firing on all cylinders and captain Charlie Williams will have a job to do for tomorrow.

Europe by contrast looked like thoroughbreds with big names like Souquet and Feijen looking the part and rookie Chris Melling pulling off a stunning win in the last game of the day.

Watched by his father, who was celebrating his 60th birthday, the 32 year-old Melling looked superb as he came from 3-0 down to steal the final match of the day from Shane Van Boening with a hill-hill win.

It was a bitter pill for the Americans to swallow as the difference between 3-2 and 4-1 is immense, and they will need to dig deep tomorrow if they are to reverse their fortunes.

Mosconi Cup - USA Captain's Journal

This has been one of the greatest honors of my life. It's also a little intimidating and surreal, coaching and leading some of these great players that I myself have looked up to when I was younger. I also wanted to clear up some inaccuracies or perhaps miss-perceptions about my chosen role as the Captain. One of the items, is my nationality. So to clarify, I was indeed born in South Korea. My birth parents were both Korean. They split near the time of my birth, and I was adopted by my stepfather, who was a sergeant in the US Army. I was raised in Virginia from the time I was 2 months old till 21 when I moved to Orlando, Florida, my current home of the past 13 years. South Korea is one of the biggest allies of the US. In America, I grew up taking Tae Kwon Do and one thing you will notice in every Korean martial arts school, is there will be a USA flag always side by side with the Korean flag, this includes on every uniform that students wear as well. That's how strong the tie is between Korea and the USA. When I visited Korea, I received notoriety as a Korean American player, same as Jeanette Lee my fellow American pro player with Korean heritage. I have played for Korea in some exhibition events, and have been very proud and pleased of my acceptance of it even though I am a US citizen. I can say this, my selection as one of the youngest Captains of the Mosconi Cup and first Asian American, this is a pleasing thing to the Korean and Asian community. And though the masses have been very supportive, I wanted to explain the dynamics to those who may have any questions. I like to add, I played for Team USA five times myself, with a winning track record 4 out of the 5 times contributing to 4 wins for the USA in Mosconi Cup history. Special thanks to Johnny Archer, Mike Dechaine, Rodney Morris, Shawn Putnam, Shane Van Boening, and Europe's Darren Appleton for their public and vocal approval of this honor given to me. To be forward , anyone to doubt my loyalty to the USA Team or America I find very amusing as it is so far from the truth.

Please enjoy my re-cap of a Team USA Captain's log.

Charlie Williams, Korean American professional pool player.
