Portuguese beat Swedes in Team Final of European Seniors Championships

Saturday, 13 August 2011: Team Portugal defeated Team Sweden in the final of the Dynamic European Seniors Championships with a clear 3:0 victory.

The final match was not so much a thriller as the earlier matches were. The results were quite obvious in favour of the Portuguese. Henrique Correia (POR) smashed Kent Karlsson (SWE) with 7:3 in the 10-ball encounter. Luis Torres (POR) played Magnus Lindgren (SWE) in 9-ball. Lindgren made too many mistakes and was at no point in time able to put pressure on Torres.

2011 EVENT 3 - GB9 NORTHERN MASTERS

The GB 9 Ball Tour has returned once again to the Barceló Hotel in Daventry for the third of this season's events, the GB9 Northern Masters - hot on the heels of last month's Paul Medati Trophy in which Chris Melling, Matthew Lawrenson and Darren Appleton took the medal's in the Main, Challenge and Pro events.

There's no Appleton at this event as he is currently slicing his way through the field on the Seminole Pro Tour in Rhode Island at the moment, but there's plenty of stellar talent to fill the void including the much talked about Craig Osborne, recent winner of the Total9Ball Championship Of The South tournament, and favourite to represent Team England, alongside Allison Fisher in Dragon Promotion's World Mixed Doubles, being broadcast on ESPN in China next month...

...No pressure mate!

Editor's update: This challenging comment was laid down by Pro9 early on Saturday 6 August 2011... Craig "Shotgun" Osborne delivered the goods on the evening of Sunday 7 August, overcoming Imran Majid 11-9 in the final of the 144 player main event of the GB 9 Ball Tour's Northern Masters. Congratulations Craig... No pressure at all! ;o)

10-Ball Tournament for Women Players in Finland

Here's another tournament, organised by the players, for the players - and this time it's the ladies of Finland who have shown the initiative and sorted out a superb two venue competition - culminating in a shopping centre show-down for the finalists.

Live streaming was provided free of charge at both the group stages in the lovely BilliardCircus Kivenlahti, as well as at the final Kamppi Shopping Centre. Photos and results are updated here, and at the official websites linked above.

Early shock results included Ine Helvik, who commuted between Norway and Britain just so she could play on the GB9 Ball Tour, lost her first group match 4-6 against local Finnish player Nita Viitala. Helvik didn;t let that one slip affect her overall performance and proceeded to qualify from her group and eventually bowed out in the semifinal stage, finishing joint 3rd with Italy's Barbara Bolfelli.

The two finalists were predicted by the knowledgeable pool fans from a very early stage, Sweden's Caroline Roos and Finland's Marika Poikkijoki were the early favourites, and they didn't fail the pundits - although the final match could have gone either way. Roos had looked invincible from the very start of the event, and it was the Swede, dressed all in black, who made the best of the ultimate game, out-playing her final opponent by the slimmest of margins to take the title with a 8-5 victory!

On 4th April 2011, OnTheHill.jp published a statement for Yukio Akagariyama:

"Following the Great East Japan Earthquake in March, I have decided to donate all of the prize money I may win this season to the Japan Red Cross for their relief efforts."

"As I have traveled all around Japan, including the disaster stricken areas, to take part in challenge matches with amateur players, I have received much support from the billiards community in the Tohoku and Kanto regions, so the problems they are facing were never something I could just dismiss."

"I feel deeply sorry for all those who died, remain missing, or still languish in public shelters like refugees in their own country."

"I was profoundly impressed by the generosity of my fellow professional sportsman - Ryo Ishikawa, one of Japan’s top golfers."

"I was inspired to do the same even though we play in different spheres."

"This year, whenever I play pool, I hope to alleviate the burden of those in the disaster stricken areas. I shall do my utmost to live up to their expectations and play my best for them in all my matches."

"We all live for something, and for me it is to play pool. I want to use my skills not just to delight the fans, but also to help those less fortunate, however limited that aid may be."

Craig Osborne - Ipswich

Craig Osborne wins Total9Ball Championship Of The South

Phil Wildman has done it again! Proved that there's always something new and exciting to be brought to 9 ball tournaments, keeping players coming back for more, time and time again.

Craig Osborne was the eventual victor, after a full day's play in St. Albans, taking home the lion's share of the £1260 prize fund at the Total9Ball event, after his ultimate victory over Adam Collins in the final.

This tournament was different from other events because players were able to enter twice (once in the top half of the draw, and once in the bottom half, so you couldn't meet yourself until the final). If you entered twice and won both of your first round games you would play in round 2 twice too!

Entry fees and handicaps were staggered too, with Amateur Entry at £27 for 1 entry or £43 for a Double Entry, while "Ex" Pro Entry wa £32 for 1 entry and £48 for the double entry. Finally, Pro Entry was £37 for the single £53 for the double.

Pro players started each game off -3, Ex Pro players started each game off -2, and Top Amateurs had to start each game off -1, with everyone else starting each game off 0 or +1

With a maximum 64 entries or 32 double entries, this looks like being a cracking new format, and live results were updated in the article below.

Chris Melling - Great Britain

Magician Melling wins New Billiard Cup 2011 in Italy

The €12,800 guaranteed prize money attracted some international class players to this International 10 Ball Open at the Circolo New Biliard in Veneto - near the top of Italy's famous boot, and along with a plethora of premier Italian talent like Fabio Petroni and Bruno Muratore, there were also players from Switzerland, France and the UK, including Karl Boyes and Chris Melling.

It was the latter who ultimately triumphed, with a stupendous run through the talented field - culminating in his 8-4 final match victory over Switzerland's Dmitri Jungo.

On his return to England, an elated Chris Melling said, "The event was very well run. Me and Karl decided to go because we had nothing on, and it was good match practice too."

"The club was great, lots of spectators and interest. The venue was good but a little tight in some areas to play shots, and it was like an oven, but great people and a great tourney for me too."

"I would like to thank Conan and Nico - they did a fantastic job, and I really look forward to next year."
