CHINA OPEN - MELLING BY A MILE!

ENGLAND'S CHRIS MELLING STEAMROLLS CHINESE-TAIPEI'S HSU KAI LUN TO WIN THE CHINA OPEN 9-BALL Give Chris Melling an inch, and he takes a mile.
Thats just how Chinese Taipeis Hsu Kai Lun must feel right now, as the burly Englishman put on one of the most powerful displays of 9-ball pool seen in the professional game in some time, capturing the China Open in an all out rout, 11-3.
Melling won $40,000 and, in the process, declared loud and clear that he will be a force to be reckoned with among an already strong heap of English and European pool players for the foreseeable future.
Thats the best Ive ever played, an ecstatic Melling said moments after lifting the trophy. I knew I would win the match when I was up 6-2. I knew then it would be tough for him to come back. I was just playing too good.
Anyone who happened to catch one of Mellings matches inside the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium yesterday and in the semi-final today could see he was the clear favorite to take the crown. The Englishman, who was twice a world champion in English 8-ball and has only been playing competitive 9-ball for two years, was literally oozing with confidence. Everything about himthe way he walked around the table, his extremely fast play, the way he stared down layouts and especially the audacious way he potted difficult balls and moved the cue ball aroundspoke of a man with a winning attitude. He never gave his opponents any breathing room, pounced on the smallest of mistakes and quickly put racks on the board.

PERFECT 9-BALL, SUPREME CONFIDENCE BRING THE BRIT AND CHINESE-TAIPEI UPSTART TO THE BRINK OF GLORY IN CHINA OPEN
Two relative unknowns on the 9-ball circuit. Two players playing lights out pool. One sure to be entertaining final.
Britains Chris Melling and Chinese Taipeis Hsu Kai Lan both played perfect 9-ball pool Sunday morning in Shanghai as they each emphatically cruised into the finals of the 3rd annual China Open in Shanghai to be played later today.
In the first semi-final Melling defeated the Netherlands Niels Feijen 11-7. In the second semi-final Hsu surprised everyone with an amazing 11-2 drubbing of former double world champion Ronnie Alcano of the Philippines.
Melling picked up the express train where he got off yesterday after taking down the Philippines Lee Van Corteza and then Germans Thorsten Hohmann. The 32 year old Brit and former two time world champion in English 8-ball is on fire right now, playing with supreme confidence and the belief that he cant lose.
He needed that rock solid mind set too as Feijen came to win as well. The two Europeans broke and ran three out of the first four racks in the alternate break format. But no matter what Feijen threw at Melling, there was always an answer coming back. And quickly at that, as one mistake against the fast playing Brit these days means opponents pay a hefty price.

MANNA FROM HEAVEN
The China Open Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium 655 Yuanshen Road Pudong New Area Shanghai China www.my147.com www.top147.com www.wpa-pool.com

16 MORE ADVANCE TO THE CHINA OPEN KNOCKOUT STAGE AS THE SKIES OPEN UP OVER SHANGHAI
The thick, hazy skies finally opened up over Shanghai this afternoon, bringing with it torrential downpours and booming sounds of thunder and lightning. Inside the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium the unmistakable sounds of the summer monsoons would surely be interpreted differently on Judgment Day here at the third annual China Open 9-Ball tournament. For some, it was manna from heaven. For others, the inclement weather spelled certain doom and gloom.
16 more players from the mens side were counting their rainy day blessings at the conclusion of the first two sessions on day 2 of the $275,000 event. They now join the eight players from day 1 with spots in the final 32 single elimination knockout stage which begins tomorrow.
One of the happiest players in the arena this afternoon was Britains Scott Higgins. Playing on the losers side of his group, Higgins drew the legend, Efren Reyes of the Philippines in a do or die match for both players. It was Higgins first time to play the Hall of Famer, and the barrel chested Brit used the pressure to his advantage, buckling down for a solid 9-3 win.
I broke and ran four times and capitalized on some of his mistakes, a clearly excited Higgins said afterwards. You want to beat him because hes a legend. But the most important thing is that I qualified for the last 32. I dont think Id ever want to play him for money, though.

Morris, Immonen, Chamat, Drago and Hundal - Photo Kurt Roos. Click the image to view the larger photo (use "back" to return here). Raj Hundal takes runner up spot and Ten Ball Challenge title
It was close, but Raj Hundal's hat-trick ambition has been denied and his two year reign of the Interpool 9 Ball Open has come to an end at the hands of fellow Dragon Promotions player Rodney Morris. The best pals had a close fought battle in the final, matching each other neck and neck all the way to the 5-5 scoreline in the race-to-11 final, but then the Hawaiian superstar found an extra gear and took the main event title with an 11-5 victory.
British-Indian Hundal wasn't too disappointed with the result, as earlier in the weekend he had nailed the 24 man Interpool Ten Ball Challenge, topping the field comprised, among others, of such pool luminaries as Mika Immonen, Tony Drago and Marcus Chamat.

$275,000 China Open set to kick off this week in Shanghai
The China Open Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium 655 Yuanshen Road Pudong New Area Shanghai China www.my147.com www.top147.com www.wpa-pool.com

$275,000 China Open set to kick off this week in Shanghai
Shanghai, one of the great cities of the world, and Chinas bustling commercial hub, will play host to the worlds best men and women pool players as the China Open kicks off June 6-12.
In just its few short years of existence, the China Open has become one of the most prestigious championships in all of professional pool. This June, 68 men and 48 women will be coming from all corners of the globe to test their skills in an exciting 9-ball format and vie for one of the sports biggest prize funds; $162,800 for the men, and $112,800 for the women. Fans can expect to see plenty of the sports current and rising stars. On the mens side, the Philippines is sending a large contingent led by Hall of Famer and current World 9-ball Champion, Francisco Django Bustamante, and current World 8-ball champion Dennis Orcullo. Chinese-Taipei will be offering their usual powerhouse lineup, including recent Beijing Open winner Chang Jun Lin, and young star Ko Pin Yi. Host country China will be led by the likes of World 10-Ball runner up Fu Jan Bo, Lui Haitao, and Li He Wen. China can now boast one of the worlds best players with the addition of former double World Champion, Wu Jian Qing(formerly Wu Chia Ching) who has recently obtained his Chinese citizenship. Wu, though, will have to go through the tough qualifiers to make it into the tournament proper.
Representing Europe will be Finlands Mika Immonen, the legendary Ralf Souquet of Germany, and his compatriot, Thorsten Hohmman, who won the Philippine Open in April. Expect lots of other stars from the continent to make the trip to Shanghai.
