USA 4 – 3 Europe

IT WAS all square in the Friday night session of the 2010 PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup as both teams scored two points apiece. That leaves the USA just a single point ahead and the feeling is that this year’s event will go down to the wire.

Three of the four matches were decided by the single rack as if to emphasise the closeness of the competition. The final match was a high-quality encounter which saw Shane Van Boening edge past Nick van den Berg in a match that either player could have won.

It all came down to the final rack when Van den Berg got to the table but was forced to play safe after a poor positional shot. Van Boening blasted the cue ball across the table and managed to fluke the two into the middle pocket. One pot and a 3/9 combination and it was all over and America went to bed as Mosconi Cup leaders.

In the barn-storming show-opener, Dynamite Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes raised the roof of the York Hall as they overcame Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening to level the overall score at 2-2.

6-3 was the score and it was a match full of nerves, atmosphere, misses and some brave shot-making – mainly from Darren Appleton. His match-winning shot was indicative of his play in general as he slam-banked the 9 ball back up table.

Boyes enjoyed some traditional Mosconi Cup banter with Dennis Hatch who was sitting in the stands and at times the crowd got over-exuberant but it was a typical York Hall Mosconi Cup match of days gone by.

Boyes who made his fair share of mistakes, including a 9 ball to win the match was honest in his assessment; "That shot was down to nerves. With some of the balls I missed my mindset was not right but for that 9-ball I thought this place will go crazy instead of focusing on the shot, but it's all a learning curve."

USA 2 – 1 Europe

TEAM AMERICA took the early lead at the 2010 PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup as Corey Deuel and earlier Dennis Hatch and Rodney Morris gave them two points after Europe had won the earlier team match.

A solid start from Nick Varner’s men but with only three of the four scheduled matches played, due to the length of the opening match, there is everything to play for.

An excellent win for Deuel over Mika Immonen as he had trailed 3-0 and with a big first day crowd getting increasingly exuberant, he did well to take the match 6-4.

Earlier, Europe got off to the perfect start as they inflicted a come-from-behind win over the Americans to draw first blood at the 2010 Partycasino.com Mosconi Cup. It was the opening five man team match and America looked favourites for the point with a 5-4 lead but with two balls left on the table, Dennis Hatch left Rodney Morris hooked behind the 9 ball and the Hawaiian failed to make contact. With ball in hand the Europeans levelled it.

Fighting Talk From US Open Champ

DARREN Appleton believes Europe has the best pool players in the world and that will lead to a home victory in this year’s PartyCasino.com Mosconi Cup.

Appleton is part of the European side aiming to retain the trophy this week after slumping to a disappointing 11-7 defeat in Las Vegas in 2009.

However, Appleton believes that loss will serve as a ‘reality check’ and claims his side were complacent and not motivated enough last year.

“The problem last year was we all expected to win and that’s the wrong attitude to have, especially in pool as the game requires luck at the right time,” said Appleton.

“Last year Mika was winning everything and went there confident, but arrived late and was suffering with flu.

“We had all done a lot of travelling, a lot more than the US players, and maybe we weren’t motivated enough.

“Last year I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was a great experience. At the time I was upset but not really sick about losing but a couple of weeks afterwards I realised it’s a bigger event than you think.

Manchester emerge triumphant at UPC Nine-ball Championship

Riley’s Wavertree and Grand Central in Liverpool were treated to an extravaganza of pool in the recent UPC Nine-ball Championships, as University of Manchester extracted revenge by overcoming University of York in a repeat of last year’s final to win their first University team title. Bernd Gentner completed a memorable double for Manchester as he won the Individual Championship, defeating Kevin Lau (Huddersfield) in a one-sided final. With over 170 students participating, this event continues to boast the title of the biggest annual nine-ball event in the UK.

The team event used a format where the two highest placed 1st teams in each of the eight groups progressed to the Championship play-offs with the best placed team not qualifying for the Championship going forward to the Trophy play-offs. Retaining the twist of the existing double-elimination formula in the groups, there was all to play for from the moment the first ball was potted!

Appleton ends the Euro Tour season with another victory for the UK!

Darren Appleton has won the final Euro Tour event of 2010 with an 8-6 victory in the final over home favourite Francisco Diaz Pizarro at the prestigious Villaitana Wellness, Golf & Business Resort in Benidorm - we managed to snatch a few words with Darren after the tournament, and asked him some of the questions on everyone's minds...

Pro9: Congratulations Darren, what a great way to end your year on the Euro Tour, I hear you were in two minds about attending, why was that?

"Dynamite" Darren Appleton: Thanks Dave... Yes, two minds because it was my last euro tour and I've got so much to do before I go to the States, and then the weather came... Actually, Scott Higgins decided the night before to come to my house - if he hadn't, I would definitely have stayed at home, especially when I saw the weather on Wednesday morning, so I suppose I've got him to thank. We missed our original flight because he turned up late because of the bad road conditions.. But obviously now I'm glad I went!

Pro9: Was this a tough event, or do you prefer the ten ball events?

"Dynamite" Darren Appleton: Yes of course it's tough at any time but even more so when the pockets are so big and so many good players. I prefer 4 and half inch pockets, these play like well over 5 inch so it makes a big difference and because of the tapped tables it makes the break easier but at the end of the day, you need some rolls and you've got to pot the pressure balls which I did very well - played great all the way, just one match where I didn't play great against Mark Gray. I would have been sick to lose that as I was always in control but thankfully I took a good break and run at 7-7 after putting myself under so much pressure.

Besides that I was never trouble in the event, except the final was a great match and Diaz played great against me. He's always dangerous because he is so talented and attacks everything, but for the last 6 weeks I have been in great form and full of confidence, so I was pleased how I responded from 5-4 down as he was flying. I'm very happy and it's a great way to sign off the Euro Tour after a miserable season on it without playing too bad but go back to what I say - the tables are a great leveler and some players haven't given me chances because of the way the ball rolls. This game's crazy sometimes but since I changed a few things with my action I feel I am better than ever, and I feel there is still more to come from me so I'm excited for 2011.

Jouni Tähti defeats Aaron Aragon in Reno final

After four days of battle, Finland's Jouni Tähti has conquered all, with an impressive display of skill and consistency at The Peppermill Resort Spa and Casino in Reno.

The super Finn's performance throughout the event was a study of a player in the zone, as match after match his opponents fell to his unstoppable potting skills, superb position play, and composed temperament - not once did he look under pressure, even in the final against the USA's finest wheelchair player, the experienced Aaron Aragon.

This isn't the first time Tähti has held the World title. In 2002 he collected his first WPA World Championship Trophy, an event which, coincidentally was also held on US soil, in Decator, Alabama.

A good complement of European wheelchair players made the trip to the desert venue, including Brits Tony Southern, Danny Luton, Roy Kimberley, Matt Duffy and Craig Welsh. Aslam Abubaker was also going to represent the UK but received some sad news concerning the death of an uncle before the event and had to cancel at the last minute, we send our condolences to Aslam and his family.
