 | Round up of the Sunderland 9 Ball Championship 2009 |
Sunderland 9 Ball Championship Rileys American Pool and Snooker Club - Sunderland 30-32 John Street Sunderland Tyne & Wear SR1 1JG Telephone: 0191 5658472 www.rileysltd.com www.sunderlandpool.com
Tuesday 7 April 2009
Phil Burford (file photo). SUNDERLAND 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-UP
Thanks to everyone who turned out for our very first 9-ball competition of the year on Tuesday night, it was a really good and exciting event with some big surprises, and an excellent turnout of local lads and touring pros alike.
Some of the top names in the SPPL were in action on the night, Hopeful Steve Dawson was overcome 7-2 by Simon Gardner, before Anthony Miller was taken out by our very own Marc Smith (7-4). Chris Cowie was in relentless form through the early rounds, but he met his match in Graham Hickman who's dazzling performance took him as far as the semis, before tour pro Phil Burford ran in two racks to beat the SPPL favourite 7-5.
In the bottom half of the Draw, Steve Thompson was quietly making his way through the field, winning a scrappy game Adam Smith in the second semi-final of the evening (7-4) to take him into the final with Burford. By then though Burford was in great touch, and displayed a masterclass of 9-ball, running out the final 4 racks to finish 7-1 and take first prize and title of Sunderland 9-ball Champion 2009.
We want to again give thanks to everyone who helped organize and showed interest in the competition, we will be organizing more 9-ball events later in the season, so watch this space! If you needed any proof that the SPPL is becoming the driving force in pool in the Northeast, it was that we were able to pull this off!

Scenes from the Mickey Flynns 10 Ball Tournament Photograph by Andrew Warden Mickey Flynns 10-Ball results and news
Today's Mickey Flynns 10-Ball event got underway with a disappointingly high number of no-shows - as a mere 34 players turned up after a healthy 48 people had shown a significant interest in the event.
The group stages started with a race to 5 format but when the number of no-shows became evident the races were increased to 7 so that the few that did make the effort get a decent bit of time at the tables and there's plenty of action for the rail-birds to watch.

Ebdon edges Higgins 10-8 in China Open Final
In a surprise turn of events Peter Ebdon and John Higgins were the two combatants fighting for victory in the final of the China Open today.
This event has provided a host of surprises, such as Stuart Pettman's showing in a World Ranking semi-final, and Peter Ebdon's recent form certainly gave no hint that he would be such a threat at this event.
Higgin's thrilling 5:4 victory over World Champion Ronnie O'Sullivan has been the stand-out match of the tournament so far, but the final proved to be an equally close affair with Ebdon only winning by a two frame margin.

 | 9-Ball Buddies Make The Leap From Pool To Pop! |
NINE TO FIVE Announcing their first album... "Nine in the afternoon" Darkside Promotions presents... The latest boy-band sensation Listen to their new album here
Wednesday 1 April 2009
9 ball buddies make the leap from pool to pop!!!
Following in the musical foot-steps of Rico Diks, five more cue artists have turned their talents from pool to pop, with the formation of what is sure to be the biggest "manufactured" band since "The Spice Girls"!
Brad, Joe, Sean, Lee and Chris have been rehearsing frantically to be ready for their UK tour, to promote their new album "Nine in the afternoon". Reluctant front man Chris said, "The album comes out on Saturday and we'll be starting the tour the same day with a gig in Cambridge".
Heart-throb Brad says, "We're not giving up pool, in fact, we've arranged our tour so that we can play pool at weekends... We'll be at Mickey Flynns on Sunday!"

Congratulations to David Alcaide, Italian Euro Tour Champion. Photograph © Bethan Louise Sage / EPBF. Spaniard wins Italian Open!!!
The EPBF Euro Tour visited Italy this month, with a stop at the Holiday Inn Resort at Castel Volturno. Over 180 players from over 35 countries made the trip to Naples to test themselves on the most successful 9 ball tour in the World.
Spaniard David Alcaide was in rare form as he tore through the single elimination last 32 stages, and not one of his opponents was able to take more than five racks off him. This is the first win on the Euro Tour for the Malaga based player who's previous best results were bronze medals in Switzerland, Germany and Spain.
The top finishing British player was Craig "Ozzie" Osborne who reached the semi-finals losing to the eventual winner. Mark Gray, Daryl Peach and UK resident Tony Drago lost in the Last 16, and Darren Appleton and Chris Melling were eliminated in the Last 32. Imran Majid forfeited the tournament to be with his family after being informed that his father had died - our condolences go to him and his family.
Matches were streamed live on the Euro Tour website and at Bwin, where the virtual "railbirds" could chat and even have a bet on the results whilst watching the action.
