Van Boening And Kazakis Out Of 2022 World Pool Masters

Newly crowned World Champion Shane Van Boening and Defending Champion Alexander Kazakis are both out of the 2022 World Pool Masters at the Europa Point Sports Complex, Gibraltar live on Sky Sports, DAZN, Viaplay, and Matchroom.Live in selected countries after losses to Lo Ho Sum and Dennis Orcollo, respectively.

Alexander Kazakis 0-7 Dennis Orcollo

Max Lechner 7-2 Dimitri Jungo

Shane Van Boening 6-7 Lo Ho Sum

WHERE TO WATCH

BRACKET

Kazakis came into the contest on a high after a run to the quarter-finals of the World Pool Championship last month and a whitewash win in last year's final over Shane Van Boening but the Greek was rooted to his chair as Orcollo rallied at a canter to the quarter-finals. It was a clinic from Orcollo who has now won 14 racks in a row after coming from 4-0 down behind in his afternoon Preliminary Stage match with Eklent Kaçi. Kazakis' opportunities were few and far between and he missed a big one in the fourth rack after losing the cue ball off the six, he failed to get any position on the eight and clear up the rest of the rack. At 4-0 down, Kazakis missed the five ball when looking to cut it in the top right corner and that was then Orcollo 5-0 up and two away from victory. From then on, Orcollo breezed into the quarter-finals where he will play the winner of Joshua Filler and Skyler Woodward.

Max Lechner is appearing in his second World Pool Masters after making his debut last year and started his campaign against Dimitri Jungo who had overcome Mario He in his preliminary clash on Thursday evening. Lechner headed into the tournament as the No.5 seed off the 2022 Nineball World Rankings and it was justified as he raced into a 6-0 lead before Jungo put on a fight to get two on the board at 6-2 but it proved to be too little too late for the Swiss as Lechner wrapped up the last rack.

Van Boening faced a tricky Last 16 clash with Lo who had beaten Denis Grabe in his opening encounter on Thursday. It did seem to be business as usual for Van Boening who led 2-1 but breaking in the fourth, the American went in off and Lo made it 2-2. Lo plays out of Hong Kong, China and soon the former Junior World medalist was 4-2 ahead and only looking up as Van Boening faltered. Van Boening was trying his best to get into it at 4-3 but he missed a full-length effort on the two to open up the table for Lo who then led 5-3. Lo broke and run in the ninth rack to be on the hill, but the contest was far from done in the following rack after Lo missed the 5 along the rail with only the seven and nine left up on the table. Van Boening got back in to make it 6-4 and soon 6-5 to make it a tense finale.

Fans were treated to the best of Van Boening as he made a comeback for the ages in Milton Keynes at the World Pool Championship, and he lived up to his reputation to force the first hill-hill finish of the week. Van Boening cracked in the last rack though with a scratch early on before Lo came back to secure a historic victory. Van Boening struggled to break and run losing the rack on four occasions where he broke.

The Last 16 continues from 1 pm Central European Time with defending two-time champion David Alcaide meeting Ko Pin Yi who beat brother Ping Chung earlier today. Jayson Shaw's conqueror faces US Open runner-up Aloysius Yapp before Abdullah Alyousef takes on the majestic and always unpredictable Naoyuki Oi of Japan.

Saturday 7th May – Afternoon Session – Last 16 – 12:00pm UK time

David Alcaide (4) vs Ko Pin Yi

Aloysius Yapp (6) vs Mieszko Fortunski

Naoyuki Oi (7) vs Abdullah Alyousef

Saturday 7th May – Evening Session – Last 16 / Quarter Final 1 – 5:30pm UK time

Albin Ouschan (3) vs Francisco Sanchez Ruiz

Ko Pin Yi Beats Brother Ping Chung At 2022 World Pool Masters

Ko Pin Yi knocked younger brother Ko Ping Chung out of the 2022 World Pool Masters at the Europa Point Sports Complex, Gibraltar live on Sky Sports, DAZN, Viaplay, and Matchroom.Live in selected countries as the Preliminary Stage was wrapped up.

Ko Ping Chung 4-7 Ko Pin Yi

Eklent Kaçi 4-7 Dennis Orcollo

Abdullah Alyousef 7-2 Niels Feijen

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 7-5 Mika Immonen

Pin Yi and Ping Chung were obviously well-matched heading into their first competitive match against each other in a Matchroom event and fans were not disappointed as both oozed class on the table despite early tensions which saw both brothers make mistakes in the opening two racks to let the other in or one all. There is a six-year age gap between the two and it was Ping Chung who started to find a rhythm at 3-2 before an impressive jump shot on the one ball on the way to leading 4-2. A costly mistake on the four by Ping Chung in the seventh rack did prove to be the turning point as Pin Yi soon pulled it to 4-4 with a break and run. Pin Yi, a previous World Champion is looking to add his first piece of Matchroom silverware to his extensive CV and he did his chances no harm as he set up a Last 16 tie with two-time winner David Alcaide in the Last 16.

Eklent Kaçi headed to Gibraltar on the back of reaching the semi-finals last year before a hill-hill defeat to eventual winner Alexander Kazakis but he knew he would need to beat previous winner Dennis Orcollo to stand any chance of getting near the semis this year. Kaçi got off to the best of starts taking the opening four racks with very little sweat, but Orcollo was back in the Nineball arena for the first time since the 2021 US Open Pool Championship and he could've been forgiven for being caught cold at 4-0 down. At this point though, Kaçi missed what seemed to be a simple cut on the one in the fifth rack, but Ocollo then bounced back to win seven on the spin. Robocop lured Kaçi in and despite a few lapses of concentration it was as efficient as ever from Orcollo who sealed seven racks to seal a 7-4 win.

Abdullah Alyousef was making his World Pool Masters debut against Niels Feijen, a two-time winner in the penultimate match of the afternoon session and he produced one of the performances of his career to win 7-2. Feijen rattled the middle pocket on the five at 2-1 down to Alyousef and it set the tone for the remainder of the contest. At 4-1, Feijen made another costly error on the six ball as Alyousef went into dreamland at 5-1. Feijen would've been hoping for more after his wild card invite but Alyousef proved his run to the World Pool Championship semi-finals was no fluke wrapping up a big win for the Kuwaiti cueist.

Francisco Sanchez Ruiz brought a crowd with him for his match-up with former World Champion Mika Immonen who had received a late call-up to the tournament. Immonen had the better of the opening exchanges to lead 4-2 but it was soon level at 4-4. The downfall in that position came in the seventh rack when Immonen missed what seemed to be a simple cut on the eight ball. The pair were inseparable as it went 5-5 but that's when the recent Derby City Classic 9-ball divison winner Sanchez Ruiz pulled through for a big win. The final dagger for Immonen coming in the winning rack for Sanchez Ruiz as he failed to make the two-ball safe.

The Last 16 begins from 7 pm Central European Time with defending champion Kazakis set to meet Ocrollo in the opener before Max Lechner gets his campaign underway against Dimitri Jungo who overcome Mario He last night. The evening will be wrapped up by newly crowned World Champion Shane Van Boening vs Lo Ho Sum of Hong Kong, China.

Friday 6th May – Evening Session – Last 16 – 7:00 pm Central European Time

Alexander Kazakis (1) vs Dennis Orcollo

Max Lechner (5) vs Dimitri Jungo

Shane Van Boening (2) vs Lo Ho Sum
