Klatt dumps Busta out of Masters
CANADA’S JASON KLATT broke Filipino hearts at the Block Atrium Mall in Manila as he recorded an excellent 8-3 victory over Francisco Bustamante in their first round match at the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters.
A heavy favourite at the start, Bustamante was never at the races as Klatt moved into an early 3-0 lead. The Pinoy legend pulled it back to 5-3 but Klatt put in a solid performance as he outlasted his opponent for the victory.
"The performance was average. I think I ran two or three breaks but we were struggling with the break but overall I took advantage when I needed to,” said a delighted Klatt.
"I'll never forget this for sure and it was an experience in itself playing Francisco Bustamante. I played Efren last year in the Predator 10-Ball with the same crowd and it's awesome to play two legends.
"I missed a few balls but I knew the pressure was on him and I just tried to take advantage."
Klatt can look forward to playing Fu Jianbo in the quarter-finals.

This is the 19th running of the Masters and its first outing in the Philippines. The event is televised locally by Solar Sports and syndicated internationally by promoters Matchroom Sport. The event sports a $66,000 prize-fund with $20,000 going to the champion.
In the final match of the first day, it was ‘the Slayer’, Davao’s Lee Van Corteza, who recorded a fantastic hill-hill victory over reigning World 10 Ball Champion, Huidji See of the Netherlands.
Both men played well enough throughout and there were enough unforced errors to aid the web and flow of the game.
Leading 7-6, See missed a shocking 1 ball into the centre pocket and the crowd, recovering from Bustamante’s shock exit earlier, cheered ‘Van Van’ home as he squared it up at 7-7.
With the impetus swinging his way, Corteza closed out the final game for a tremendous victory in a highly entertaining match up.
Play continues tomorrow afternoon with the final two first round matches – Ralf Souquet v Mika Immonen and Efren Reyes v Darren Appleton.
Raj Hundal - India Hundal ousts World Champ to advance
THERE WERE wins for Fu Jianbo of China and India’s Raj Hundal at the Block Atrium at SM Mall North in Quezon City, Manila as the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters first round matches continued through Saturday afternoon.
In the opening match of the 3.00pm session, Fu Jianbo, here to defend his World Cup of Pool title with Li Hewen next week, played exceptionally well to eliminate England’s Chris Melling by 8-4.
Unfortunately for the European No.2, he barely put a foot wrong but was left sitting in his chair for the latter part of the match by the excellent play of Fu. The first two racks were shared before a 6-9 combination in the third gave Melling a 2-1 lead.
The Englishman moved into 4-1 lead and looked set in the race to eight match. Fu, though, dug in to level it at 4-4 and a perfect break in the ninth game, gave the Chinese the opportunity to take the lead which he did.
Fu then closed out the match with a succession of break and runs to book a spot in the quarter finals.
This is the 19th running of the Masters and its first outing in the Philippines. The event is televised locally by Solar Sports and syndicated internationally by promoters Matchroom Sport. The event sports a $66,000 prize-fund with $20,000 going to the champion.
In the second match of the session, India’s Raj Hundal made the most of an out of sorts Yukio Akagariyama, the reigning World 9 Ball Champion, to record an 8-4 win and advance to the next round.
It was a scrappy encounter at times, but Hundal had the edge and got his game together in the closing stages to run out the match.
“I started off shaky, adjusting to the cloth which was very slick and I missed a couple of intricate shots but I put that down to nerves,” said Hundal.
“As soon as I settled though, I felt would run the match out and I did in the end. Before I came here I was making a fundamental error in my stroke which I couldn’t see myself but Amar Kang, my World Cup partner spotted it and helped me out.
‘In the end, I felt confident in my game and technique and I thought that if I have to do a job on him I would,” he added.
Play continues this evening with two more first round matches – Francisco Bustamante v Jason Klatt and Huidji See v Lee Van Corteza.
Dennis Orcollo - Philippines Defending Champ Orcollo Through After Easy Win
WORLD NO.1 and defending champion Dennis Orcollo eased his way into the quarter-finals of the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters as he defeated 2003 champ Tony Drago (Malta) by an 8-2 score line.
Played at the Block Atrium at SM Mall North in Quezon City, Manila, the tournament features 16 top cue men from around the world and it was Orcollo who got the proceedings underway.
A nervous error, missing the 8 ball in the opener, gave the rack to Drago, but the Filipino picked up the pace and raced into a 6-1 lead. Drago took the eighth game but that was his last contribution as Orcollo ran out an 8-2 winner.
"There's much pressure as I want to win this tournament. It's really hard to win your first match and I'm just thankful for the support from the fans,” said Orcollo.
"I'm trying really hard to win this tournament. I missed an 8-ball that I'm disappointed with but it was nice to win. No one has won this event back-to-back and I have a chance, I just need more luck."
This is the 19th running of the Masters and its first outing in the Philippines. The event is televised locally by Solar Sports and syndicated internationally by promoters Matchroom Sport. The event sports a $66,000 prize-fund with $20,000 going to the champion.
In the second match of the midday session, Taiwanese hope Chang Jung-lin got off to a great start as he dominated proceedings to put paid to Shane Van Boening’s Masters chances for another year.
26 year-old Chang has established himself as one of Asia’s premium tournament players over the past few years, and never let Van Boening off the hook in the short race, winner breaks match.
The match was poised at 3-2 in favour of the American but the Chinese Taipei man turned the screw to lead take the next three to lead 5-3, aided by some poor play from the American. From there Chang closed out the match to book a spot in the quarter finals where he plays Orcollo.
Play continues with two more first round matches – Chris Melling v Fu Jianbo and then Raj Hundal v Akio Akagariyama.
Dennis Orcullo (Phi) v Tony Drago (Mlt) 12.00 noon Saturday 3rd Chang Jung-lin (Tpe) v Shane Van Boening (USA) 13.00 Saturday 3rd ---------------------------------------------------------------- Chris Melling (Eng) v Fu Jianbo (Chn) 15.00 Saturday 3rd Francisco Bustamante (Phi) v Jason Klatt (Can) 16.00 Saturday 3rd ---------------------------------------------------------------- Huidji See (Ned) v Lee Van Corteza (Phi) 19.00 Saturday 3rd Ralf Souquet (Ger) v Mika Immonen (Fin) 12.00 noon Sunday 4th ---------------------------------------------------------------- Darren Appleton (Eng) v Efren Reyes (Phi) 13.00 Sunday 4th Yukio Akagariyama (Jpn) v Raj Hundal (Ind) 18.00 Saturday 3rd
The quarter-finals follow on Sunday afternoon and evening at 15.00 and 18.00 while the semi-finals take place at 15.00 on Monday afternoon and the final is at 19.00 on Monday evening.
The format is race-to-8, winner breaks, and all matches will be televised live throughout on Solar Sports in the Philippines. Matchroom Sport TV will subsequently produce 15 x 1 hour highlight shows for global distribution.
Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, “I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the strongest fields ever assembled for the Masters. There will be no easy matches and every player here is a champion.
“With only 16 players we have tried to assemble the toughest field possible given the geographical spread required.
“It will be hard to back against the Filipino players in front of what will be huge crowds in Manila, but with the strength in depth of the line-up, they all have a chance.”
The 2011 World Pool Masters is sponsored by PartyPoker.net, the world’s leading online poker school. Cloth is supplied by Iwan Simonis, Super Aramith balls by Saluc, tables by Star Xing Pai and the Official Cue is Predator.
