PEACH LEADS THE WAY FOR BRITS IN MANILA

Daryl Peach , the UK ranked No.1 player, became the first British player through to the knock-out stages of the 2006 Philippines World Pool Championship as he recorded an excellent 8-4 win over home hope Ramil Gallego at the PICC in Manila .

Peach, the 34 year-old from Blackpool , made it two wins from three in Group 32 and that will definitely be enough to win his group and secure a spot in Wednesday’s single elimination stages.

He earlier beat Robb Saez of the USA 8-6 before dropping his second match to Thai unknown Tepwin Arunnath. However, his victory over the dangerous Gallego was good enough to ensure his progress.

“It feels brilliant to be the first one through. I know that we’ve got a good set of players here and we’re not in Manila to make up the numbers, he said afterwards.

“It’s a bit weird here really. When Reyes or Bustamante are on the main table and you’re playing upstairs there’s always a roar like a football match and you jump out of your skin!

“I’m enjoying it though and I’d love to be playing on the main TV table against one of them – I’d certainly raise my game.

“It’s funny but I’ve never had a good run in this event. I’ve qualified for the knock out six times in seven attempts but I always seem to run into someone on fire and twice I’ve been knocked-out by the eventual winner.

“I’m playing well though and I’ve been winning tournaments at home. I’m hitting the ball good and more importantly I’m confident.”

Peach now gets a well-deserved day off to prepare himself for the last 64 which start on Wednesday afternoon.
