A Royal Appointment

England�s Darren Appleton faces one of the most unusual opponents of his career when the 2006 World Pool Championship kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) � a Royal Prince and son of one of the richest men in the world.

Appleton , 30 from Pontefract, West Yorks has drawn Prince Muhtadee Billah, son of the Sultan of Brunei, and one of the top pool players from his country.

The Yorkshireman is one of the nine-strong contingent of UK players assembled in Manila , Philippines for the biggest and richest 9 ball pool event on the calendar.

In total there are 128 players chasing a first prize of $100,000 in an event live throughout on Sky Sports as well as 35 countries in Asia .

Running from 4 � 12 November, the tournament features 128 players from 42 countries gunning for the US$100,000 top prize.

Appleton finds himself in Group 10 alongside the Prince and local hero Francisco Bustamante, one of the legends of the game.

�It�s a bit weird really playing a member of a royal family but I won�t take him lightly. He�s got some form out here in Asia and a win against him will certainly increase my chances of making the knockout stages, said Appleton .

�When it comes to wallets I probably come a distant second but in the talent stakes I reckon I�ll shade it!� he added.

Prince Billah who has a twenty-man entourage in tow, even has a personal butler to carry his cues into the arena. Aside from his prowess with a pool cue, he is also the First Minister of Brunei.
