EMPIRE POOL TOUR LONDON 8 BALL OPEN
The tournament got underway and the results were coming thick and fast... Exactly 100 players turned up for this spectacular event and the action was non-stop at the EPT London 8 Ball Open.
Celebrity players Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mika Immonen and Marcus Chamat all managed to avoid getting hooked up in the current travel congestion and were playing American style 8 Ball Pool in Harrow.
Click on "Read More..." for the results so far.
Ronnie O'Sullivan at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Finland's "Ice Man" Mika Immonen at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Rafael Guzman from Spain at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Norwegian Christian Johannesen at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Pascal Budo from Belgium at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
France's Vincent Facquet at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Rob McKenna from Wales at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Ronnie O'Sullivan doesn't make the cut at the EPT London 8 Ball Open
Ronnie O'Sullivan is out!!!
I received a phone call from the Assistant Tournament Director saying that Ronnie was leading 4-0 when Rob McKenna started playing some awesome pool. Running out from everywhere and dishing up everything.
Ronnie O'Sullivan at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Ronnie's break let him down, and frankly, although technically fine, good even, it perhaps didn't have enough power and it had been as dry as a bone all day, and he only won one more rack losing the match 10-5.
Losing at the stage prior to the Last 16 means that Ronnie hasn't made the cut for the prize money stage on the second day, and will be making the trip home with nothing to show for his efforts.
Chamat in shock defeat, Hyden the victor
Marcus Chamat's hopes of another win on British soil have fallen in the Last 16 stage of the star-studded London 8 Ball Open.
Matt Hyden was his downfall, and although Hyden was trailing at one point, he managed to regain the lead after some quality play and eventually took the hill-hill final rack for a 10-9 victory.
Marcus Chamat from Sweden at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Hyden was modest in victory saying he treated it like "any other match" and wasn't pressured at all by the crowd of people watching.
Hyden is now guaranteed £400 for his efforts and will face 27 year old Serge Das from Bree in Belgium in the next round of the Empire Pool Tour's London stop.
It's a "Shaw" thing!
Scottish prodigy Jayson Shaw started his campaign with a win over namesake So Shaw, and is now proving unstoppable at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open.
Only 17 years of age, but proving the he's got a wise head on his young shoulders, he's had a giant toppling start to his day with a tremendous 10-4 win over the much more experienced Martinho Correia.
Scotland's Jayson Shaw at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Shaw has recently been on a bit of a roll of beating the "big names", indeed even the great Michael Valentine conceded defeat at the recent annual US Open Qualifier held by the Scottish Tour and Shaw also won the Scottish National Championships this year too, not the Junior Division - the main event!
At the tender age of 17!!!
Hopefully his experience here will give him confidence for his trip to the States later in the year, watch this space!
Pro9 Competition Winner stays local to enjoy prize
Regular Pro9'ers will remember that Pro9.co.uk offered a £75 entry fee to the EPT of your choice in a free to enter competition a while back.
Pro9 competition winner Colin Rennison at the Empire Pool Tour's London 8 Ball Open
Well, the winner of the competition was Colin "Maddog" Rennison, who chose the London event to use his prize as Harrow Rileys is his home club.
Colin unfortunately suffered a defeat in the first round at the hands of the very capable Lee Chenman, but he enjoyed his chance and is now making up for it by having a good streak in the plate tournament being run for any players who want to play on the Sunday.
Money Added to Sunday Plate Competition
The Sunday Plate Competition is looking like a popular choice as 32 runners have entered and as a nice bonus, UKSportsManagement have added £100 to the prize fund, so that it totals to a handsome £740 - not bad for a plate!
The prize fund will provide the winner with £270 and the runner up with £140. Losing Semi Finalists will receive £85 and £40 will be awarded to the losing Quarter Finalists.
