Continents collide in Moscow

It's down to six players at the World Junior 9-Ball Championships, only three final matches are left for Thursday.

Detailed review of Day 3 and the finals to follow. Now we just remind you that three final matches will be played in succession. The day opens with juniors of U17 division where Robbie Capito (Hong Kong) faces Sanjin Pehlivanovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina). This one is scheduled at 11 am.

Next comes Girls U19 final. April Larson matched her Russian friend Kristina Tkach in every aspect but had to settle with 3rd place losing 7-9. Tkach will play Lee Woo-jin (Korea) who dealt with defending champion Chen Chia Hua. Girls' final is at 1 pm.

And finally, U19 juniors will determine the champion. Just again, like in other final matches of the day, this is Asia versus Europe. Fedor Gorst once again proved too strong for Patrick Hofmann and proceeded to the final match where his opponent is Enkhbold Temuujin, the runner-up from last year. This is going to start at 3 pm.

Note all times are Moscow. Chime in via Facebook live, watch ABNbilliards free broadcast (English commentary) and join the chat.

Day Two Report from Moscow

Two days of competition passed at the WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championships. Half of quarter-final places are booked.

Day 3 is going to be long for those still in action in Moscow, Russia. Play will proceed until semi-finals, with only six players (two from each respective division) left for the finals.

Best Russian juniors Kristina Tkach in Girls U19 and Fedor Gorst in Juniors U19 are through to single elimination with convincing wins. Both gave away just 5 racks in two matches, provided Fedor has a longer race to 9 as opposed to 7 between girls. Moreover, on his way Gorst defeated last year's runner-up in U17 division Enkhbold Temuujin and 3-time 2016 European champion Patrick Hofmann (Germany).

Joining his teammates in quarter-finals is Egor Trifonov who won one of the spots in qualification event, he is also undefeated after two rounds of play.

Boys divisions are dominated by EPBF representatives so far, as of eight players from both divisions who advanced there is only one from the region other than Europe. That's Robbie Capito (Hong Kong) who defeated European champion from Poland Wiktor Zielinski in a double hill match.

Six American players are still competing yet on the losers bracket, and another one guaranteed to take a shot at the medals (that is with a chance to advance to the semis). Alex Jo Booth survived a scare in a nail-biting encounter with Nataly Damian (Peru), as her opponent was making a shot on the 8-ball at hill-hill with the 9 hanging in the jaws of the corner pocket. April Larson, always a strong favorite at junior level, was defeated by one of the Korean players that look pretty capable of winning a title this year. Larson will have to win another match to get to Last 8 round of the event.

Despite the face Curacao and Bonaire players had to play the very first round of U17 and then Bonaire faced Costa Rica, it is still two players from Panamerican Confederation keeping a chance (Costa Rican Andres Aguilar and Tremus Shamir of Curacao). They face US players Eric Roberts and Joey Tate. The latter together with Alex Booth are the ones I would especially mention as very well-mannered and show great sportsmanship. Both Alex and Joey perform as they are dedicated to fair play which is so nice to see from them aspiring young players.

MOSCOW hosted the opening ceremony of the 2017 World Junior Championships today.

68 athletes from 22 countries traveled to Russia's capital to determine this year's World 9-Ball Champions in three divisions, including Girls, Juniors Under 19 and Pupils Under 17. Top youth athletes from five continents will decide who is going to be the best this year.

Moscow is hosting this event for the first time, and the organisers worked hard to ensure maximum comfort for both players and spectators. The Opening Ceremony was attended by WPA Secretary Ishaun Singh. In his opening address, President of Moscow Billiard Union Evgeny Ivanov said he was very excited about Moscow hosting an event of this calibre and wished that all contestants perform at their best so that the strongest win. Vice President of the Federation of Billiard Sport of Russia and Sports Director of the World Championships Lev Yaroslavtsev said he appreciated how well the tournament was organised and wished every success and great victories to all participants. After observing the National Anthem of Russia, and the Championships were declared open.

The tournament will continue for 4 days, with preliminary rounds from October 30 to November 1, and the three final matches on November 2. Eight of nine tables are streamed live free of charge on the Internet, with live scoring available for all tables.

The World Championships are sponsored by Gazprom —General Partner of the Federation of Billiard Sport of Russia—as well as Predator, Simonis and Aramith. The tournament is organised by the Federation of Billiard sport of Russia with support from the European Pocket Billiard Federation, Moscow Billiard Union, Dynamic Billard, Weekend Billiards, and active participation of ABN Billiards and Propool.info.
