Great Britain's Darren Appleton in action in Jakarta!

Appleton is first player into the Semi-Finals

Great Britain's Darren Appleton has overcome Germany's Ralf Souquet in their Quarter-Final battle in Jakarta, to become the first player advancing into the Semi-Finals, and Europe's last remaining hope for victory at the superb GUINNESS World Series Of Pool tournament in Indonesia.

The match between the two European giants of pool, broadcast live to millions of fans around the world on ESPN Star Sports, had the former Mosconi Cup team-mates matching each other's scores in the early stages, until Appleton pulled ahead two games clear - from then on, he led all the way to the rather one-sided 8 : 4 victory.

    "Read More..." for the details.

Nobody could say that Appleton had an easy route on this event, as you would never choose to play a Filipino as powerful as Dennis Orcollo, but that's exactly who he mat in the Last 16 Stage, but even Orcollo was having an impossible time finding a chink in Appleton’s near perfect game. It was a complete turn-around of events for the Filipino former world no. 1 who enjoyed a fairly unhindered cruise towards the single elimination round.

Showing extreme control of the table with impeccably placed safety shots, Appleton took five unanswered racks off a blazing start go to stun and frustrate his Filipino rival. In the middle rounds, it became clearer that the Englishman was the better prepared - man taking full control of the match and allowing the Filipino only three racks under his name before finally forcing a visibly frustrated Orcullo to concede at the 11th rack.

GUINNESS World Series Of Pool - DAY 2

Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines in action in Jakarta!

    Orcollo, Yang Take Charge

The second day of the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool was highlighted by two spirited performance that saw 2010 World Pool Masters champion Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines and Indonesian top seed Ricky Yang bagged a well-deserved quarterfinal slot today.

Orcollo triumphed over  Chinese rival Li He-Wen, 8 – 3 his single knockout stage encounter to lead the charge of his country’s quest for 10ball glory.

Looking sharp after enjoying an unbeaten romp through the double-elimination round of the tournament, organized by ESPN STAR Sports, the Manila native was expected to deliver a spectacular showing against Li, and he wasted little time to stamp his authority earlyby stealing the first rack away from Li to race to an early 4 – 0 lead.

Refusing to be outdone, Li bounced back with a four-ten combination in the 5th rack, followed by a clean run-out of the table after the Filipino scratched on his break attempt in the 6th to make things interesting at 2 – 4.

True to form, the man they call ‘Robocop’ was unfazed by Li’s two-rack streak as he pulled off a beautifully orchestrated break-and-run out in the 8th rack to enjoy a 6 – 2 advantage.

Li, a former World Cup of Pool co-champion, was finally able to stop the bleeding after Orcollo’s failed attempt at a 2ball jump towards the center pocket to pocket another rack. But that would be the last time he would add to his score because it was an all Orcollo show from the 10th rack onwards.

Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines in action in Jakarta!

Said Orcollo: “I’m really pleased with how I’ve been playing in the tournament, the balls are rolling my way and luck seems to be on my side. Hopefully this streak will stay with me all the way through the championship. Tonight I will relax and take my mind away from the game for awhile. But come tomorrow; expect me to deliver nothing but my very best.”

Over at the TV table, Guinness World Series of Pool Ambassador Yang put on a special show for the home crowd with a nail-biting come-from-behind victory against the 2007 US Open 9Ball Champion Shane Van Boening, conquering the American with a 8 – 7 result.

On the brink of elimination at 7 – 5 in favor of the American, things did not look good for Yang who was struggling with his form for most of the contest. But through an ironic stroke of good fortune in the 13th rack, Yang finally got the lucky break he was waiting for.  Digging deep and drawing inspiration from the capacity crowd, the local favourite turned the tables to his favor and incredibly strung three straight unanswered points to overtake Van Boening and claim the top of the hill.

Amidst the cheers and with adrenalin still churning through his veins, Yang said: “This was a very big win for me. I actually almost lost hope. But the support of the crowd really inspired me and I am happy to deliver this win for them. Definitely, I will aim for nothing less than the championship because I want to make my country proud.”

Joining Orcollo and Yang in the quarterfinal round is a powerhouse cast of pool aces.

Germany's Thorsten Hohmann in action in Jakarta today!

Thorsten Hohmann Still Alive In Double Elimination Stage

Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann kept his championship hopes alive after beating Indonesian bet M. Fadly, 6 – 3 in the loser’s bracket of the preliminary rounds of the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool – 10Ball Challenge here at the Mal Taman Anggrek Jakarta, Indonesia.

Relegated to the loser’s side after suffering a lopsided defeat from another Indonesian M. Rahmansyah, 1 – 6, at the double eliminations opener, Hohmann needed to win the match against Fadly to remain in the prestigious tournament organized by ESPN STAR Sports.

Both competitors noticeably felt under pressure as Hohmann and Fadly notched unforced errors early on in the match with the German slightly edging out the Indonesian, 2 – 1.

However, a break and run-out at the 4th rack seemingly gave Hohmann a burst of much needed confidence as he pounced on the errors produced by a tentative Fadly to emerge first on the hill, 5 - 1.

Egged on by a supportive homecrowd, Fadly managed to pocket some difficult rail shots in the 7th and 8th frames to get back in contention, 3 – 5.

But just as things were looking up for the local bet, another miscue on the 5ball center pocket attempt saw the German back in the driver’s seat and clean up the table to seal the Indonesian’s fate.

With his win, Hohmann earned the right to challenge Chinese-Taipei’s boy wonder Ko Pin-Yi, who lost against American Shane Van Boening in their winner’s bracket meeting, 2 – 6, for a ticket to advance to the single knock out round.

Asked about how he felt about his performance in the tournament so far and what he thinks of his chances against Ko Pin-Yi Hohmann said: “ Honestly my game is a little rusty as I took some time away from competition. That’s why I think I’ve been having a hard time finding my rhythm. In this race to 6 double elimination format, mistakes really take its toll as you have to be on top of your game from the very beginning. Ko is a very tough competitor and I believe we’ll match up pretty well. Of course I’ll try my best and hopefully I can make it into the next round.”

Meanwhile, Filipino favorites in current world no. 2 Lee Vann Corteza, former 8ball and 9ball champion Ronato Alcano, 2007 SEA games 9Ball gold medalist Antonio Gabica, Raymond Cruz and Victor Arpilleda, who all suffered defeats at the winner’s bracket were still waiting to start their loser’s bracket encounters as of press time. In contrast, 6 other Pinoys have conquered their respective assignments to barge through to the next round.

Souquet Dominates World Series of Pool Double Elimination Round

World no. 3 Ralf Souquet of Germany positioned himself as the man to beat at the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool – 10Ball Challenge as he successfully completed his sweep of the preliminary rounds – dominating Indonesian representative Jajuli, 6 – 1 in the group opener and edging out long-time Filipino rival Ronato Alcano, 6 – 4, in the winner’s bracket to barge into the single elimination round here at the Mal Taman Aggrek in Indonesia, Jakarta.

Raring to redeem himself after finishing a disappointing 17th at last July’s 2010 World 9Ball Championships, Souquet quickly dispatched his Indonesian opponent in the morning session to enter the winner’s bracket to face Alcano, who had earlier seemed to be in top-form himself when he cruised to an easy 6 – 3 victory over another local bet, William Tanizar.

In the evening session, all eyes were on the highly anticipated rematch between Souquet and Alcano from their epic 2006 WPA 9ball Finals battle in Manila where the Filipino emerged victorious.

Right from the start, the German seemed to be more focused as he managed to capitalize on the Filipino’s errors in the first rack to jump to a 2 – 0 lead. But a silly miss by Souquet on a 1ball corner pocket attempt at the 2nd rack saw Alcano run out the table to get back into the action at 1 – 2.

The middle stages of the contest proved to be a treat for the capacity crowd at the competition venue as both contenders engaged in one heated safety battle after the next. However, it was Alcano who cracked first as he uncharacteristically missed a routine shot on the 10ball in the 5th rack. With momentum clearly on Souquet’s side, he raced to an overwhelming 5 – 1 advantage in the race to 6 contest.

But the champion within Alcano simply refused to give up. Giving Souquet a taste of his own medicine, he played the safety game beautifully to force the German into a difficult shot on the yellow 1ball at the 7th rack. The resulting foul allowed the lanky Filipino to chain three successive run-outs of his own to catch-up at 4 – 5.

Ultimately, it was a case of too little too late for the Filipino as Souquet, breaking for the match, calmly stepped up to the table to orchestrate a brilliant series of bank shots to shut-out his opponent and emerge on top of the hill.

The action in Day 1 proved to be an exhilarating start to the prestigious tournament organized by ESPN STAR Sports. As expected, the top seeds showcased incredible pocketing skills to rule the double-elimination round.
