Thorsten Hohmann Elected to Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame

The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Hall of Fame will welcome a three-time world champion and the winningest straight-pool player of a generation to the Hall of Fame class of 2021. The United States Media Association (USBMA) today announced that German-born Thorsten Hohmann has earned induction into the sport’s most prestigious club.
Hohmann, who will turn 42 on July 14, narrowly edged Philippines star Dennis Orcullo in voting and will enter the Greatest Players wing of the BCA Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Norfolk Sheraton Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Va., in conjunction with the 2021 International Open. In addition to Hohmann, the 2021 BCA Hall of Fame Banquet will also feature the formal induction ceremony for women’s world champion Kelly Fisher. Fisher was elected to the hall in 2020, but no ceremony was held due to COVID-19 restrictions.
“You’re pranking me, right?,” Hohmann said when informed of his election. The response was not unexpected from Hohmann, who despite his impressive resume has been routinely passed over in conversations about the best players of his generation.
“The past 10 years I haven’t been as visible,” Hohmann admitted. “I know that when the question of who the greatest players are my name doesn’t come up immediately. The Matchroom events are big exposure for players and in the last 10 years I’ve rarely been invited. I always seemed to have to battle other Germans. There was Oliver, then Ralf and now Filler. It was always difficult to get the spot they hold for Germans. So, I don’t have a chance to win some of those titles and those things make a difference in people’s perceptions.

US Open Player Entries Open July 2
Player entries for the 2021 US Open Pool Championship will open at 9am ET on Friday, July 2, with the entry fee lowered to $750 per player for the event, which will take place at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City from September 13-18.
The prize fund will remain at the 2019 total of $300,000, meaning Matchroom is committing an additional $64,000 to the added prize money, which now stands at over $100,000. Sticking with tradition, previous US Open Champions will be offered a free entry to the event.
The tournament format has been revised for 2021. The tournament will now benefit from global live TV coverage on every day of the event, with broadcast hours increasing from 24 in 2019 to 54 for 2021.
Double elimination will remain in effect down to the last 16, when single elimination will again take over. However, the double elimination stage will now be played over four days. September 13 & 14 will feature the first round as well as the next two rounds on the losers’ side and the first round on the winners’ side. All matches in these rounds will be race to 9.
All subsequent matches will be race to 11, except the final which will continue as a race to 13. Matches will be played across 33 tables for the first three days and eight tables for the concluding rounds of the double elimination stage. Tables will half to four for the last 16 and two for the quarter-finals, with both of those rounds played on Friday, September 17. The semi-finals and final will all take place on the main TV Arena table on September 18.
Emily Frazer, Managing Director of Matchroom Multi Sport, said: “Following our exciting partnership with Caesars Entertainment and Atlantic City Sports Commission we are confident for a successful US Open Pool Championship event this September 13th.

 | Dynamic Billiard Sankt Johann im Pongau Open 2021 |
Joshua Filler wins the Dynamic Billard St. Johann i.P. Open 2021
In an epic battle, the „Killer-Filler“ Joshua Filler (GER) took down Mario He (AUT) with 9:8.
The final match was contested between Mario He and Joshua Filler. It was broadcast LIVE on Austrian TV ORF+. The local Organizer, Theo Riedlecker has together with the Austrian Federation ÖPBV and its Press Officer, Andreas Kronlachner, once more done a great job in organising LIVE TV for the tournament’s mens final.

Mario He drew first blood in the final match. He broke and ran the table with a dreamlike certainty to get a 1:0 lead over Filler. Filler started his game after that and had to throw in a few safety shots, which he managed perfectly, so that he could equalise at 1:1. After winning his next break rack, Mario He also managed to snatch a rack from Filler in order to gain a 3:1 advantage. He had the big chance to gain a three point lead over Filler, but the German didn’t like that idea too much. Filler stopped He’s victory march and took another rack to make the score 2:3. Again, Mario He managed to win a few racks in a row and pull away with 6:2. But Filler stuck to him like chewing gum and could not be shaken off. After twelve racks, the scoreline was 7:5 for Mario He.

Ouschan Is Two-Time World Pool Champion

Albin Ouschan is the new World Pool Champion after beating Omar Al Shaheen 13-9 in a high-quality final in Milton Keynes, England to claim the title for a second time.
The Austrian is also now the Matchroom Pool World No.1 having collected his second title of the year; he won Predator Championship League Pool in March.
“When you say two-time World Champion, it sounds amazing, and it is really,” said Ouschan, who takes home $50,000 as well as the newly commissioned World Championship trophy, which also has his name engraved from 2016.
“In the last rack, you just want to be as easy as possible on every shot so I was very happy that he went for the 1-ball after I called push out. He left me a tricky shot but after I made it everything was open and I was ready to take it home.”

Ouschan To Face Al Shaheen For World Title
Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport
Albin Ouschan will face Omar Al Shaheen in the World Pool Championship final at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.
Ouschan defeated David Alcaide 11-4 in his semi final before Al Shaheen came from 6-1 down to beat Hungary’s Oliver Szolnoki 11-9 in front of spectators to book his place in the final.
Alcaide drew first blood in the opening semi-final after Ouschan scratched on the break having won the lag. The Spaniard was soon 2-0 up but left the 6 in the jaws allowing his opponent to half the deficit. Ouschan moved 5-2 ahead before Alcaide scored again, and despite a nicely banked 1 in the ninth from Ouschan, Alcaide took that rack to trail 5-4.
However, from there the Austrian was flawless. A 99% pot success rate for the match was reflective of just how well Ouschan played to close out an 11-4 win and book his place in a third World Championship final.
“I started where I ended the match against Skyler in the quarter-finals,” said Ouschan. “I played almost a perfect set, just a few safety errors, and overall I am very happy. It was the best I have played this week and I hope I can continue like this.
“I had a good feeling, I was playing well and feeling good and I was ready to go this morning. It is great to be in the final, it is my third time, and I hope I can take it home.”

Down To Final Four At World Pool Championship
Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport
Albin Ouschan will meet David Alcaide before Omar Al Shaheen faces Oliver Szolnoki in the semi-finals of the World Pool Championship after all four won their quarter-finals on Wednesday evening at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.
Ouschan came from 5-3 down to defeat Skyler Woodward 11-5 in the evening’s second televised quarter-final, after Alcaide had beaten Max Lechner 11-4 in his quarter-final. The two met in the Predator Championship League Pool final earlier this year, when Ouschan took home the title.
Woodward was 3-1 and then 5-3 up before a 2-ball rattled in the jaws to allow Ouschan a chance, and it was a chance he took. The Austrian settled at the table and made some great shots along the way; a great jumped 8 helped get Ouschan level and an incredible 1/9 carom took him 9-5 up before he closed out the match without Woodward scoring another rack.
“I didn’t feel that well at the beginning, I was maybe a bit stiff and cold and had to get used to the TV table again because it is a little bit different to the outside table,” said Ouschan. “After the match, I can think that the 8-ball jump shot gave me a great confidence boost.
“I played well in the end but it could have gone the other way that he runs away with the score, but I am glad he didn’t and I am happy to be in the semis. I am playing David, he played a great tournament, so I hope it will be a good match and I will expect that and try my best. I saw his match against Max Lechner and he played a great match, so I will have to try my best.”

Szolnoki Knocks Van Boening Out Of World Pool Championship
Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport
Oliver Szolnoki came from 5-1 down to defeat Shane van Boening 11-5 in the last 16 of the World Pool Championship at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.
The 24-year-old Hungarian, who had practiced with Van Boening prior to travelling to the event, will now face Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz in this evening’s quarter-finals after the Spaniard beat Naoyuki Oi 11-7.
“I started very shaky and made many mistakes,” said Szolnoki. “I settled down a little bit but he couldn’t find his break and broke dry many times. I figured out a break that worked so could make break and runs and dominate the racks by playing safety and getting shots from him. I didn’t give him many chances.
“I was really happy to play a straight shot on the 9 at the end because I was really nervous, but I left one which I knew I could not miss.”

Oi Defeats Filler, Van Boening Marches On At World Pool Championship
Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport
Naoyuki Oi knocked Joshua Filler out of the World Pool Championship at the last 32 stage, while Americans Shane van Boening and Skyler Woodward won through to the last 16 at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.
Oi inflicted an 11-6 defeat on Germany’s Filler, a recent World Cup of Pool winner and the 2018 World Champion. That sets up the popular Japanese player with a last 16 match against Spain’s Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz, who ended the dreams of four-time Mosconi Cup winner Karl Boyes, who was beaten 11-3.
“I am really happy with the win, it was the best match I have played in the tournament and I am looking forward to the next round,” said Sanchez-Ruiz. “I knew it would be a tough match but I played perfect at the beginning of the match. This is the most important tournament of them all and it would be a dream to win it.”

Defending Champion Gorst Out Of World Pool Championship
Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport
Fedor Gorst’s World Pool Championship defence came to an end at the hands of USA’s Skyler Woodward, who came from 8-4 down to win 11-8 at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.
After a shaky start, Woodward was starring down the barrel of defeat but settled himself and won seven consecutive racks, keeping Gorst largely rooted to his seat and unable to stem the tide of the two-time Mosconi Cup MVP, who will now face Denmark’s Bahram Lotfy in the last 32.
“When I was 8-4 down I was waiting for a chance to take control and that’s what I did,” said Woodward. “I knew I couldn’t give him a chance because he was three games away so if I gave him a game off my break he was two away and I would be out of here.
“Having the race to 11 was nice, because at 8-4 if he was on the hill it would have been a little different thinking from me if it was race to 9. I have to keep focussed, keep doing what I am doing and I can go deep.”
