Down To Last 64 At World Pool Championship

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

The World Pool Championship is down to the last 64 after the conclusion of the double elimination group stage at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes, live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Among the high-profile casualties of the group stage were USA’s two-time Mosconi Cup winner Tyler Styer, former US Open Champion Corey Deuel and former World Champion Mika Immonen, who suffered a 7-9 defeat to Ralf Souquet.

Three of the eight female entries have advanced to the last 64 including Women’s World Champion Kelly Fisher. Germany’s Veronika Ivanovskaia went through with wins over Nick Malia and Tim De Ruyter, while Jasmin Ouschan won a hill-hill thriller against Mark Gray from 7-1 down to beat the Brit to a place in the knockout stages.

US Open Champion Joshua Filler came through the losers side of the group brackets win a 9-6 win over Sergey Lutsker, and Mosconi Cup MVP Jayson Shaw also made it through thanks to a 9-6 win over fellow Brit Imran Majid.

Shaw will now face Shane van Boening in a mouth-watering Last-64 clash, which will follow Fedor Gorst against Skyler Woodward on the TV table.

Gomez Survives Brave Ouschan Fightback At World Pool Championship

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Roberto Gomez defeated Albin Ouschan 9-7 to advance to the last 64 of the World Pool Championship at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes, but only after a brilliant fightback from the Austrian, who had been 8-0 down.

Ouschan is still alive in the double elimination event and will now face a sudden-death play-off to qualify for the straight-knockout stage. After getting on the board at 8-0 down, Ouschan would have thought his fightback was brief until Gomez missed an 8, and from then the 2016 World Champion set to work on winning six consecutive racks before a missed 6 at just one behind gave his Filipino opponent the chance to win.

Also on the TV table on Sunday evening was US No.1 Shane van Boening, who got his tournament off with a 9-3 win over Petr Urban. He’ll now face fellow American Oscar Dominguez for a place in the last 64.

Germany’s Veronika Ivanovskaia shocked Greece’s Nick Malai with a 9-7 victory, the first win for one of the tournament’s eight female entrants. Ivanovskaia’s compatriot Joshua Filler also got off to a winning start, beating Belarsus’ Margarite Fefilova.

Gorst Fights Back To Get World Pool Championship Defence Off To Winning Start

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Fedor Gorst survived a huge scare in the opening match of his World Pool Championship defence as he fought back from 5-1 and 6-2 down to defeat Estonia’s Mark Magi 9-7 at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.

Jayson Shaw found himself 6-0 down against World Under-17 champion Moritz Neuhausen of Germany. But the former US Open champion and current Mosconi Cup MVP, being watched by European captain Alex Lely, wasn’t going to lie down and began a confident fightback, winning eight racks without reply. The German youngster cut the deficit to 8-7 with Shaw on the hill but the Scot wrapped up the match 9-7.

There were also opening session wins for Predator Championship League Pool winner Albin Ouschan, who beat Fabio Petroni 9-5, and Finland’s Mika Immonen who beat Kristina Tkach 9-4 having been 3-1 down early on.

The World Pool Championship opens with a double elimination group stage, so those who have already won one match are one away from reaching the last 64. Those who lost their opening fixtures play again on Monday, against another player who has suffered defeat and the loser will be eliminated.

Fedor Gorst will begin his World Pool Championship defence against Estonia’s World Cup semi-finalist Mark Magi after the draw was made for the event, which runs from June 6-10 at Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes.

Among the other standout matches for the Double Elimination Group Stage is recent World Pool Masters champion Alex Kazakis against Women’s World Champion Kelly Fisher. Predator Championship League Pool winner Albin Ouschan faces Italian Mosconi Cup legend Fabio Petroni, while former World Champion Mika Immonen will be up against rising star Kristina Tkach.

Players were seeded with defending champion Fedor Gorst seeded 1, and the remaining 63 seeded determined by the WPA World Ranking. Seeded players were randomly drawn against unseeded players. Since the draw has been made, some players have had to withdraw due to travel issues. Any withdrawals are replaced by players from the waiting list.

Redemption For Kazakis As He Wins Dafabet World Pool Masters

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

FINAL
Alex Kazakis 9–0
Shane van Boening

Semi-Finals
Alex Kazakis 7-6
Eklent Kaci
Joshua Filler 6-7 Shane van Boening

Alex Kazakis banished painful memories of losing the last Dafabet World Pool Masters final as he whitewashed Shane van Boening 9-0 to lift the 2021 title at Europa Sports Park in Gibraltar, the biggest margin of defeat in a Masters final and the first final whitewash.

Kazakis lost position on the 9-ball against David Alcaide in the 2019 final and at hill-hill was rooted to his seat as the Spaniard banked a dramatic 9 for the title. This time, though, there was no such drama in the final – that had come in a 7-6 semi-final win over Eklent Kaci – as the Greek controlled the table and did to Van Boening what the American himself had done to so many others when he won back-to-back Masters titles in 2014 and ’15.

“I can’t really believe it,” said an emotional Kazakis. “It is amazing. Everything went my way from the start to the end of the final. The big moment was in the semi-finals; I didn’t play well, I was nervous, and I was lucky that Kaci didn’t really play that well. It was the luckiest match I ever won. To go into the final with that momentum, I had nothing to lose.

“When I finished my semi-final I went to the hotel, called my coach, and I told him, ‘I’m dogging it again’. I believe so much in myself but something inside me, I had these bad lucks and bad rolls in the Mosconi Cup last match in 2018, I have the 9 ball with Alcaide here, then also the semi-final of the World 9-Ball Championship with Joshua [Filler] where I had a chance to go to a final and I screwed up. All these things happened in about five months.

Filler To Meet Van Boening In Dafabet World Pool Masters Semi-Finals

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport

Quarter-Finals
Joshua Filler 7-5
Denis Grabe
Max Lechner 4-7 Shane van Boening
Alexander Kazakis 7–3
Skyler Woodward

Joshua Filler will meet Shane van Boening in the semi-finals of the Dafabet World Pool Masters, while Alexander Kazakis will face Eklent Kaci at the Europa Sports Complex, Gibraltar.

Filler defeated Denis Grabe 7-5 in the afternoon session of finals day, before Van Boening beat Max Lechner 7-4 in his semi-final. Kazakis, runner up at the last Dafabet World Pool Masters, continues his quest for redemption after beating an out-of-sorts Skyler Woodward 7-3 and will now face Eklent Kaci in the semi-finals.

Grabe and Filler shared the first eight racks of their match to be tied at 4-4 in the race to 7. An errant Filler safety gave his Estonian opponent the initiative but he missed the 7 with a chance to reach the hill and Filler was able to level at 5-5. Grabe then fouled in the next rack and Filler was first to the hill, from where he was able to close out a 7-5 win.

“I made a couple of mistakes but in the end I won and that is what matters,” said Filler. “I was feeling nervous through the match and managed to win. Pia told me during some breaks to believe in myself, and I kept going.

INCREDIBLE KACI BLASTS INTO SEMI-FINALS AT WORLD POOL MASTERS
Kazakis and Van Boening advance to last-eight with dominant performances in Gibraltar

Alexander Kazakis 7-3 Justin Sajich
Fedor Gorst 1-7 Shane van Boening
Quarter-Final
Eklent Kaci 7-0
Niels Feijen

Niels Feijen was almost completely shut out as Eklent Kaci put in a commanding, confident performance to blast into the Dafabet World Pool Masters semi-finals with a 7-0 win over the Dutchman at Europa Sports Complex in Gibraltar.

Earlier in the evening Alexander Kazakis had beaten Australia’s Justin Sajich 7-3 and Shane van Boening had booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 7-1 win over Fedor Gorst. That had looked to be the performance of the night until the quarter-finals began with Kaci storming past Feijen, the man whom he pipped to Mosconi Cup selection last December.

The evening opened with the final two last 16 matches. Sajich was 3-1 ahead against Kazakis but he missed the 9 to go 4-1 up, and Kazakis stole the rack. From there, the Greek didn’t look back. Sajich was all-but locked out as the 2019 runner-up up booked his place in the quarter-finals with a 7-3 victory.

Kazakis will face Skyler Woodward in tomorrow afternoon’s quarter-finals in what will be a repeat of the 2019 semi-final which was won 8-1 by the Greek.

Feijen Through As Lechner And Grabe Advance At Dafabet World Pool Masters

Report by Nick Teale - Matchroom Multi Sport
All photography - ©Taka Wu/Matchroom Multi Sport

Last 16
Maximilian Lechner 7-5 Mieszko Fortunski
Albin Ouschan 3-7 Denis Grabe
Jayson Shaw 6-7 Niels Feijen

Niels Feijen’s quest for a third World Pool Masters title remains on course after a dramatic hill-hill win over Jayson Shaw, while Max Lechner and Denis Grabe are also through to the quarter-finals of the Dafabet World Pool Masters at Europa Sports Complex, Gibraltar.

Feijen missed the 5 at hill-hill against Shaw, before the Mosconi Cup MVP did the same to allow the Dutchman to complete a victory which will see him face Eklent Kaci in the quarter-finals later this evening. Grabe had earlier defeated Albin Ouschan 7-3 to set-up a last-eight clash with Joshua Filler.

The afternoon session had opened with Lechner up against Mieszko Fortunski. After the first four racks were shared, Fortunski extended to a 4-2 lead. Lechner took the 7th and looked sure to level until the 8 refused to go into the tight corner pockets. Instead, Fortunski was leading 5-3.

He wasn’t able to reach the hill in the next, as Lechner took his chance to pull back to 5-4. The Austrian fightback continued as Lechner levelled and then was first to the hill at 6-5. At this point, Fortunski could only watch on as Lechner broke and ran the next rack to book his place in the quarter-finals, where either Fedor Gorst or Shane van Boening will await.

“it was a great match,” said Lechner. “I had a very shaky start at the beginning; the adrenaline kicked in the moment I walked out. I have missed that feeling and I am happy with how the match went.”
