2016 GB9 British Grand Prix

Despite wearing a multitude of hats at this event, including having to make a 4 hour round trip to collect the trophies due to a foul up by UK Mail - we're delighted that Lee Rigby has once again managed to find some time to share with us some terrific photos of the "places and faces" in action at the final GB9 event of the 2016 season.

Thank you Lee - indeed, a big thank you to all the tour staff this year, and good luck for the 2017 GB9 season.

Kremlin Cup 2016 - 10-Ball won by Alex Kazakis - Greece
Report courtesy of the WPA

Alex Kazakis won the Kremlin Cup (10-Ball division) today in Moscow defeating former world champion Thortsen Hohmann 9-6 in the final. Early in the match and trailing 2/3, Kazakis missed an easy 1 ball leaving Hohmann a relatively simple run-out and extend his lead to 4/2. It was thought that losing that rack would be mentally disturbing to Kazakis, but he made the best of any opportunity thereafter and won the remaining racks 7/2. After recouping the deficit, the scores remained even to 6/6, then Kazakis edged away and won the the next three racks. Fair to say that Kazakis enjoyed a good run of the balls, where on the other hand Hohmann couldn’t get a shot at the 1 ball after his break, and each time needed to play a safety. The crunch really came when trailing 6/7, Hohmann played a fantastic shot on the 3 ball only to see the cue ball travel around the table and scratch in the side pocket. Kazakis with ball in hand, cleared up to reach the hill, then gave Hohmann no chance in the final rack to collect a thoroughly deserved first place prize.

The Best in World Prepare for Mosconi Cup

Tuesday-Friday 6-9 December 2016

The World’s Best Prepare for Mosconi Cup

The Mosconi Cup was created in 1994 by Sky Sports to encourage and promote pool playing in the United Kingdom. It was an exhibition pitting the best players in Europe vs. the very best players from the United States. But like most things that are popular, it quickly went from an exhibition, to something serious, to something very prestigious. And now it is a great honor to be on one of two teams that battles it out every year.

It has often been called the Ryder Cup of pool, both for its Europe vs. USA format, but also for the many ups and downs the tournament has taken over the years. In the very early going the two sides were well matched. But in 1996 the United States went on an almost unstoppable run, winning 9 of 10 Cups and establishing themselves as the home of the best pool in the world.

But then in 2007 the pool tables turned, and the Europeans began their own unstoppable run, winning eight of nine, including the last six in a row.

2016 Mosconi Cup - American Five set for London showdown

WITH ALL 28 qualifying events now complete, the team to represent the United States of America at the 23rd annual Mosconi Cup is now finalised and there is one change from the team that last 11-7 at the Tropicana last December. The annual transatlantic showdown takes place at the Alexandra Palace, London from Tuesday 6th to Friday 9th December,

Topping the rankings once again, and by some margin, is Shane Van Boening who will be making his tenth appearance in American colours. He will be joined by Mike Dechaine and Skyler Woodward who came second and third on the ranking respectively.

The two wildcards are the highly experienced Rodney Morris who like Van Boening will be making his tenth appearance, and Justin Bergman who comes into the side for the third time.

American captain Mark Wilson said, “This year we had the strongest effort to date for making the travel squad to London. That very fact speaks to the value of the points ranking tournament system, which in turn, is stimulating progress towards the U.S. return to the once proud stature in billiards played internationally.

SHAW'S THANKFUL REDEMPTION

After several near misses, Scotland's Jayson Shaw wins his biggest tournament to date, capturing the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship with a 13-10 win over Taiwan's Chang Jun Lin.

By Ted Lerner
WPA Press Officer

Jayson Shaw has spent the last year knocking on the door of big time success. Tonight in Kuwait City, he could wait no longer and bashed the door in.

Playing with an air of expectation, the 28 year old Scotsman fulfilled the promise that so many could see coming for the last year, by winning the Kuwait Open 9-ball championship with a well played 13-10 victory over a relentless Chang Jun Lin of Taiwan.

The victory, Shaw’s biggest to date, is the culmination of the Scotsman’s meteoric rise in professional pool over the last 12 months. His American green card in hand, Shaw has traveled the globe in 2016, winning a handful of smaller events, and contending in some of the world’s majors. His 5th place finish in September at the World 9-ball Championship in Doha in August, and his third place finish at the US Open in October were further proof that something special was brewing. Tonight’s win in Kuwait confirmed it. And nobody doubts that this win will propel Shaw to even higher heights in the months and years to come.

The fact that this career defining win came against Chang was surely extra special for Shaw. For it was Chang who stopped Shaw’s charge at the recent US Open, and propelled the Taiwanese into the final where he lost to winner Shane Van Boening.

Chang’s second straight runner up finish in a major will no doubt sting for some time to come, especially because for the second straight time, the Taiwanese was playing lights out pool. Nobody, however, doubts that the 31 year old from Taipei will find major success and soon. The super talented Chang is playing his best pool in years and often looks unstoppable.

SURGING TOWARDS THE FINISH LINE

After a day of dramatic thrillers, Taiwan's Chang Jun Lin leads the charge into the quarterfinals at the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship.

With the biggest prize fund in 9-ball pool this year, the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship predictably attracted as good a collection of the professional games’ best to this Gulf nation of just over 4 million people. And on the third and penultimate day of the sport’s newest event, all that talent and all that promise came to a dramatic head.

It was a day that saw the game’s best engage in one epic battle after the next, with match after match taking unexpected twists, with many going right down to the very last rack, and even the very last ball. 64 players commenced battle at 10am, and when it was over close to midnight, eight warriors were left standing, ready for what surely will be a thrilling showdown to the finish on the final day Saturday.

In one quarterfinal, surprise entrant Marc Bijsterbosch of the Netherlands will face off with 2015 World 9-ball Champion Ko Pin Yi. In another quarterfinal, one of the sport’s hottest players , Scotland’s Jayson Shaw, will try to keep his trajectory flying higher as he does battle with Filipino veteran Warren Kiamco.

The other quarterfinal features what looks to be a titanic showdown of two of pool’s best, as the current World 9-ball Champion, Austria’s Albin Ouschan, squares off with Taiwan’s Chang Jun Lin, who arguably has played the best pool all week.

The last quarterfinal will feature Filipino journeyman Roland Garcia taking on white hot Dang Jinghu of China.

The quarterfinals, which begin at 11am Kuwait time(GMT +3) will be race to 11, alternate break.

Although the topsy turvy nature of today’s proceedings would indicate a complete toss up in terms of favorites, several players today let it be known that they intend to be standing in the winner’s circle come Saturday evening.

BATTLE HARDENED HOHMANN SLUGS HIS WAY THROUGH

Two time World 9-ball Champion is all business as the Final 64 knockout rounds take shape at the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship.

By Ted Lerner
WPA Press Officer

Photos By Takayama Takao

This Gulf nation of 4.2 million people is considered one of the richest countries on earth, a place where big business thrives. And big business is exactly what the Kuwait Open 9-ball Championship will be all about for the next two days, as the race to 9-ball pool’s biggest prize of the year kicks into high gear.

The stellar field of 128 of the world’s best players that began battle yesterday at the Al Ardiya Youth Center in Kuwait City has now been cut in half to 64. The always difficult and dreaded double elimination group stages are now history, and from here on in over the course of the next two days, all matches will be single elimination knockout. The player that wins six matches will take home this brand new title, and 50,000 tax fee US dollars.

With a total of $275,000 on offer, the inaugural Kuwait Open 9-ball naturally attracted a field that was as good as anyone will ever see in this game. Several big names bit the proverbial dust today, --among them Dennis Orcollo, Mika Immonen, Daryl Peach, Rodney Morris and Nick Van Den Berg. But the field that remains has some of the biggest names the game has to offer, along with plenty of rising stars, and upstarts who crashed this prestigious Middle Eastern pool party.

It all came into shape after yet another day of tense action, as all 64 matches today were played on the losers’ side of the group stage brackets. That meant all matches were do or die, with one small roll of the ball possibly meaning either quick and brutal elimination, or perhaps a wild ride all the way to 9-ball glory. Pool is perhaps the cruelest and hardest sport to earn one’s living at, and paydays like this don’t come along every day. It’s no wonder the tension in the arena throughout today’s play was palpable.

Former World 9-ball Champion Mika Immonen had high hopes coming into the event this week. But after a stinging 9-8 loss to American Hunter Lumbardo yesterday, the flying Finn had to win two today. Immonen handily won his first match and was a prohibitive favorite against 18 year old debutante Aton Raga of the Philippines, who was playing in his very first international tournament.
