The World’s Best Prepare for Mosconi Cup

The Mosconi Cup was created in 1994 by Sky Sports to encourage and promote pool playing in the United Kingdom. It was an exhibition pitting the best players in Europe vs. the very best players from the United States. But like most things that are popular, it quickly went from an exhibition, to something serious, to something very prestigious. And now it is a great honor to be on one of two teams that battles it out every year.

It has often been called the Ryder Cup of pool, both for its Europe vs. USA format, but also for the many ups and downs the tournament has taken over the years. In the very early going the two sides were well matched. But in 1996 the United States went on an almost unstoppable run, winning 9 of 10 Cups and establishing themselves as the home of the best pool in the world.

But then in 2007 the pool tables turned, and the Europeans began their own unstoppable run, winning eight of nine, including the last six in a row.

The 2016 Mosconi Cup is being held in London’s Alexandra Palace for this first time, and it’s no surprise that Betways arguably the best odds for the match have the Europeans as 2/5 favorites to win its seventh straight, and even the overall series at 11-11.

Niels Feijen from The Netherlands is a four-time tournament MVP, including last year when he won four of his five matches and all three of his singles competitions. And he will once again be anchoring the European team. Although Feijen isn’t the Europeans top qualifier as we head toward the Mosconi Cup next month. That honor belongs to Jayson Shaw of Scotland, who just won the title at the Kuwait Open. And that follows his 3rd place finish at the U.S. Open last month.

The Americans, of course, can never be counted out. But with a veteran like Feijen and the hot-hand of Shaw leading the way, Europe is a good bet to keep its streak alive.
