Apparently, this is the game that over 70% of the Chinese play... Not Snooker, not 9-Ball, but something in between.

From Pro9'er Yokita...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpDSg40ZHh0

"Event: 2012 Chinese 8-Ball International Masters (Changchun Leg)
Match-up: Li Hewen vs Stephen Hendry
Date: April 18th, 2012
Venue: Changchun, Jilin Province, China
Referee: Wang Zhongyao

The game is neither American 8-ball nor British 8-ball. It is Chinese 8-ball, officially called "Chinese billiards" by Chinese Billiards & Snooker Association (CBSA). Based on 2011 CBSA data, about 71% of the players in China play Chinese 8-ball -- much more than those playing 9-ball (16%) and snooker (12%).

Chinese 8-ball is a weird pool game. The size of table is the same size with standard 9-ball pool, but its pocket cut is like snooker while the size of balls is similar to carom. Most distinct part is that its reaction to cushion rail is astonishingly nothing like any other cuesports tables."

Do you think it would catch on here?

Theres a event in china in November run by ex snooker pro Andy lee who used to live in Leicester. 32 man event with 16 invites. Darren, Melling, mick hill Gareath potts, efren and Strickland all been invited. There a qualifiers for the 16 Asian players.

If the balls are similar to Carom that would put them around the 2 7⁄16" mark. It's going to be tough for UK8B specialists to get used to that coming from a 1 7/8" cue ball!

I'm not sure that I like the game either as it doesn't seem to bring anything new to the table!

Mark Williams was talking to me and Raj about it a few weeks ago, seems Hendry is the ambassador of it now. Sounds like a good game, Raj was wetting his pants over it, then again we all know what Raj is like

The game itself looks pretty good.

I much prefer the bigger balls and the 9 foot table. On the American Equipment 8 ball is not a great game as the run outs are too easy because there are so many choices and ways to get position unlike rotation games which I always prefer on that equipment.

Then there's 8 ball on the toy town table and the tiny cue ball the english play on - less said about that the better.

But on this equipment 8 ball has some credibility again for the first time since the IPT folded.

As expected really Hendry just plays it like snooker on a smaller table and hasn't really got much clue about playing pool. He's sticking with a snooker cue and it's obvious there are shots he just can't play, in start contrast to Li He Wen who makes it look a lot easier with his Predator.

I see Mick and Darren doing very well at this, the Asians are obviously their biggest competitors and Hendry is just there to get the interest going, which he will surely do.

Great... Lets split the 'massive' cue sports player pool up into even more games... By the year 2040 there will be 500 different world championships, each with a $1000 dollar prize pool

9 ft snooker tables, i meant.
3/4 snooker leagues Mon and Tues, lots of pubs and clubs have them.
Dont know how theyd play with bigger balls though.

You can buy numbered balls through 1 - 15 in 2 1/16" size and these would be perfect for 8 Ball on a Snooker table!

As far as I can tell, Chinese 8 Ball is just American 8 Ball on tighter pockets which is the way that the game should be played.

English 8 Ball isn't a bad game either but it could certainly be a lot better. The cueball should be the same size as the other balls (2") and the cut of the pocket should be improved as all too often I've sliced a ball and it hasn't left the rail, only to jaw anyway despite playing not much harder than pocket speed!

In the video of Hendry playing Chinese 8-ball on Youtube it looks like they're playing with 2/14 inch balls on a 9ft snooker table

You're probably right Matt. I used to mess about with 2 1/4" Pool balls on a Snooker table but the pockets wouldn't allow a ball that was frozen to the rail to drop. Maybe what they're actually playing on is a very generous 9ft Snooker table.

The pockets might be bigger than a snooker table, but my first reaction was, it's just a 9ft snooker table
