I've read through the standardized rules for 8 ball and have a question about rule 4.2 the call shot rule
is this a widely used rule?
what effect does it have on the pace of the game if every non obvious shot needs to be called?

Only takes a couple of seconds to call your shot, so doesn't really slow the game down

Its the same manner as playing Straight Pool, you gotta nominate the ball you intend to make. If you're looking to bank a ball into the side, the correect calling is.e.g. "12 ball, cross side", if you're going to bank a ball 2 rails, and into the other side pocket, then the correct call would be "12ball, twice cross side", same as it would be in bank pool. The call shot rule is mostly use when playing non-obvious shots like combinations, caroms, banks and kicks, when attempting to make a ball, but it is best to use the call shot at all times Willie
