Riley's used to be a great venue, its almost like a poker club than a pool and snooker club now though. clubs have gone down hill over the last few years in my opinion..... Thats Rileys though, these days. They'll push whatever makes them the most money, they are a business after all and i'm guessing they make more money on beer/food than they do on from the pool tables. Sadly pool will continue to suffer unless you're lucky enough like riggers and you have an understand club manager.

Start the thread and see what happenes and also you can ask BigDave to make it a sticky thread (If possible), as it is a topic that includes everyone
Willie That's a good idea Willie. Thanks. Ok guys this is great! I've started a thread "What Do You Want From A Good Pool Bar?" If you've got the time please let rip and tell us what you'd like. All your comments are really appreciated and what you say may help change pool in this country. Does anyone know any other websites that have pool forums like this one. So I can ask the same question and get answers from different angles. If you don't think we should mention other websites on here you could pm me the links. Thanks to everyone. Phil.

I don't know of any other site in the UK worth bothering with for American Pool so you've come to the right place. The english pool boys are over at UK8ball but they're all a bit crazy there Can I ask you to explain more about what your project is all about?

Hi Riggers,
I'm involved with a company that wants to start quality pool bars in the UK.
These bars will be geared more towards people who want to have drink and a social game of pool than someone who wants to hire a table for an hour in the corner of a pool hall.
Kind of what people do down the pub except with better tables, service and environment. At the moment we are thinking more towards American pool. Or as I like to call it… "Pool".
I don’t want to say too much at this stage because 1. Confidentiality and 2. I want to hear what you guys want without any influence from what we think.
Thanks for the English site. Their point of view is also greatly welcome.
Phil.

American pool is the future so don't bother with the english poolers and their silling marbles game UK Pool badly needs a seriously good pool club with quality tables. Good luck with your venture.

Hi Phil
I am the elusive girl that everyone referring to. Sorry I did not return your call, I have been a bit busy but will be able to ring you soon I promise. My research was on cheating and fair play in cue sports so I don't know if I will be much use to you. Let me know if you would still like to hear from me if you want. Also, a general message: I am now living in Colchester and none of my friends enjoy pool quite as much as me, I wanted to start a new topic but didn't know how, if anyone lives around the Colchester area then let me know if you want to meet up for some pool.

Hi laura, I would indeed still like to talk to you. I tried to call you today but no reply. I'll keep trying or you can call me and I'll call you back. Even if your thesis can't help I have some question to ask female pool players if you wouldn't mind. Phil. Another general message. I am looking for pool players to answer 5 mins of questions. Even if you don’t play but maybe would like to take it up or used to play and don’t play any more for some reason. Especially if you are female…! ( that’s not for my benefit – we are trying to make female friendly pool playing evironment). If you wouldn't mind let me know and I could call you on a land line. Thanks.

Phil. Hi Phil, Unfortunately I think you've got your sampling a bit mixed up here for your brief. The majority of posters on this site are serious american pool players. As such, and as pointed out above, they're likely to have very different wants and needs from a pool hall. People serious about the sport are a small minority compared to the number of people who walk through the doors of places like Rileys with very different priorities. So IMHO your canvassing a small (and not very profitable) minority of your clients potential clientele. We'd all like to see more quality (in terms of playing conditions) pool halls, run by understanding staff, but clearly Rileys business model is not based on that. However much we dislike it, as others have pointed out it says something about where the profitability lies. Even if you are looking to understand a more high end niche market then I don't think serious pool players are your target demographic. For many on here the term 'pool bar' is an oxymoron! Good luck with it all. Jonathan.
