Does anyone buy the more expensive version of petrol?
You know, the one which has higher octane, and contains chemicals which clean the engine etc...
Does it work, does anyone ever buy it, or is it just a way the petrol stations can make a few extra quid per fill up from customers who want to look after their cars a bit better?
( And before you say anything - this is the non-pool forum... So there! )

Yes I do, my engine's had some work done on it and it's mapped to run on higher octane fuel. If I put normal fuel in it runs like a bag of trash, probably get about 3-4 mpg better on the good stuff as well. Most cars are mapped to run on poor quality fuel, worse than you can buy in this country so doesn't make much if any difference.

Higher octane fuel gives you only more mpg. It wont improove your car performance. If we talking about diesel then my advise is not to put better diesel if your car has problems with injectors or CR pump. Better diesel is only to maintain your engine but not fix problems. It can only make it worst.

Dont get me wrong BDK if you put better diesel once every four times then is ok. It will helps to clean your parts and pump so is nothing wrong using better diesel but too often its only throwing money away.

That sounds like a pretty sensible compromise actually.

i used cheap "supermarket" diesel twice in a row and had problems with my engine as the "performance Restricted" warning came on (limiting me to a top speed of 40MPH) I only use the Better fuel now. wouldn't advise using cheaper fuel in a modern car as most manufactures now recommend using Premium Grade Diesel ONLY!!!!! it cost around 6 to 8% more but I get up to 10% more mpg false economy not to use it

Sounds like you might have a "supercar" or something Hinge... What are you driving? This is just a 2007 BMW 318d - what do you reckon for that?

To protect engines and pumps around 2005-2007year i would recommend put an extra lube with every tank of diesel. When i had 2005 hdi peugeot 407 ive been adding 250ml of 2T motor oil. It makes my engine runs really smooth and quiet. It was because an injectors were designed for more "fat" diesel. When after 2006 diesel become drier it start damaging common rail pumps and injectors as diesel was to dry. This days i have 2012 hdi 2.0 C5 and still use an extra lubricabt 2T elf motor oil just to be safe. Common sense if something hasnt got enough lubrication it will get worn quicker.
