Hi everyone at Pro9 my name is Dave.
Ive been playing 8 ball to a decent standard for years, (I won the friday flyer at reighton recently)
Im entered into the tournament at Barnsley in Dec and am really looking to play alot more 9 ball in the future.
Any advice from you seasoned players would be fantastic. i.e. cues, practise, jump shots etc.....

I would presume you know the difference in the cue's and stuff. You can still use an English pool cue but i would recomend getting an American Pool Cue. You can buy these for £30 upwards.
Also, you can either buy a seperate break and jump cues but you can also buy a break/jump cue that is 3 piece.
I would imagine your potting should be fine as it obviously is a good standard on an English table but i would practice your positioning.
Watch matches on youtube or demonstartions of how to play a good jump shot, thats probably not a bad place for advice.

Best advice is to find someone to practice with and watch them. You're welcome to play me in Barnsley anytime but note the club do not allow brasss ferruled cues on the American tables.

You only gotta learn a few extra things such as kicking, jump shot & the break off shot. The rest you should be able to do with you already being an awesome player ----------------- Regards

Yeh Baggy, if you follow Arfan's advice you'll pick it up quickly and be knocking balls in all over the place because of how big the pockets are and how easy it is. Then you'll realise you need to learn all sorts of stuff if you are to beat an established player at which point you'll find the game is not as easy as you first thought and your game will fall apart because you are trying new things instead of just potting balls. Then you'll put the time in and things will start to get back on track and you'll play the game in a completely different way. it's a cycle we all have to go through. Enjoy phase 1 (thinking it's all so easy and you can't miss) because phase 2 is a rude awakening - ask Dixon

It's a lot harder to win tournaments at 9 ball than 8 ball...ask daz!
And as for knowledge...it's endless.

The pockets are way too big though on the club tables, they should be tighter more like at the DCC ----------------- [ This message was edited by: PC on 2007-11-12 13:28 ]

It's harder because there are more than a select few players that can win a major event at 9 ball but in english 8 ball, only a select few can win for e.g a tour event or tv event. I ain't saying that any tom, thingy & harry can play 9 ball but imho, if you're a good potter & have a good safety game, you're more than half way there to playing the game at the highest level. ----------------- Regards

You might be half way there to having a *half* decent game I agree but you'd be a long way from having a major tournament winning game. So Baggy, if you want to have a half decent game unfortunately your english 8 ball ability means you are only half way there If you want to learn the other half it'll cost you a few tenners in sets against me in Barnsley I'll give you 4 start race to 15 pal. That'll teach ya some stuff! (Edit - Oops Shir's logon again! I doubt very much you would get that offer from Shir ) [ This message was edited by: shir on 2007-11-12 19:25 ]

Im a relative newby to 9 ball compared to many. I have been playing for a couple of years, but only 6 mths in serious tournament play.
In my opinion (for what its worth) positional play and use of spin is the most important aspect of 9 ball. The amount of times I have missed an easy ball because I have been out of position slightly and needed to put more power or spin on a shot to get to the next ball.
If u watch the top players it is amazing how they can move the cue ball effortlessly with little power, but mega spin.
In order to compete on the GB9 tour next year and to improve I have devised some practice routines to try and hone my cue action and to learn how to get from A to B on the table.
So my advice is practice alone certain shots and routines and then play people better than you so you can learn.
Try entering a tournament (Nottingham on 18th if entry still open - or Barnsley 1 and 2 of December). You will then be able to watch the seasoned players compete and learn the right techniques from those players.
9 ball can be frustrating but also can be a great game and the players are a good bunch of lads and lasses in my opinion.
