I'm planning on organising 2 tournaments to be named the 2007 midlands 9/10 ball championship.
I would like to hear views from other players as to the best way to run this as i would like it to be as successful as possible.
The idea i have in mind at the moment is:
Saturday 4th August 2007 Midlands 9 ball championship.
Sunday 5th August 2007 Midlands 10 ball championship
Both tournaments: £20 entry in advance, £25 on the day. Prizes based on 64 entrants are paid out to top 8 finishers, winner - £500, 2nd - £250. Trophies for first 3 finishers in each, plus shield to be displayed in rileys coventry with winners name on for next ? years. Winner gets the title of 2007 Midlands 9 or 10 ball champion. Discount entry would be £35 for entry into both tournaments instead of paying £20 for each.
I am thinking of running each tournament with what i believe are called swiss lives? redrawn every round, after 2 defeats you will be eliminated.
Other extras that i will try to sort out:
Free practice/side tournaments on friday evening poker events (not free entry!) Discount hotel accomodation for players entering both events. Free lunch both days (along the lines of burger and chips) for players entering both events.
Would this be successful? Any improvements you could suggest?

Riggers using Shir's logon.... Swiss lives is not easy to run and makes for late finishes because you have to wait for the last match of each round to finish before you can do the draw. Double elim to last 8, race to 8 would be better IMO. If you get a lot more runners than expected or don't have many tables you can reduce the race or make it single elim from last 16. Start as early as you can. Here's a suggestion... Say pay on day players have to register by 09.45. Pre registered players have to arrive by 10.15. Draw at 10.15, play at 10.30 prompt. And players from Barnsley get seeded into last 16 and have to arrive by 12 noon. [ This message was edited by: shir on 2007-06-19 14:30 ]

You make a good point about the time it will take to play the tournament, especially if it is tournaments on two consecutive days.
Do you think the idea of two tournaments over two days would work and attract enough players?
Not going to even consider seeding anybody from barnsley into the last 16, unless the same works in reverse for players from coventry in barnsley events??!!?!

If your going to get 64 runners i would run one comp over two days, anyone who spends the entire day playing the first comp won't fancy the same again the next day. for example play a double eliminator down to the last 8 on each side on the saturday and then draw the winners side against the loses side for the sunday in race to 9 straight k/o, I think this is how the bpppa works but with more players. I think it would work well with 64
Then you could do the same the following weekend for the other comp...

I think simmo you could be right for that being a good idea, but then it is just a clone of the bpppa events as far as format is concerned, i was hoping for it to be something a little different.
Although i dont think there are any two day 10 ball double elim events so it could be good for 10 ball.
How about if each round was a best of 3 sets, with 1st and 3rd set being 9 ball, and 2nd set being 10 ball?

another option if you want it to be different is do group stages on the saturday with the top two from each group going into a draw for the sunday, not sure about switching games in the same comp you will have to get opinions off a good number to c if that would work.
either way i will be there...

Hey SBJ, I have a few things to add onto the suggestions that Simmo and Riggers has made.... Why not just have the 9 ball and the 10ball, 2 completely seperate events, but hold them 1 month apart, with both events being group stages, 8x groups or 8x players on the saturday, with the top 4 from each group, going through to a 1x elim on the sunday? If you're doing it this, way, it allows many players the opprtunity to arrange the time off and to raise the £££, to participate. This is just an add on to the previous suggestions and whatever you decide, I hope that it turns out great for you Willie

Yes that sounds like a great way to run a 2 day comp. Groups on Saturday and single elim on Sunday. You could even do double elim Sunday if you wish. Playing groups all day Saturday should make it easy to judge the finish time. My original suggestions above were around a 1 day tournament because I thought more players would want that having played BPPPA the week before. Also, youmay not be aware because it's not been formally announced yet but you can expect to see a BPPPA on 11/12 August too i.e. BPPPA either side of your comps. So will players want to play 2 days? FYI... Dynamite & Shir are running an english pool masters event (£250 a man) at the new miscues club in Barnsley that weekend. That shouldn't have much of an impact on you though but I thought I'd mention it. I might not be able to make it to yours because I've promised to give Shir some support and it will also be good to go watch the giants of 8 ball.
