interview with imran: from the mosconi site Majid: I Can Handle The Pressure
MOSCONI Cup debutant Imran Majid believes he can handle the pressure of playing in this prestigious competition.
Londoner Majid, 34, is currently ranked at No.3 in Europe and will be part of the European side for the first time in the tournament’s history.
With America having won the title ten times compared to only two successes for Europe, there will be a huge amount of pressure on the new players – Majid (pictured right) and Spaniard David Alcaide.
But Majid, who reached the Last 64 in the recent World Pool Championship in Manila, Philippines, is confident he will perform well at the Cruise Terminal, Rotterdam, Holland.
He said: “I’m looking forward to it and people say it’s a different kind of pressure but I’m going to treat it like any other tournament. I was over the moon when I found out I was in the team and it’s the greatest tournament to play in.
“I’ve got myself to number three in the European rankings that’s why I’m here and I’m here on merit. There’s always going to be extra pressure on new players but it’s how you handle it. I’m pretty seasoned and established to be able to handle the pressure.”
This year Europe have a non-playing coach in the shape of Johan Ruijsink and Majid believes that appointment could be crucial in helping the Europeans secure a rare and much-needed victory.
“We have a couple of secret weapons up our sleeves this year,” said Majid.
“On the first day when we were all together we did some social activities like golf, had dinner together and it’s about getting to know each other and become more of a team. It’s crucial for Europe to win this year and for the Mosconi Cup as an event otherwise it could become a bit boring and monotonous if the US keep winning.”

Hi, Thought I'd get in before anyone else mentioned it but the first time the "Imran towel sharking" was mentioned was during the Imran and Nick vs Rodney and Earl match. Rodney and Earl were discussing it and Rodney said it showed no class and he'd make sure he mentioned it and named names in the interview afterwards. There was no interview as they lost of course but then Archer and finally Corey seemed to climb on the bandwagon. Why is it that Europe have managed to lose year after year with dignity but the second the US get in any sort of a hole they start to complain?! On that theme try finding the old 2002 Mosconi Cup report from Billiards Digest online. It is so bitter you wouldn't believe it! Thanks, Chris. Did anyone else get "irked" by Jim Wych's totally baised pro USA anti Europe stance yesterday? The Euro's couldn't put a foot right according to Wych, and the sun was shining from every American team member.
Nice to see that the Euro team have made Wych eat his words today - I missed the coverage today (working in London) but I would love to have heard Jim eating crow today as Europe showed their true form!
Well done Europe!
At least here at Pro9, WE KNOW that you are the better team - AGAIN!

What's this about Imran's Towel sharking? Was he cleaning his cue when the Americans were taking their shots? I can't imagine Earl Strickland trying anything dodgy like that can you?

Imran wiped his hands with his towel. Just like any player would. Then the americans took a fair few air shots and then missed. Its the Yanks making excuses. It was nothing. Nothing at all. Europe 8-4 up now. Im getting very, very excited!!! ----------------- Twitter: @Darren_Foord [ This message was edited by: Dazza on 2006-12-09 16:42 ]

Hello, In fact it wasn't even that serious. The Americans made the shot after he'd supposedly sharked them anyway so they can't even claim that it made them miss a ball! David Alcaide and Imran have amazed me. They've played out of their skins and should be a cert for the team next year regardless of performance between now and then I think. Pick the players who can handle Mosconi pressure which is so different to normal tournament pressure I reckon and they can clearly handle it! Thanks, Chris.

I just love Earl Strickland. He is the character that pool needs. Can you imagine how boring it would be without him? He is definitely the John McEnroe of pool, no doubt! BTW has anyone noticed how they are racking the balls? The 2 ball is at the very rear of the rack every time...how come? I thought the rest of the rack apart fromthe 1 and the 9 had to be random. I just wonder if the soft break has anything to do with it? Great entertainment so far though!
