Seeded Estonia came up against Finland with the winner set to face Singapore in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning. Estonia's Denis Grabe and Rainer Laar struggled early on as Finland's duo of Mika Immonen assembled a 2-0 lead that could've been three if it wasn't for a poor safety from Immonen that allowed their opposition in to make it 2-1.

Estonia continued to struggle as Immonen and Uski gathered momentum to take the first rack after the break to lead 3-1 and soon 4-1. Grabe and Laar had their work cut out but came back in it sharpish no part down to an error on positioning on the nine in the sixth rack from Immonen to allow the Estonians to steal the rack and get the break in their hand.

At 4-2, Finland had their opportunity to move two away when back at the table only for Uski to miss the eight ball and leave Estonia again with a simple out to only trail by one. The key phrase of cue ball control was key in this contest, and it lacked at times from both sides. A routine break and run from Grabe and Laar levelled matters at 4-4.

Chinese Taipei's Ko brothers, Pin Yi and Ping Chung became the third side in the quarterfinals after they put in a ballsy display to defeat a determined Greek side led by Alexander Kazakis and Nikos Ekonomopoulos in a hill-hill finish.

The early running came from Chinese Taipei who took the opening three racks. Pin Yi and Ping Chung had lost the lag but were soon at the table with the rack concluding with a battle on the nine. Greece missed it but left it safe, Pin Yi then played an expert safety to take the cue ball down the table, Kazakis then missed the bank and Ping Chung finished it for Chinese Taipei to lead 1-0. Two quick racks later, Greece were down and cold at the break despite the sweltering conditions in England.

One of the best matches of the first round came last as Japan's Naoyuki Oi and Masato Yoshioka battled away with the unseeded but lethal duo from Switzerland of Dimitri Jungo and Ronald Regli. Japan had gotten off to the ideal start after winning the lag to take the opening two racks but that was only the start of an epic contest. Yoshioka dry broke in the third and from there, Switzerland pieced together a five pack, crafted like a fine Swiss watch.

Japan was staring down the barrel going into the eighth rack, but they were handed a lifeline when Regli scratched on the break. A neat bit of play later and Oi/Yoshioka's hopes were renewed with the deficit cut to two. The break in the ninth wasn't great from Oi and it led to Switzerland playing the pushout with Jungo at the table. The pushout was played well but Japan turned the needle with a safety of their own which put Regli in a tough postion. Kicking out on the one, Regli opened the table up to allow Japan in and cut the Swiss advantage to one.

Thailand's were a late call-up for the World Cup to replace the Philippines and they met two players representing South Africa for the first time in Jason Theron and Kyle Akaloo. The South Africans got off to a better start after Un-Nooh broke dry on the break, but it wasn't without sketchy moments for Akaloo who was also getting used to the conditions on table.

Un-Nooh and Saengkham had their chances at times, two ball-in-hand opportunities in the fourth rack could've given them their opening rack but they failed to make it pay and South Africa led 4-0. South African errors were due to catch up on them and they did as Thailand got two quick racks on the board. At 4-1, Akaloo tried to screw back to break the eight and nine but in the process missed the pink to allow Thailand back to the table who got their second rack to trail by two.

2022 Dynaspheres GB9 Paul Medati Trophy

Another GB9 event down and (most) post event activities done and had a great weekend as ever! Back to the daily grind today after just over a fortnight off! Congratulations to all the winners and finalists:

Mark Gray for taking down yet another Main Event title to add to his already massive collection and Darren Appleton for a very respectable runners up spot, taking out some massive names on the way!

Terry Challenger for winning his maiden Challenge Tier 1 title, with victory over Wong Yan in his first GB9 final in only his second event!

Allan Brown for joining an elite club of Scottish Challenge Tier 2 champions, with an incredibly tense final frame decider win over the ever improving László Zsom in the final.

My own performance was very up and down, but positives to be had in winning 3 x final frame deciders over the weekend and taking down the UK ranked number 4 in the process.

A massive thank you as ever to the team who work tirelessly to set these events up and make them run as seamlessly as possible, Michael Brisley, Barry Bompson, Shaun Berrisford, Viv Ruscoe, Andy Yates, Andrew Danks, Jo Micallef, Lewis Taylor and Ryan O'Neill & Julian Roper for commentating for most of the weekend!

Final thank you to the tour sponsors for their continued support of our tour. Everyone is hugely appreciative of your support which we really couldn’t do without.

Mark Gray:

"Managed to come out on top in a super tough field of 106 players here at the Mercure Hotel in Telford!!! With the exception of a very sloppy start in the final , played some very solid pool all wkend !! And to play my great pal and big rival Darren Appleton in the Final and to actually get a 11-9 win for a change v him is amazing !! ( Doesn’t happen very often lol )

He’s the greatest English player ever by a country mile and I respect him 100% on and off the table, absolute class act, but thanks for missing that 6 ball in last rack mate!"

MELLING & MAJID GB "B" WHITEWASH GB "A" SHAW & SANDERSON 7-0

Great Britain B's Imran Majid and Chris Melling whitewashed their counterparts Great Britain A 7-0 to reach the Last 16 of the 2022 World Cup of Pool at the Brentwood Centre, Essex live on Sky Sports Arena in the UK, DAZN in the USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Viaplay in Scandinavia, the Baltics, Netherlands, and Poland. Great Britain A (Jayson Shaw and Elliott Sanderson) won the lag, but Shaw's break proved to be an early downfall scratching to get Great Britain B to the table early on to run out to lead 1-0 before a break and run in the second rack. Imran Majid was returning to the GB fold for the first time since 2019 whilst Chris Melling was looking to put pay to his old teammate away. Majid and Melling's breaks were exemplary as they rallied up ahead of steam with relative ease whilst Shaw and Sanderson were rooted to their chairs as B went 3-0 up, 4-0 up, and 5-0 up. A dry break from Melling in five gave A their first chance since early on.

A brief safety exchange on the two ball could've helped GB A but Majid and Melling were not relenting as they kept their counterparts knotted up. Majid's safety play and Melling's magic came to play throughout and eventually, they freed the table up to lead 6-0. It was truly exhibition stuff with the pair loving every moment in front of a raucous crowd.

The closing rack was a clinic and summed up GB B's performance. A huge jump shot on the one ball from Majid set the tone before a tricky safety left Sanderson having to kick on the six ball only to leave it hanging over the pocket and leave Great Britain B their moment to seal a memorable win to meet either South Africa or Thailand next.

Melling: "I thought we played really well. The break was our friend. We controlled the cue ball well and got shots on the one and two. Nineball can be cruel sometimes.

European Open to be staged in Thorsten Hohmann's hometown of Fulda, Germany

Matchroom Pool is pleased to confirm the inaugural European Open Pool Championship will take place in Thorsten Hohmann's hometown of Fulda, Germany at the Hotel Esperanto Fulda from August 9-14 2022 with player entries open next Tuesday, 21 June at 3pm BST, and spectator tickets available to purchase from Monday 27th June.

The European Open Pool Championship is the latest event to be added to the Nineball World Ranking schedule with 256 of the world's best set to head to Germany, scheduled live on Sky Sports. The tournament will be played out in the same way as May's first-ever UK Open and the US Open Pool Championship. It will see players fight through a seeded double elimination stage led by the top 32 on the Nineball World Rankings. Only the last 16 will make it through to the straight knockout stage.

Hohmann: "It's always been a dream for me to have a tournament in my home, Fulda. It's in the heart of Germany. It's accessible and it's a beautiful town. It will be perfect for us. The venue. The players and fans will like it. I am just one of many talents to come out of Fulda. We have at least five European champions. We have a big history. Bringing the world to Fulda is great for Pool in Germany and Fulda."

"On one hand, I want it to be a success, so I don't want to play. I just want to be a part of organising it and getting promotion there and getting the residents of Fulda to support the event and for them to experience it on this level with a production level never seen before in Germany. On the other hand, I want to do well and play well."

Leon Scholz of Team Esperanto said “We as the Hotel Esperanto are pleased to host Matchroom Pool’s inaugural European Open Pool Championship and welcome the players and their fans in Fulda - the hometown of hall of famer Thorsten Hohmann. We are looking forward to an exciting tournament featuring 256 of the best pool players in the world as well as numerous fans who will follow the event live here at Hotel Esperanto or on TV.”

Poland met Hong Kong, China in one of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far. The Poles led by Mieszko Fortunski and Wojciech Szewczyk led early doors 1-0 but the pairing of Lo Ho Sum and Robbie Capito was always going to provide a stern test and that it did as they hit back with the next three racks to lead 3-1. Mistakes were few and far between but it was one in the fifth rack that got Poland back in. Capito lost position off the break leaving Lo with a bank on the two which he made but by then they were already scrambling. With the three ball missed by Capito, it was Szewczyk who sealed the fifth to be one back. A classy break and run in the sixth from Poland made it three-all.

You could feel the tension as both teams went hammer and tong for victory, Poland took the seventh but Szewczyk's break left Fortunski hooked on the one much to Hong Kong, China's fortune who levelled this time for 4-4.

Szewczyk and Fortunski come into the tournament much favoured, and they seized their moment in the next rack. Lo looked to be playing Capito in to move in front, but he over-egged his cue ball control on the six to scratch and allow Poland back in to lead once again. It was a costly error from Lo as Poland lapped up their opponent's misfortune to close out a 7-4 victory and set up a tie with the USA tomorrow evening.

"It would mean the world to do well. Playing in teams is amazing. When you can feel this emotion together. When you win individually you get so many fans that cheer you on but when you play with a partner, you get to feel that together. It was an unexpected opportunity they were playing well up until that point. He really thought he was going the safe way. I told Mieszko, let's take it, don't let these guys back in," said Szewczyk

Nineball World No. 1 Shane Van Boening and two-time Mosconi Cup MVP Skyler Woodward faced off at the top of the evening session against old foes Canada who had John Morra and Pagulayan flying the maple leaf.

Van Boening and Woodward won the lag and didn't look back from there as they gather momentum early doors to leave their counterparts trailing 3-0 going into the break. Canada never got going with both Morra and Pagulayan struggling to get to grips with the speed of the table and conditions. It was relatively plain sailing for the USA as they went 6-0 up and one away. In the seventh, Van Boening scratched off the break and Canada had their first rack on the board at 6-1. The USA completed their job in the following rack though to make the Last 16 without breaking a sweat.

Woodward: "I know I felt comfortable and Shane looked the same. We played well. Pretty consistent. We are happy. Overall I feel like we played good. I feel every match we can get better and break better. We got there a few days early and got some rest. Today I feel good having feeling tired. We will feel better every day."

World Champion Van Boening added: "The only mistake was the scratch. I am not feeling too good on my break but I will be practicing. We have been playing together for many years. He knows my game well and I know him well. I think we're a good match and we just go out there and play pool."

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS GERMANY INTO ROUND 2

Defending champions Germany sailed through their opening encounter with New Zealand 7-1 as the 2022 World Cup of Pool got underway at the Brentwood Centre, Essex live on Sky Sports Arena in the UK, DAZN in the USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Viaplay in Scandinavia, the Baltics, Netherlands, and Poland. Germany's near pairing of UK Open and World Pool Masters winner Joshua Filler and former World Champion Thorsten Hohmann come into the tournament as one of the favourites as they look to become the first nation to defend the title whilst New Zealand's Matt Edwards and Simon Singleton were flying their countries flag for the first time since 2019.

New Zealand won the lag but that was a rare highlight early on as Germany looked to build up some steam. Both teams struggled with the early pace of the table with Singleton missing the three to the middle pocket and opening the table for Filler and Hohmann to make the early move at 1-0. There were chances for New Zealand despite being 4-0 down but they seized their chance in the fifth rack after a brief exchange led to Filler missing a bank on the 9-ball and allowing their opponents the chance to be on the board at 4-1.

It was a tough day at the office for New Zealand through with errors being their downfall early on and Germany just too hot to handle late on as they wrapped up a 7-1 victory to set up a second round clash with either the Netherlands or Morocco later this week.
