ROUND TWO
THERE WERE FOUR more matches completed in Round Two of the Longoni 9
Ball League which took place at the BHR Treviso Hotel in Italy. The
competition features 12 two-man teams divided into four groups of three.
Each team plays the other team once in race-to-7 scotch doubles matches
and the leading four teams at the end of league play move forward to the
semi-finals.
The twist is that it is the top-two ranked players on the Euro Tour
ranking prior to the round of matches who will be representing their
country so it won’t necessarily be the same two players throughout the
tournament.
The opening match on table one saw the Netherlands narrowly defeat
Albania by the odd rack in an exciting encounter that highlighted the
cut-throat nature of the format. The Dutch were represented by Niels
Feijen and Marc Bijsterbosch, while Klenti Kaci and Besar Spahiu wore
Albanian colours.
The Dutch pair were always in the ascendancy as they won the scrappy
racks and before long found themselves in a 5-2 lead in the race-to-7
match, leaving the Albanians with a bit of a mountain to climb.
A good break from Kaci saw two balls drop and a fine pot on the 2 ball
from Spahiu gave them, a chance to claw one back. They took it with some
confident potting to make it 5-3. An illegal break, this time from
Bijsterbosch, gave Albania another chance. It was by no means an easy
table but they knuckled down to take it and reduce the arrears to a
single rack.
Looking to take the next Spahiu made a fatal error, leaving the 5-ball
hanging after a slow fine cut. Dutch tension eased as they took the
remaining balls to gain a two-rack lead to go on the hill at 6-4.
A third illegal break of the match returned the table to the Albanians
who now had to win the remaining three racks for victory. They took the
rack and then the next to take the match to the hill at 6-6.
It was Bijsterbosch to break and it was a good one but left an awkward
table. A loosener from Spahiu left the 4 ball for Feijen to pocket then
Bijsterbosch took the 5 using the bridge. That was effectively the end
as the Dutch cleared up for a hard-fought 7-6 win.

FEIJEN | IT'D BE AMAZING TO WIN IT AGAIN
Two-time World Pool Masters champion Niels Feijen has admitted it was a surprise when he received his wild card invite for the 2022 World Pool Masters at the Europa Point Sports Complex, Gibraltar May 5-8 live on Sky Sports in the UK.
BUY TICKETS FROM £7 HERE
WHERE TO WATCH
Feijen was speaking to Karl Boyes on the latest episode of Loose Pool with the Dutchman in a reflective mood ahead of next week admitting that it would be an amazing feeling to claim the title for the third time, but he's aware the challenge is much harder as an unseeded player: "When you look at it back then you had to win four matches but you have to beat four of the toughest guys on the planet. Now I have to win five! If I catch some groove and form, I am playing well enough to win. I don’t think anyone is a hot favourite. It’s a tough format. It would feel amazing to win it three times. It’d be a good line to see how many have won it more than twice. It’d be a nice group to join."

SHANE VAN BOENING IS CHAMPION OF THE WORLD
Shane Van Boening is the champion of the world after beating Albin Ouschan in the 2022 World Pool Championship final at the Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes. Coverage live on Sky Sports in the UK/Ireland, DAZN in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria as well as Viaplay and networks worldwide.
Van Boening won the lag before taking the opening rack in a comfortable fashion. The American was pegged back in the second though after missing a routine 2 ball to the bottom pocket. At that, Ouschan found his groove to put daylight between them both at 3-1 after four racks. At 3-1, Van Boening got some table time and made the most of it as he twisted the screw with a pinpoint jump shot on the 3 followed by a raking effort to pot the 4 and make it 3-2.
Ouschan did reassert a two-rack difference in the sixth rack, but it was short-lived after scratching on the break in the resulting rack. It was a case of blink, and you miss it as Van Boening turned the contest on its head to take the eighth rack to level at 4-4 before a simple 1-9 combo put him in front for the first time since 1-0.
A tie between two modern greats was always going to deliver with very little to separate the pair. As quick as Van Boening took the lead at 5-4, it was soon Ouschan back ahead at 6-5 with a break and run. The crowd was kept entertained throughout and the duo put on a clinic in safety play with a standout moment coming in the 12th as Ouschan found himself with no eye on the pocket on the 1, he played a sweet safety to tuck the cueball behind the 4 and 6 ball whilst leaving the 1 ball near the bottom pocket. Despite what looked like an effortless safety, Van Boening kicked out like the demon he is to make the 1 ball and soon level again at 6-6.
Van Boening's cue action has delighted many for so long and it was a case of it being as clean as ever and no better rack showed that than the way he kept the cue ball on a piece of string. From 6-6, it was the American who quite literally ran home with an expert performance and deliver his first-ever world title leaving Ouschan with very few opportunities at the table as he wrapped up an emotional 13-6 win. It was effortless and breathtaking at the same time in a watershed moment for the South Dakota Kid.
An emotional Van Boening said: "I have been trying for years. Two times I've been in the final and two times in the final. I just knew I was going to win the World Pool Championship. I dreamed I would be World Champion. It teaches you to work hard, follow your dreams and never give up."

Ouschan and Van Boening to contest 2022 World Pool Championship final
Albin Ouschan and Shane Van Boening will contest the 2022 World Pool Championship final this evening at the Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes live on Sky Sports Arena in the UK, DAZN in the USA, Canada, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria as well as other networks worldwide from 5:30 pm UK time.
Ouschan headed into the day looking to become only the second player in history to defend his title and win it three times emulating Earl Strickland. The Austrian set up a semi-final clash with Kuwait's Abdullah Alyousef after victory over Mosconi Cup teammate Joshua Filler yesterday evening. Alyousef meanwhile came through a dramatic quarter-final showing with Max Lechner of Austria.
It was Ouschan that got off to the quicker starts after winning the lag, the Mean Machine took the opening eight racks without reply to leave Alyousef, playing in his first World Pool Championship semi-final, glued to his chair. Into the ninth rack and Ouschan found himself struggling for position off the break allowing Alyousef back to the table to put a mini run of three racks together.
In truth, Ouschan was always in control of proceedings despite the mini comeback from Alyousef. In the 12th rack, Alyousef missed what looked to be a simple 2 ball and that was his last chance at the table as Ouschan ran out a comfortable winner to meet Van Boening in the final.
