Defending champion Joshua Filler bowed out of the US Open Pool Championship at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City as 9-ball's toughest tournament moved down to the last 16.
Scores
Alexander Kazakis, Billy Thorpe, and Judd Trump were amongst the names to depart in the morning session before the afternoon and evening action got underway with Francisco Sanchez Ruiz coming from 5-0 down to defeat Shane Van Boening 11-6 to join the last 16.
The Spaniard pounced on an uncharacteristic scratch from Van Boening in the 10th rack and then did the same in the 15th after it looked like the five-time champion would clear the table to cut the deficit to 8-7. Instead, Sanchez Ruiz went 9-6 up and completed a memorable comeback.
Reigning champion Filler followed up from that match knocking out America's Skyler Woodward in an 11-4 victory that saw the German continue his route towards the last 16. Mieszko Fortuński was next in Filler's way. Fortuński has battled away throughout the week and put in arguably one of his biggest wins of his career so far to defeat Filler 11-3 in front of a packed crowd around table two. That result saw Filler's tournament end whilst Fortuński continued his march.
David Alcaide joined his compatriot Sanchez Ruiz in the last 16, the 2019 World Pool Masters champion was trailing for large parts of his match against the Netherlands' Marc Bijsterbosch but came through 11-8 to put himself in the draw.

Earl Strickland, Alex Pagulayan, Mika Immonen, Thorsten Hohmann, and Kelly Fisher were amongst the names to have their US Open Pool Championship campaigns cut short as the field went to the last 64 on day three at Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City.
See The Scores
Fans inside the Diamond Arena were treated to a fantastic spectacle in the opening session of the day as reigning champion Joshua Filler beat Sanjin Pehlivanović 11-8 when at eight all it looked like the Bosnian would take the lead if it wasn’t for a miss on the six. Filler does find himself on the losers’ side though going into the fourth day after a loss to World-10 ball runner-up Aloysius Yapp 11-3. It will not be unfamiliar territory for Filler though, after tasting defeat on his way to winning in 2019.
Jayson Shaw beat Hsieh Chia Chen in a hill-hill thriller to set up a battle of the Brits against Judd Trump in the evening after Trump had beaten Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Al-Shammari 11-5 earlier in the day.
When it came down to it, Shaw prevailed emphatically cleaning up for an 11-1 win to send Trump into the losers’ round 6 whilst Eagle Eye became the first name into the winners’ qualification section.
One of the standout matches of the day came late on as Jeffrey De Luna downed Pagulayan 11-0 as he potted 99 balls along the way with Pagulayan failing to pot a single ball in the whole contest and the Bull potting 99% of his shots only missing once. That result kept De Luna’s hopes of going better than his third-place finish in 2019.
American No.1 Shane van Boening remains unbeaten in his search for a sixth US Open crown after beating BJ Ussery to set up a winners’ qualification clash with Francisco Sanchez Ruiz live tomorrow evening on Table 1. It was the end of the road for Strickland though as he looked for his sixth title losing out to Alan Rolon Rosado.

MATCHROOM POOL LAUNCHES UK OPEN WITH BIGGEST PRIZE FUND AND FIELD IN BRITISH POOL
Matchroom Pool is delighted to announce the launch of The UK Open, a new open tournament and the latest addition to the Matchroom Pool Series set to take place for the first time in May 2022 London, with a total prize fund of $200,000.
The UK Open will feature alongside the most illustrious tournaments in 9-ball pool including The World Pool Championship, US Open Pool Championship, Mosconi Cup, World Pool Masters, World Cup of Pool, and Championship League Pool which all form a key part of the Matchroom Pool World Rankings and the race to be a part of the Mosconi Cup teams for European and American players. The tournament marks a key milestone in Matchroom Multi Sport's commitment to Pool and will see 256 players compete from May 17 to May 22 at the Copper Box Arena, London with a buy-in of only $250, live on Sky Sports in the UK, and DAZN in the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy.
Matchroom Multi Sport Managing Director Emily Frazer underlined her vision for the tournament: "We've been talking a lot about expanding the Matchroom Pool Series and it's now we stop talking and actually turn it into actions. We've acquired the US Open and the World Championship and now we're going to launch a new event. It's the biggest prize fund in British pool and the biggest field size, it's just so exciting.

Day two of the US Open Pool Championship at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and the Atlantic City Sports Commission saw the top seeds rumble on through into the next stage of the winners' rounds whilst many hopes and dreams were dashed as the first round of the losers’ bracket were concluded.
Track Scores Here
Naoyuki Oi began the day as the focus on table one against Kuwait's Mohammad Almuhanna and he made the most of it sealing a 9-3 win and a space in winners' round two where he will take on Roland Garcia as matches turn to a Race to 11.
Jayson Shaw followed up with a display worthy of being the 2020 Mosconi Cup MVP as he bypassed Daniel Dagotdot of the Philippines in a donut to set up a tricky clash against Hsieh Chia Chen on the same side of the draw as Oi.
Judd Trump's first foray into 9-ball pool cruised on after some early nerves against India's Dhruvalkumar Patel. The Ace in the Pack was 3-2 up but pulled away at that point onwards to seal a 9-2 win. His experience on the green baize of snooker proving to come in at the ideal time with a cruel snooker on the two in the 10th rack.
Kelly Fisher set up a tantalizing match against Niels Feijen after overcoming Kristina Tkach with KwikFire beating the Russian for the second time in a matter of days after beating her in the WPBA Sondheim Kiwanis Invitational final on Sunday. Tkach kept her chances going in a nail-biting 9-8 win over Vincent Cimarelli.
A packed arena also witnessed Earl Strickland put on a show as he beat Christopher Pyle in a whitewash. The highlight from the Pearl coming in the fourth rack with a golden break. Fellow Americans Skyler Woodward and Shane Van Boening had varying degrees of ease to beat their respective opponents, but both moved into winners round three. Woodward will face Mario He next and SVB will face World Under-17 champion Moritz Neuhausen of Germany tomorrow.

2021 US OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP | TOP SEEDS COME THROUGH EARLY TESTS
The 2021 US Open Pool Championship got underway in style at Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City with reigning champion Joshua Filler out to join a select few who have defended their crown in what is known as the toughest tournament in 9-ball pool.
Track Scores Here
In Matchroom Pool’s first visit stateside since the 2019 Mosconi Cup, Filler got his campaign off to the best possible start getting the better of American Joseph Blyler 9-2 in quick time with Blyler struggling after taking the opening rack.
Filler has been on a good streak in Matchroom Pool Series events and recently claimed the World Cup of Pool title alongside partner Christoph Reintjes. He underlined his intentions perhaps best in the fifth rack with a two-rail kick on the five to help clean up to lead 4-1. At times, all Blyler could do was applaud the Matchroom Pool World No.2’s shotmaking.
If Filler’s showing wasn’t enough, the new World Champion Albin Ouschan set out early warning signals with a 9-0 dismantling of Scott Haas whilst his 2020 Mosconi Cup teammate Jayson Shaw made light work of Esteban Robles live on Matchroom Pool’s YouTube 9-3.
2019 Mosconi Cup MVP Skyler Woodward was also live on our YouTube where fans witnessed him beat Rick Miller 9-2. It was a similar story for World Pool Championship runner-up Omar Al-Shaheen who beat James Prather 9-2 and World 10-ball runner-up Naoyuki Oi who moved to the winners’ bracket seeing off David Daya 9-4.
Judd Trump made his long-awaited 9-ball pool debut at the start of the evening session and the World Snooker 22-time ranking title winner didn’t hang around against Joe Magee in a whitewash win. The Ace in the Pack allayed any early nerves with a solid opening break before going on to break and run in several racks. With Magee watching on from his chair, Trump made his ascent to the hill with a fantastic cut on the eight, which saw him take the cue ball around the table to be in position and make a dream start.
The recently announced Team USA Mosconi Cup Vice-Captain and five-time US Open champion Shane Van Boening laid down his gauntlet with a 9-2 win over Francesco Candela in front of a packed crowd on the main table at Harrah’s Resort, Atlantic City. Van Boening won four of his five titles in the last decade and will face Sharik Sayed of Singapore next as the quest for number six rolls on.
Five-time winner Earl Strickland started against Adam Martin in a convincing 9-1 victory whilst Billy Thorpe needed the last rack to beat Raymond Linares and Tyler Styer suffered at the hands of Hussain Al Sayyafi but recovered to beat James Conn in the first losers round.
Recently crowned World 10-ball winner Eklent Kaçi faced Jesus Atencio in a tricky encounter which he overcame 9-7 to go into the winners’ bracket.

Kaci Lights Up World 10-Ball Championship
Reporter: Keith Paradise - CSI Staff Writer

The only thing that could stop Albania’s Eklent Kaci on the final day of the World 10-Ball Championships was to turn off the lights.
Playing in the second semifinal match of the day, Kaci had built an early 3-1 advantage against Singapore’s Aloysius Yapp when a thunderstorm knocked out power to the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino for a little over two hours. When play resumed, the 22-year-old Albanian gutted out a 10-8 victory against Yapp to earn a trip to the finals, then pulled away from Japan’s Naoyuki Oi late in the championship match to earn a 10-6 victory and win the second-annual Predator 10-Ball Championship. Kaci, who has won a handful of EuroTour events and was a runner-up at the 2017 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship, used a combination of tight safety play and dazzling shot-making to earn the biggest prize of his career.
Playing in the weather-delayed championship match, Kaci used two breaks and runs along with a dry break from Oi to build an early 4-1 advantage. Oi returned fire, just as he had done so many times throughout the tournament, taking advantage of a Kaci missed shot and dry break to tie the score 4-4, only to suffer a dry break of his own in the very next game. Kaci cleared the table to regain the lead and tacked on another rack to build a 6-4 advantage.

Wu Sails Through to Claim Diamond Las Vegas Open
Reporter: Keith Paradise - CSI Staff Writer

For the last half decade, Wu Kun-Lin has been hanging around the top of the leaderboard at professional pool events.
He placed third at the 2017 World 9-Ball Championship and followed that performance by finishing fifth at the same event a year later. He has a handful of top-five finishes in the Japan Open and, five years ago, Wu finished in third at the China Open. Despite the top finishes, the 25-year-old from Taiwan hasn’t been able to break through and secure a victory.
That is, at least, until this weekend.
Using a smooth break and some pinpoint safety play, Wu cruised to the championship in the third annual Diamond Las Vegas Open, defeating Omar Al Shaheen in straight sets, 4-3 and 4-1, in Saturday night’s finals at the Rio All-Suites hotel and casino. Wu, who posted an undefeated record during the four-day, 128-player event, managed to survive early charges not only from Al Shaheen in the finals, but also Estonia’s Denis Grabe in the semifinals to earn the trophy and the $15,000 check.
Wu jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in race-to-four, two set finals thanks to two victorious safety exchanges and a break-and-run. Al Shaheen, who earned runner-up honors at this year’s World Pool Championship, climbed onto the scoreboard in the fourth game when he executed a table-length kick in of the 6 ball and ran out the rack. The young upstart from Kuwait then used a powerful break shot to break-and-run back-to-back racks and tie the score. Faced with a tricky 4 and 10 ball combination shot in the decisive game, Al Shaheen attempted to pocket the object ball but instead left a makeable 4 ball along the long rail, which his opponent pocketed and cleared the table to secure the set, 4-3.
Al Shaheen was plagued with mistakes throughout the second set, committing fouls in the first and second games as Wu again secured an early 2-0 lead. Al Shaheen was able to narrow the deficit in the next game when Wu overran position on the 6 ball and committed a foul of his own, but forfeited the table in the next rack when Al Shaheen committed another unforced error. After winning a safety exchange on the 2 ball in the fifth rack, it appeared the Kuwaiti was about to cut his deficit to 3-2 but left a routine 8 ball in the corner pocket’s jaws. Wu cleared the table, then tacked on another rack to seal the match and the championship.

Diamond Las Vegas Open Down to Final 32 Players
Reporter: Keith Paradise - CSI Staff Writer
Photography: Predator Group
Things weren’t looking so good early on in Shane Van Boening’s Friday night match against Chris Reinhold.
The five-time United States Open 9-Ball champion had just completed an error-infested first set, as Reinhold turned a missed 9 ball and a scratch by his opponent into a 4-0 whitewashing. Needing to win the second frame in order to force a match-deciding shootout, the South Dakotan caught a break in the first rack when his opponent misplayed a safety on the 2 ball. Van Boening made the most of his opportunity, winning four of the next five racks then surviving the sudden death frame to remain undefeated in this weekend’s Diamond Las Vegas Open at the Rio All-Suites Hotel.
After clearing the table in the second set’s opening rack, Van Boening used a victorious safety exchange in the next rack and a misplayed 6 ball by Reinhold in the third game to increase his lead to 3-0. Reinhold, who competed with Van Boening on the United States Mosconi Cup team last year, stole a game back on a safety battle of his own and appeared positioned to cut into the deficit more in the fifth game, but scratched when he drew the cue ball into the corner pocket while trying to secure position on the 3 ball.
Van Boening was perfect in the shootout, pocketing four consecutive balls while Reinhold landed three out of four of the sudden death spot shots.
The South Dakotan is one of 16 competitors who remain undefeated in the four-day, 128-player event – which was reduced to 32 players by the end of competition last night. The format now switches from double-elimination to a single-elimination knockout phase, with brackets redrawn as the 16 contestants from the winner’s side are matched with the 16 remaining players on the one-loss side. The competition resumes today at noon local time with the champion crowned later this evening.
