Luke Garland eases to 7-1 victory at Solihull 9 Ball tournament!

Report by: Matt Hawthorn

Saturday 28th August saw Rileys Solihull play host to the second installment of the GO Customs 9 Ball Series. The race-to-seven, double elimination format saw 32 cueists looking to claim the £400 first prize. The draw was completed earlier in the week, meaning that by 10:45 we were underway.

Luke Garland, Cregg Bear, Chris Parker, Ryan Coton, Kev Simpson, Adam Lewis, Adam Clarke and Gary Bullocke all progressed to the last sixteen undefeated. This left eight spaces up for grabs as those left in the losers qualifying round looked to keep their hopes of tournament success alive. Benji Buckley overcame a 2-0 deficit to eliminate newcomer Dwayne Yates (7-4), while Andy Lacey got the better of Dane Jones (7-5). Shaun Johnson couldn't stop Stewart Colclough, going down 7-3, but Spencer Oliver took down Luke Hart (7-5). The battle of the Hungarians saw Laszlo Zsom defeat Zoltan Kojsza (7-4) and there were contrasting fortunes for the Weavers, as Kurt beat Andy Carter (7-2) but Steve fell at the expense of David Hine (7-1). Daryl Garland completed the final sixteen lineup via a bye.

Now it was a straight knockout and, with the favourites not quite hitting top gear to this point, this really was anyone's event to win. Luke Garland eventually put distance between himself and Stewart Colclough as he advanced (7-4). Kev Simpson managed to halt Laszlo Zsom's fantastic comeback to sneak through (7-5) while Chris Parker won the final two racks to pip Daryl Garland (7-6). Kurt Weaver advanced past Ryan Coton (7-2) while Andy Lacey ended Adam Clarke's event, conceding just one rack in the process. Cregg Bear overcame David Hine to progress (7-3) and Spencer Oliver scored an impressive win over Gary Bullocke (7-4). Adam Lewis would complete the last eight by eliminating Benji Buckley (7-4).

JUDD TRUMP TO COMPETE AT US OPEN POOL CHAMPIONSHIP

22-time World Snooker ranking event winner Judd Trump will compete at the upcoming US Open Pool Championship at Harrah's Resort, Atlantic City September 13-18, in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and the Atlantic City Sports Commission.

GET YOUR TICKETS HERE

Trump will look to be a trendsetter and become the first snooker star of the modern era to turn to 9-ball and goes in on the back of winning five titles on the 2020/21 World Snooker Tour including the World Grand Prix. He will not be the first Snooker player to cross disciplines with Ronnie O'Sullivan having represented Europe at the Mosconi Cup in the early 90s and the likes of Jimmy White, Alex Higgins, and Steve Davis all taking on the challenge.

The Ace in the Pack is heading in at the peak of his powers: "I think the US Open Pool Championship has got the most heritage and prestige to it, it's been around a long time. Everyone in the world of pool knows it's the tournament if you are going to win one, it's this one. For me, that's what kind of attracted me, to go in at the deep end, going in at the biggest event and see what I can do."

"I think when I get over there and step out, I don't want to make a fool of myself, that will add pressure. But in the snooker world, I know what I am capable of and I know when I put the work in I've got that belief whereas, in pool, I do not know what's going to happen. Hopefully, I can have a good run in it."

Dynamic Billard Lasko Open 2021

Abled meets disabled, young meets old, the Eurotour has always thrown up some interesting scenarios since its inception in 1992 and the Dynamic Billard Lasko open was no different. Slovenia’s David Slacek has played the last two wheelchair European championships and introduced the EPBF to this lovely location. It was therefore heart-warming that he displayed such courage to take on the abled bodied and he did not let the Locals down beating Bulgaria’s top women player Kristina Zlateva 9-4 in today’s early round. Unfortunately, Davids run came to an end when he lost his next two matches to Greece’s Nik Ekonopolous 9-1 and Russia’s Aleksander Chernyshov 9-5.

Then came the young, Maks Benko, the 11 year old Slovenian was full of emotion as he took down veteran Dutchman Peter Knuever in a thrilling 9-8 match watched by his coach Mitja Gradisnik. Mitja was instrumental in bringing the European Youth championships to Slovenia last week to give his young players experience and boy did that work as Maks enjoyed his first ever Eurotour match, and a victory to go with it. After losing his second match against Austria’s Patrick Kiesel 9-3, Maks faced Sweden’s Kai Kraft but the day seemed to get the better of him losing 9-6. 12 hours of pool is a tough day for the pro’s, let alone a 11 year old but we’ll be seeing more from this young talent in the future.

Predator 2021 WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championship moves to Austria

Reporter: Angela Galane | Events & Sponsorships Coordinator - Predator Group

The Predator 2021 WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championship is being relocated from Las Vegas to the Sportpark in Klagenfurt, Austria. Their event will be held in conjunction with the Predator Austria Open which will take place October 6-10, 2021, with juniors able to play alongside top professional players.

With travel restrictions to the United-States being a constraint for a number of foreign junior participants, it made it difficult for families to organize travel in early September and therefore impacted the decision to move the event.

“The current reality is that the United States has Covid-related travel restrictions that make it impossible for this event to take place on US soil,” said BCA Communications Manager Shane Tyree. “We wish all competitors good luck in Austria as they compete in the 2021 Predator WPA World Junior 9-Ball Championship.”

The Arcadia Arizona Open kicks off the new US Pro Billiard Series

Reporter: Philippe Singer | Vice President - Predator Group

From his early days of competing in pocketing billiards events, Russia’s Fedor Gorst has always shown a proficiency for jumping the cue ball over pesky, obstructing balls.

When the young man was a mere teenager, he used a pinpoint jump shot over Konstantin Stepanov in the finals of a Russian event to earn his first victory. Ever since, it’s been common knowledge among European competitors that sending the cue ball airborne for Gorst is as mundane as a stop shot for them.

The 21-year-old from Moscow was at it again Saturday night in the finals of the inaugural U.S. Pro Billiard Series Arizona Open, using two successful jump shots in his final game to secure the second set of his match against Carlo Biado, then executing four consecutive spot shots in sudden death to secure the title. Gorst, who earned a World 9-Ball championship in 2019 and competed on last year’s winning European Mosconi Cup squad, posted an undefeated record throughout the four-day, 46-player event held last week at Casino Del Sol Resort in Tuscon. “I was just trying to focus,” said Gorst after the second set was completed and he approached the sudden death frame. “I was super pumped up in that last rack and I was trying to calm down.”

Biado, who has a World 9-Ball title of his own, jumped out to an early advantage during the first set, using a missed 1 ball by his opponent coupled with a break-and-run to take a 2-0 lead in a race-to-four. Gorst rallied in the middle stages, clearing the table during the third game after the Filipino failed to pocket a ball on the break and taking advantage of missed shots by Biado in the next two games to gain the lead, 3-2. At the table with the chance to win the set in the sixth game, the Russian couldn’t pocket a ball on his break. Biado cleared the table then took advantage of a Gorst foul in the next rack to snatch the set, 4-3.

Spencer Wins London's Finest 10-Ball

Reporter: Andrew Phan
Photographer: Andrew Phan

Solid performances all round for everyone tonight in our 10-ball tournament. Ciprian makes an undefeated run into another final but it’s about time we welcomed Spencer to the winner’s circle with a 4-0 win in the final!

We play a weekly tournament at London Snooker in Tooting on Monday evenings. Different discipline every week, this week it was 10-ball double elimination, race to 3 all the way then race to 4 in the finals.

It’s only £5 entry, then the prize pot is split between 1st and 2nd. Ciprian makes it 2 finals in 2 weeks but it Spencer who takes his first win in a London’s Finest event.

Shock winner as Solihull 9-Ball returns

Shock winner as Solihull 9-Ball returns!

Report by: Matt Hawthorn

Seventeen long months after Stewart Colclough claimed the only event of the 2020 GO Customs Pool Series, Solihull 9 Ball returned with the first of three tournaments, scheduled for 2021. Rileys Solihull would again be the venue as a capped field of forty cueists dusted off the cobwebs, all with the incentive of the tidy £400 first prize. Event one of the GO Customs 9 Ball Series would see players compete in our familiar double elimination format, with the final sixteen players competing in a straight knockout to determine the winner.

The action commenced at 11:00am. Despite suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Kurt Weaver (7-1) in his opening game, Dylan Mitchell progressed steadily through the loss-side as he knocked off debutant Dwayne Yates (7-4) and 2020 Q-School winner Adam Lewis (7-5) to earn himself a last sixteen place. There he was joined by Danny Orme, who sent Chris McDermott (7-5) and Spencer Oliver (7-1) to the left side of the bracket. UK number one, Benji Buckley overcame a 5-2 deficit to see off Kev Simpson en route to the single elimination stage while Solihull locals Luke Garland, Apostolis Harmas, Shane Conroy, Luke Hart and Andy Lacey all advanced with 2-and-0 records. Ashik Nathwani qualified as the final "seed" following victories over Daryl Garland (7-5) and Alan Morgan (7-1).

Many would have been surprised to have seen Kev Simpson, Kurt Weaver, Elliott Sanderson and Stewart Colclough all in the losers qualification round. Simpson proved too much for Weaver (7-3) while Sanderson ended David Casey's involvement (7-2). Stewart Colclough has a history of winning our events via the loser's side of the draw. However, on this occasion, Mehedi Hasssan would take an impressive scalp (7-5) to eliminate one of the pre-tournament favourites.
